  1. Hobbling the resource economy (I assume the Liberals will go for western mining permits next) will hurt them as much it hurts us. Central and Eastern Canadian politicians sure will miss those equalization payments.

  2. All Albertans need to know about JT & the Sunny Ways Band:
Speaking at a town hall in Peterborough, Ont., Trudeau was asked about his government’s approval of pipelines and his commitment to the environment:
“You can’t make a choice between what’s good for the environment and what’s good for the economy,” Trudeau said. “We can’t shut down the oilsands tomorrow. We need to phase them out. We need to manage the transition off of our dependence on fossil fuels. That is going to take time. And in the meantime, we have to manage that transition.”

It’s really about managing the transition into Third World Nation perpetual communist loser status. Alberta’s prosperity and widespread conservative individualism are Canada’s enemies.

  3. I guess Trudeau doesn’t understand that we are largely a resource based economy and that if you kill all resource production, there will be no economy, and nothing for transfer payments, or government union salaries and pensions, or false charity and virtue signalling across the planet. In short, if resources fail, we are ripe for takeover and the military, which his regime clearly despises, will not save him.

  4. I have a fear that equalization payments will simply be tweaked to keep the funds flowing from those who work to those who don’t. All that will be required is that we (the West) be doing better (or at least less worse!)than Quebec & company for them to justify (in their own minds)that we continue to pay into it.
BTW, the argument that “the successful should pay more” is already in place in our personal and corporate income tax. Transfer payments are simply yet another layer of welfare payments. They are not needed, as wealth redistribution was already in place without them.
And Brian hit the nail on the head when he said that Trudeau (and indeed all lefties) govern according to feelings, not facts. I would add some related terms to that…. feelings, jargon, and appearances. But only appearances to the “right” people.
    Go, Mad Max!

  5. Last I checked, most of western Canada is rabidly liberal.
The divide is not east/west, its urban/rural.
This whole east/west thing is a red herring divide and conquer strategy, and there are too many fools who fall for it.

  6. Trudeau decides the equalization formula. The west will always be the haves, and the east will always be the nots. Stop laboring under your false assumption that any government anywhere at anytime tried to help you.

  7. If you look at a map of constituencies Conservative blue covers most of the country even though they lost. The people who make a living mining, farming, logging, fishing, trapping, and in oil and gas who live in the country mostly vote Conservative. The people who shit on them live in the cities. They vote Liberal.

  8. I’m not sure how the Federal government could make policies more biased against western Canadian economies. They already exclude Quebec hydro from the fiscal capacity formula while including 50% of non-renewable resources. The new energy boards will penalize western Canadian energy business with upstream and downstream GHG considerations while ignoring GHG intensive auto and manufacturing industries in Ontario and Quebec’s aeronautics industry. In fact, they’ll subsidize the auto and aeronautics industry (bailout Ontario’s financial/banking industries?) yet ignore or even cheer on unemployment in western resource industries. Corporate welfare and the equalization formula already disproportionately benefits central and eastern Canadian industries.
Tweaking the equalization formula to benefit central and eastern Canada even more would signal a return to western alienation and revive federal political parties representing western Canadian interests.
In a fairer world any equalization plan transfer would go from all taxpayers > federal government > poorer Canadians instead of from all taxpayers > federal government > provincial politicians. In a perfect world they’d get rid of equalization payments and corporate welfare completely so Canadian citizens would move to where there’s better job prospects and businesses weren’t linked to regional politics. Then boost per capita transfers (or tax points) to provinces and direct payments to individuals, if necessary.

  9. FFS, I’m a libertarian atheist. There’s no possible way I could be any more cynical about government, religion or other authoritarian institutions. But we’ve seen this show, NEP and unfair asymmetrical federation, before so there’s no mystery in how it ends.

  10. Albertans are the biggest pushovers out there. All this bluster and bullsheet is just a front. If there were any balls left on western Canadians they’d be burning down railroad bridges at the BC AB border, shutting in gas and oil transmission lines from BC, blockading of AB BC border highways etc. Let the cargo rot at the port of Vancouver and at the Manitoba Ontario borders.
Until then you’re just a bunch of pansified pu$$ies. Newfies burned fishing gear and occupied federal buildings last week over few million in fish quota cuts. As a wise woman once quipped “not showing up to riot is a failed conservative policy.”
I don’t give a crap anymore I’m doing well myself so shag it, enjoy the decline!

  11. Bingo! And, the city dwellers all want a free lunch.
Grok, you might well have something there.

  12. Douglas Reed >
“Trudeau doesn’t understand that we are largely a resource based economy”
Heh, that’s why he’s sold off the remainder Canada’s gold reserves, because we are a resource based economy. LOL
“Ottawa sells off almost all its gold reserves, leaving just 77 ounces — or less”
    http://www.cbc.ca/news/business/gold-canada-reserves-1.3475818
In all fairness, I don’t think it’s as much about Trudeau not understanding Canada’s wealth in resources, but who gets to control them. Obviously a Socialist will try to consolidate and horde Canada’s wealth and control it in Central Canada.
Then in true totalitarian fashion distribute controlled measures of bread to the unwashed masses.
“2 for me one for them, three for me one for them……….”

  13. I remember PET saying “You people in the West have no idea what is happening in this country”. Oh yes we do, we know damn well when we are being screwed.Farm

  14. His father did this and now PM Hair-Boy is doing this.
It is easy to blame the idiot boy-king and Butts and Credit Suisse or whoever the hell is actually running this country.
At the end of the day, however, it is Liberal voters who are to blame for letting this go as far as it has.
(By the way, the captcha for me was VICENZA MAGNUM which is a great name for a perfume but I deeply digress …)

  15. Glenardo@2:47pm;
Could not have put it any better. Reform is long gone and I am not prepared to rebuild it. Manning and Harper abandoned what Reform stood for and the West as usual will pay the price. A lot of bluster but so many are on the government tit now that nothing will change until the ultimate collapse in debt.

  16. Exactly!
Every time I look at a picture of him I feel like puking and have to go and rinse and repeat.

  17. I guess Trudeau doesn’t understand that we are largely a resource based economy

  18. Be careful. Once Islamaphobia will be made into a captial crime, Trudeauaphobia will be next.
You’ll be immediately convicted of being disrespectful to His Majesty and sentenced to Lotusland until such time that you have finally come to worship him for his wisdom.
It won’t be long before I’d be joining you there.

  19. If the NEB is so easily influenced by Albertan values then there is no reason to believe that it would be just as easily influenced by Ottawa values. And maybe that’s the point? Liberals want the board to be closer to a culture of hate for oil.

  20. these mental midgets might want to have a look at what is happening in Australia. They have reduced their ability to meet base load requirements as a result Rio Tinto has been forced to reduce their aluminum production by 80,000 tons, a mainstay for export from that country. For all those who want to starve and freeze Canadians I suggest that you come and try it face to face, you won’t be around long.

  21. I would suggest ranked voting where no candidate is elected until receiving majority support, 50 plus one or more.

  22. Please, Trudeau doesn’t understand anything, he is a puppet for the elite. Please don’t make Trudeau out to be somebody with an ounce of intelligence. People based their votes on looks and people’s personality, not on their qualifications, Trudeau couldn’t get a job in the private section much above a customer service position.

  23. Everybody’s doing it.
It’s the “right” thing to do.
    We have to do “it.”
We’ll bribe the provinces with your money.
Remember some people are developing alternative fuel sources, just not us.
We will reduce warming by 1/millionth of a degree (Celsius or Fahrenheit? Who cares)
The poor will buck up with this latest tax which they can’t even escape by unemployment or other depravity.
The poor drive too much in the quest for beer & popcorn anyway, so we’re doing them a favour.
We think so which means we are right, which of course means “you” are wrong.
We’re sure we’re right; no need to verify we can feed the ….
    … new revenues pouring in.
Now business will now have more consistency in their tax increases, knowing how much they are, until they go up again.
Actually, the business planning is quite easy – pass on the tax 100%, maybe go broke.
It’s for our own good to make citizens, I mean “polluters” pay.
