A Liberal Iowa Journalist Explains Why Trump Won

Iowa journalist Robert Leonard has written a most fascinating op-ed in the New York Times. While devout Leftists, who have clearly drank too much of the mind numbing Kool-Aid, are incapable of learning from the immense wisdom of his piece, hopefully a few on that side of the aisle will be prompted to change their thinking … even a little.

“Democrats believe that we are born good, that we create God, not that he created us. If we are our own God, as the Democrats say, then we need to look at something else to blame when things go wrong — not us.”
Mr. Watts talked about the 2015 movie theater shooting in Lafayette, La., in which two people were killed. Mr. Watts said that Republicans knew that the gunman was a bad man, doing a bad thing. Democrats, he added, “would look for other causes — that the man was basically good, but that it was the guns, society or some other place where the blame lies and then they will want to control the guns, or something else — not the man.” Republicans, he said, don’t need to look anywhere else for the blame.
Hearing Mr. Watts was an epiphany for me. For the first time I had a glimpse of where many of my conservative friends and neighbors were coming from. I thought, no wonder Republicans and Democrats can’t agree on things like gun control, regulations or the value of social programs. We live in different philosophical worlds, with different foundational principles.

This snippet explains a lot about why Leftist politicians enact policies which are quickly taken advantage of and generally end up doing little to no good.
Here’s a follow-up to Leonard’s piece.

  1. Yes. and this is why I’m sick of conservatives slamming leftists for “unfriending” them “just because they disagree on politics/who they voted for.”
that’s the ONE thing the leftists get right: Unless you consider politics a team sport, then your “just politics” represents your core values. You SHOULDN’T hang around people whose values so diverge from yours that you are yelling about them over Thanksgiving and on social media. WHY?
Unlike Dennis Prager/Krauthammer et al, I DO think liberals are evil, not just wrong. There’s a war on. Lives are at stake.
My views are self-evidently correct. I don’t want/need to “have a debate/dialogue” about them. There is nothing to discuss.

  2. Interesting that he quotes J.C. Watts, former Republican congressman from Oklahoma, and former quarterback for the Ottawa Rough Riders for four years in the 1980s.

  3. People are born innocent without experience or knowledge, without blame. This confuses people that innocent is the same as good and then it must other factors must be blamed for bad behaviour.

  4. The thing is a lot of conservatives STILL don’t understand that your attitude mirrors that of the leftists. They hate us. They really do. If they could they would ban all conservative thought and send us to goulags and I mean it literally. These people are the enemy and the fact some conservatives still don’t grasp the concept is insane. The fastest way to become a racist, sexist, bigot homophobe is to tell a leftist you’re a conservative. You could be a black lesbian stage actress whose grandparents were slaves and if you say you’re a conservative then welp you’re a racist, sexist, bigot, homophobe. If you say you voted for Trump then you’re deplorable too.
If you ever want to see it in action go to a conservative campaign event and wander around the inevitable protest outside. Take a good look around because the people outside are dippers and liberals who volunteer for their campaigns. I know it for a fact. They are also insane and will yell in your face, call you names and generally want you to die for simply disagreeing with them. The press will be there and report glowingly about the protesters and how evil who ever the next leader is. It’s the best way to get a sense of what we are dealing with here.
These people are not our friends. They cannot be reasoned with. They want to destroy us. It’s time to accept it and treat them accordingly. In other words WAKE UP.

  5. One doesn’t have to believe in original sin or virgin births or any form of deity to come to the conclusion that statism is evil. In trying to determine why rural people voted for Trump, he is avoiding introspection of progressives who wallow in the politics of envy, resentment, and hatred. His focus on rural Christianity could be re-directed at the pantheism of green narratives of his fellow Democrats. Trump doesn’t even stand out as in keeping with social conservative values that the author is trying shoehorn him into. Cruz would have been a better fit on that front. Trump was simply the better choice than a deeply flawed, evil, condescending and vile Democratic nominee.

  6. “I DO think liberals are evil, not just wrong. There’s a war on. Lives are at stake.”
So,when the Enemy decides to kill their own,why do you bitch about it so much?

  7. “..Rural conservatives feel that their world is under siege…”
Its not only Rural conservatives that reel this way….there are plenty of us in the cities…
In Canada the Liberal Progressives (Global Marxists in disguise), have taken a page from US Liberals in decrying that all conservatives are Bible thumping Christians and would kill the abortion acts – gay marriage etc…well to that I say this. I’m not..not even close …could care less about Religion. Yet I’m not a fan of Abortion on demand, the LGBTQXYZ Agenda of “normalization – elementary indoctrination” nor of Affirmative Action or doing anything about Climate change other than adapting.
A Semi social Liberal and staunch FISCAL conservative. One that believes Government should stay the hell our of my life, protect our country’s borders from all enemies foreign and domestic, provide for a strong military, produce an environment that is investment friendly and be PROHIBITED in partaking/policy making in Religious like Ideology such as Climate Change.
As for Christianity..I have no issue with that or them…better that than promoting a 7th Century Barbaric quasi religious ideology such as ISLAM.
Would that I get to see that in my lifetime….pah..too many F’n slack jawed wanking losers in this country.

  8. “Electoral College nuttiness”
The electoral college worked exactly as always intended and is certainly fair. Trump won over 3,000 counties. Clinton won just over 50 counties. Her counties included LA County, Cook County and the biggest 4 of the 5 boroughs and most other big city counties.
As Trump said, if popular vote mattered he would have campaigned in New York and California.

  9. “Democrats believe that we are born good, that we create God, not that he created us. If we are our own God, as the Democrats say, then we need to look at something else to blame when things go wrong — not us.”
That line reminds me of something P.J. O’Rourke once said. He stated that Republicans believed in God and Democrats believed in Santa Claus.
The only problem was that Santa Claus did not exist.

  10. Bobby is nibbling around the edges of the rural/urban divide, but still can’t see how absurd the dichotomy is.
As a resident of Ontra-I-Owe, we see it all the time. The idiots in Toronto would spend $5 million on a commuter bus that would try and fail to run on pixie dust, then double down and order a fleet of them, (Paid for naturally by provincial tax dollars)
While at the same time sniveling and whining about a rural resident idling his 6 year old pick-up at minus 35% to warm it up before a 1 hour drive to work.

  11. EweKnowmee, were to being to dissect your stupidity.
I won’t, butt will give you the answer to Trumps win, current established politicians are a bunch of double speaking, lying a$$holes. End of song.
as to the article, a lot of bullshit, by an ignorant of fact dimwit. In that he says conservatives believe….and then runs off at the chops about religion. There are many agnostic and atheist conservatives. That ends that bull$hit. Then there is a fact that world wide most religious people are lefties, especially Katholiks.
Throw in the fact I was taught, by religious nut jobs, the olde lucyfur turned people eeeeevil, and that were born without sin. Geezus, that guy works hard at being ignorant!!!

  12. I have trouble understanding why urban-dwellers are so drawn to liberalism/socialism? What is it about urban living that pushes them in this direction?
I suspect it’s related to trying to manage so many people in so little space. It’s easy to start a bonfire on your property when you live miles from your neighbour, but if they live right next door it could pose a problem. Thus…regulation to the rescue!
Seems like people always look to the government to solve lifestyle issues in the city because everyone impacts everyone else so much. I can park a truck in the middle of a road in the country and who cares? Do that in a city during rush hour and it’s a massive problem.
Anyway, that’s my theory. But it’s not complete. Any thoughts?

  13. Not impressed by Leonard’s article. He’s basically saying its the red-knecks that dunnit.
However, without California, Hillary lost the popular vote. But, she also lost the urban working class and many urban others who kept their heads down to avoid being ostracized but were fed up with having to live like that.
No, Mr. Leonard, you have only begun to comprehend; you have a long way to go and when you get there, your friends will no longer talk to you.

  14. While I generally welcome leftist political introspection. This op ed presents no such thing. By using the simplistic language of JC Watts describing conservative (Christians) as fundamentally believing people are “bad” … the author gives comfort to his fellow election-loser leftists. Every leftist will read the quote that Christians believe all people are … baaaad mmmmKay … and rest happily in their belief that the right wing is totally NUTZ!! Who, in their right minds can believe ALL people all bad. See!! The right wing HATES people!! These are words of COMPORT for leftists … not INTROSPECTION.
The so-called Christian Right wingers do NOT believe all people are “bad” – WRONG word.. We are “imperfect” people … not “bad”. Liberal leftists believe people are perfect, and that God is bad. Or in the case of “the children” … that all kids are perfect … their parents are bad (coincidentally, that’s what Scientologist cult members believe). Liberals and leftists believe only THEY can “fix” all of humankinds imperfections … through the almighty power of the god of State. The god of government regulations. The god of tax punishment … or carbon tax punishment. All this accomplishes is to HARM the imperfect humans (while making a “chosen” few very, very, rich). The Christian Right wingers know that seeking the words and wisdom given us by our Creator is the ONLY way to self-improvement. Until we look beyond our own selfish impulses, we will be forever flawed. When we worship deathly things … jihad, drugs, multiple sexual partners … government salvation … we invariably destroy ourselves.
This writer is giving comfort to his fellow leftists, that is all. Nowhere in the article does he call on his fellow travelers to transform their own lives and adopt the belief system of the poor, rural, fundamentalist, hick, uneducated Trump voters. Who in their right minds would HATE other people … eh comrades ?

  15. Funny isn’t it … that the Blue firewall states… turned into a Red firewall electoral college WIN for Trump. Trump … mocked as the WORST candidate in the HISTORY of America … transformed the firewall electoral votes from HERS to HIS. And now the losers who touted their electoral firewall now want it eliminated. Nice try … LOSERS.
And BTW … you have run fresh OUT of novelty candidates. The black thing’s been done, and YOUR OWN VOTERS weren’t the least bit interested in the female thing. Meh … went YOUR voters! Even YOUR PEOPLE have recognized that candidates who can ONLY claim a special interest group as their “accomplishment” isn’t worth voting for. Good luck coming up with a viable candidate LOSERS !

  16. I love the comments at the slimes. It’s always useful to know how liberals view their fellow man. Personally, I believe that a purge is overdue. It would be interesting to see how well cities do cut off from the interior. Rural areas would survive, albeit not without severe consequences however I believe cities would turn into urban cesspools of murder and decay where safety was only purchased at the point of a gun. Sort of like Marseille on steroids.

  17. I get oh so very, VERY, tired of the ‘racist’ epithet – I watched live streams of a number of Trump rallies, and there was nothing, NOTHING, uttered by Trump or his supporters that could be classified as ‘racism’ by anyone with functioning brain cells.
In one instance, (and I am sure there were many others), prior to the speakers coming onstage, when the cameras were just focused on the crowds, I noticed a solitary black man, (the crowd was primarily white which I presume simply reflected the local demographic), and I watched him mainly due to all the negative lefty propaganda, moving around and chatting to people he obviously knew. He greeted them as friends and they reciprocated.
I am not a ‘racist’, throughout my life I have had friends of numerous races – if I like them, and they like me, we become friends – it’s not due to their colour, or regardless of their colour, it’s because we LIKE each other.
And I am conservative, right wing, probably VERY right wing.

  18. Progressives want your ‘stuff’ and don’t want to pay for it. It is something like looting but more civilized don’t you know. Just the way it is.

  19. She lost the popular vote outside of California. Probably all those illegals voting with their Cal driving licenses and a push from La Raza. The fact that her supporters didn’t turn out to support ‘er was due to her being a bad corrupt candidate who didn’t give a fart about people and thought she was going to swan in.

  20. NME000 What you wrote could very well be the very best of what you have submitted to SDA to date. It’s just a pity we can’t understand or read your gibberish.
    BCer

  21. “Do you guys not realize that Hillary won the popular vote…”
One more time: both Clinton and Trump were out to win at least 270 electoral votes. Those were the constitutional rules they were playing by.
The argument over the popular vote is an issue for future presidential elections, not past ones.
It would take a constitutional amendment though. Good luck with that, my friend.
In the meantime, it’s over and the inauguration is 13 days away.
“Move on!” (as progressives always like to say).

  22. Egads. Trump won because the Middle was fed up with being kr@pped on; as in stiffed, scapegoated, and thrown under the bus. Am, I surprised that there were 62,000,000 voters who stepped up, Yes. But, revolutions occur when people realize that they are not alone in being dissatisfied and alienated.

  23. The popular vote is irrelevant. The US is a republic, not a 51% diktat by the majority, and it has always been so. It was deliberately constructed that way to protect minority stated from being crushed by the handful of very large states. As for the Dems getting it together, the Dems have lost more than 1000 seats, federal and state, during the eight years of Obama’s rule. Seems to me that having been largely reduced to a coastal urban rump, the Dems no longer represent very much at all. Just like their last candidate for POTUS who didn’t stand for very much of anything.

  24. I love it when retarded liberals come around :
2008 JOHN MCCAIN The freaking traitor – 59,948,323 votes
    2016 TRUMP the hero – 62,979,879
    EAT IT

  25. While I would not exactly string the words together the way you did I do agree with the spirit of what you said. That writer was wrong from first premise; evil and good are not useful categories to define the basic spirit of humanity and certainly don’t describe the divide between conservatives and liberals attitude. I think the problem is more along the lines of how gullible or not a person is to the current slop coming from the media. I don’t even believe the divide on Trump voters was the conservative versus liberal but more along the lines of those with their eyes open versus the ones believing the same old lies as in “What difference at this point does it make?”.

  26. As a Christian I believe we are born with a ‘sin nature’. That doesn’t mean we are innately bad, it means that what ever scheme we come up with will eventually turn to crap. Thus Trump is no more the saviour than Obama is the problem. We are simply shoveling **** against the tide. When this shovel breaks we grab another. Some shovels, like socialism, are broken before we pick them up. Others like capitalism break with usage. Our job is simply to keep from getting overwhelmed with the ‘stuff’ we are supposed to be shoveling.

  27. I see the penultimate paragraph of the piece says “disastrous Trump presidency”. Is that the reason that the NYT printed it.

  28. “…Hillary won the popular vote and only lose(SIC) because Dems didn’t show up? …”
So you mean she should be president because people who you think are her supporters didn’t actually support her?

  29. My daughter and i went to two trump rallies in phoenix. Nicest people ever. Only aholes were demonstrators. I won’tsay ‘lots’, but there was diversity. Over 50% women.
Great times. Long waits. Was within 10ft of the hair.
    Blew my mind.
    Cheers
Btw, sheriff joe is a rock star.

  30. Wrong, wrong, wrong!
Conservatives and libertarians believe people are good, and can be trusted to self determination.
Liberals believe people are bad, and need to be controlled to protect them from themselves. The catch is, they believe themselves (each and everyone of them) “enlightened”; and deem it their responsibility to tell everyone what to do (and when we don’t listen they rage).

  31. What explains the idiocy of the liberal elite? It’s their education.
Getting to the point where you can’t imagine voting for Brexit or Trump takes years of hard, misguided study.
For months, the so-called liberal elite has been writing articles, having radio and TV discussions, giving sermons (literally) and making speeches in which it has struggled to understand those strange creatures: ordinary people.
The elite is bemused by what drives these people to make perverse decisions about Brexit and Trump. Are they racist, narrow-minded or just stupid? Whatever the reason, ordinary people have frankly been a disappointment.

The elite are supposed to be educated. So why are they so silly?
Ah! There is a clue. That word ‘educated’. What does ‘educated’ mean today? It doesn’t mean they know a lot about the world. It means they have been injected with the views and assumptions of their teachers. They have been taught by people who themselves have little experience of the real world. They have been indoctrinated with certain ideas. Here are some key ones….
    http://www.spectator.co.uk/2017/01/what-explains-the-idiocy-of-the-liberal-elite-its-their-education/

  32. Let’s try to understand why members of the elite get so cross when others don’t take the same view of Brexit and Clinton as they do. It’s partly a sense of entitlement. People talk of a culture of entitlement among those who live on benefits. But the elite has its own entitlement culture. They think that because they studied English literature at Durham they understand the world better than a plumber in Croydon. They think they are superior and therefore their view should prevail. They also think they are morally superior because they hold to the views which they were told were virtuous. Anyone who appears not to subscribe to these views must, of necessity, be a sinner or else appallingly misled by the Daily Mail or some other evil force. It is outrageous to the elite that the work of the Devil should prevail.
They are virtuous. They know best. They are the chosen ones. They have only a token belief in democracy. They expect and intend to prevail.

  33. Hey stupid……you can’t seem to grasp the concept that is RIGHT in the name, ‘United STATES of America.’ It’s NOT ‘The nation of America,’ and it’s not just ‘America.’
The VOTE for president is the cumulative of the UNITED states – and Trump won this – and won it in a landslide. And if that isn’t enough for you, the Democrats have been getting their butts kicked in the down ballot races BIG TIME since Obama has been elected. So take a hike.

  34. Exactly. I live in SW Iowa, have now for 21 years after being raised in NorCal, working in SF for 13 years and St Louis for 9 years. People here are clannish and hard working – living their lives, bettering their lives, actively raising their children. Church is foundational. There is little time for a left wing ideology that dismantles traditional, cultural institutions and leaves nothing in its place. These people are grown ups.

  35. unome, you are clearly revealed by your comments to be an odious, biased, hateful, self-appointed elitist who would fit in well with the storm troopers of any number of murderous totalitarian regimes.
I will take your maligned “mouth breathers” over you any day.
What makes you feel that you have been gifted with the moral and intellectual authority to denigrate the people who grow your food or build your appliances?
I also suggest you work on your cognitive bias as it is blocking you from recognizing some fatal flaws in your fallacious thinking.

  36. It is exactly the sort of sneering ignorance exhibited by this thing that calls itself ‘UnoMe’ that is the reason Trump won. Take a look in the mirror, snowflake. All along it was you.
