President-elect Donald J. Trump’s transition staff has issued a blanket edict requiring politically appointed ambassadors to leave their overseas posts by Inauguration Day, according to several American diplomats familiar with the plan, breaking with decades of precedent by declining to provide even the briefest of grace periods.
The mandate — issued “without exceptions,” according to a terse State Department cable sent on Dec. 23, diplomats who saw it said — threatens to leave the United States without Senate-confirmed envoys for months in critical nations like Germany, Canada and Britain. In the past, administrations of both parties have often granted extensions on a case-by-case basis to allow a handful of ambassadors, particularly those with school-age children, to remain in place for weeks or months.
Mr. Trump, by contrast, has taken a hard line against leaving any of President Obama’s political appointees in place as he prepares to take office on Jan. 20 with a mission of dismantling many of his predecessor’s signature foreign and domestic policy achievements. “Political” ambassadors, many of them major donors who are nominated by virtue of close ties with the president, almost always leave at the end of his term; ambassadors who are career diplomats often remain in their posts.
A senior Trump transition official said there was no ill will in the move, describing it as a simple matter of ensuring that Mr. Obama’s overseas appointees leave the government on schedule, just as thousands of political aides at the White House and in federal agencies must do. The official, who spoke on the condition of anonymity about internal deliberations, said the ambassadors should not be surprised about being held to a hard end date.”

  1. Just as the Divider-In-Chief Obama takes as many liberites as he likes during his status as a lame-duck, and thus going against “decades of tradition”, why should Trump be blamed for likely to responding likewise in his role as the incoming President?

  3. Many of the ambassadors are political hacks or big donors (I repeat myself). Their roles are mostly schmoozing and bureaucratic. They are mostly not diplomats and mostly do not make policy about anything important.

  4. These appointments had as much validity as any of Obama’s executive orders. They can be rescinded the moment his successor takes the oath of office.

  5. Once again, Trump is demonstrating why an “outsider” WON the presidency. Why Trump destroyed the feckless and ineffective Republican Party candidates. Why Trump destroyed the Clinton machine that spent at least $ 1 Billion dollars to defeat him (not counting the Clinton Foundation graft). Trump is not just another spineless politician. He’s THE PEOPLES leader. He answers ONLY to THE PEOPLE who elected him … not to the political, and corporate interests that have been running our country for the the past 100 years. And THE PEOPLE want the swamp drained … NOW! THE PEOPLE want an immediate REVERSAL of everything enacted by the outgoing Manchurian Candidate.
    I am very sorry that Caroline Kennedy is having to find new accommodations at her advanced age. That her beautiful Japanese home has a NO VACANCY sign hung in the window. But something tells me she will land on her feet.

  6. Next up, the Director of the CIA, the director of Department of Justice, and list goes on. The Fake Russia hacking story is their last kick at the can. I’ll believe Julian Assange before I’d believe any of these Dem puppet clowns that are running around claiming the hack story. I would be also asking, if we are being hack so easy, what the hell are you guys good for??

  10. The reason for this measure understandable is you think about it for a moment.
    The recent U.N. Security Council motion condemning Israel was designed to subvert and/interfere with the policy of the Trump administration, an attempt at a poison pill.
    This demonstrated that instead of accepting electoral defeat and respecting the U.S. Constitution. The Obama appointees will be or have been instructed to sabotage the incoming Trump Presidency and policy decisions.
    This will go deepest into the State Department appointees and bureaucracy.
    Only those who understand Marxism (and/or Sharia) understand civilizational war.

    Financial donors turned Ambassadors for the current administration are obviously in the fashion of the Chicago Mafia, and judging by the current state of the streets of the Windy City, most of those countries are cheering The Donanld in this decision.

  17. Wishful thinking is the hope that the next ambassador to Canada makes his first trip north to Saskatchewan to meet Wall before presenting his credentials to the GG… just to send the right message of who the new administration is actually listening to in this country.
    Oh and maybe a stop over in Calgary to meet with the last real PM we had.

    I am sure you were as proud as I when our PM Chretien appointed Alfonso Gagliano ambassador to Denmark. Must have been his fluency in the language.

  19. OMG Trump is following the letter of the law! What will become of the US? Well, I expect his ambassadors not to be fighting Trump for 6 months until they are replaced and some professionals will be put in place – Trump does not need to give sinecures to donors as he had none.

    and other ventures by allowing their temporary termite appointees in government
    to transfer into the regular civil service en masse. This seems to be a heads up
    that those RINO pushover happy times deals are not going to fly this time.

  24. The press is wringing their hands over this “unprecedented” move by President Trump. This is what Obama did to Bush’s hack appointments. The press gave him a tongue bath, praising his “bold” and decisive move.
