Greenland’s ice sheet kicked off 2017 gaining about eight gigatons of snow and ice, which is well above what’s usually added to the ice sheet Jan. 1 for the last 24 years, according to Danish meteorologists.
In fact, Greenland’s ice sheet has been gaining ice and snow at a rate not seen in years based on Danish Meteorological Institute (DMI) data. DMI reports the Greenland ice sheet’s “mass surface budget” has been growing significantly since October.
From the very same Danish Meterological Institute source article: “Satellite observations over the last decade show that the ice sheet is not in balance. The calving loss is greater than the gain from surface mass balance, and Greenland is losing mass at about 200 gigatons/year.”
Calving loss is largely a geothermal event. Al Gore points out that the inside of the earth has a temperature of millions of degrees so there’s still lots of change ahead.

I just spoke with one of the leading “ice” authorities in the world.
In speaking with him regarding the calving of ice, he told me that there are two major currents that influence the Pole(s). One current circles while the other does a basic “S” curve thru the middle. When the dissecting current is weak, there is relatively small amounts of calving, but when this current is strong, like it has been recently, the ice breaks off and is forced out into relatively warmer open waters away from the poles. He did not know the reason why or how the shifts in current strengths fluctuated but that these “s” currents cast the icebergs off more rapidly.
In thinking about this lately, I was wondering if this is therefore a warmer current and/or whether this current, by the shear strength of the undertow, tug at the bottom of the ice mass and act like an ice pick, chipping away at the stability of the ice sheets?
Hopefully this doesn’t mean the delicate little Snow Flake generation won’t melt away in a hurry.

North American forests are “harvested” to produce valuable products such as lumber and pulpwood. Pellets are made from residue and waste. The energy equation is ridiculous in shipping such low density fuel across the Atlantic to avoid higher density Coal in close proximity.
