Many on the Left consider 2016 to have been a terrible year. Lawrence Solomon begs to differ.

2016 wrote the epitaph to political correctness, the most insidious of the evils facing society and also among the most toxic. To silence challengers to today’s orthodoxy, self-styled “social justice warriors” on the left have been quick to label dissenters as racists, sexists, homophobes or Islamophobes, unaware that in previous generations the dissenters from the orthodoxies — those who fought for emancipation of the slaves, women’s suffrage, gay and other civil rights — succeeded precisely because upholders of the orthodoxies were unable to silence dissent.
Political correctness is not benign, as many imagine. It hampers everything from fighting the war on terror, to acquiring energy independence, to alleviating poverty. Neither is political correctness popular with the general public — opinion polls show two-thirds to three quarters of Americans, including millennials and students — oppose it.

  5. “Political Correctness” is itself a misnomer. “Progressive (leftist) Fascism” is actually more accurate as it is only the free speech of whites or (any colour of) conservatives and libertarians, climate apostates, etc that are targeted. Retrograde Imams can say anything with impunity as can Rappers, FNs, leftist professors, feminists, LGBTQRSTUV…advocates, etc.
    Brexit and Trump are positive signs but the fascism isn’t going away anytime soon, particularly in the deranged dominion. I doubt that Trump or anyone like him would have beaten the Spawn. The late Mayor Rob Ford was likely as close as we have come in terms of a successful populist. We’ll never know how he would have polled nationally. Canada will continue to degrade at this pace until the LPC brings out their knives and dumps the Spawn and his Butts-boy and even then, considering the quality of his Caucus, the pace may only slow imperceptibly.

    Please accept with no obligation, implied or implicit, my best wishes for an environmentally conscious, socially responsible, low-stress, non-addictive, gender-neutral celebration of the winter solstice holiday, practiced within the most enjoyable traditions of the religious persuasion of your choice, or secular practices of your choice, with respect for the religious/secular persuasion and/or traditions of others, or their choice not to practice religious or secular traditions at all. I also wish you a fiscally successful, personally fulfilling and medically uncomplicated recognition of the onset of the generally accepted calendar year 2017, but not without due respect for the calendars of choice of other cultures whose contributions to society have helped make America great. Not to imply that America is necessarily greater than any other country nor the only America in the Western Hemisphere . Also, this wish is made without regard to the race, creed, color, age, physical ability, religious faith or sexual preference of the wish.

    Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

  7. 2016 was not a victory for conservatism. Conservatism is vertically dead in Canada and Trump is likely a quirk in the plunging graph of what was the greatest nation ever known.
    What is there to cheer or feel good about? Progressives control the education system, the media and the bureaucracy. They have even made huge inroads into what was considered the standard bearer of conservatism, the business community. The number of companies and individuals who are living off the government tit have never been larger.

  8. Political Correctness has a very long way to go before it fully runs its course. It takes terrible events to finish a movement like that.

  11. I like Mr. Solomon’s optimism, but the situation after Donald Trump’s election reminds me of Churchill’s remarks after the Battle of El Alamein: “…Now this is not the end. It is not even the beginning of the end. But it is, perhaps, the end of the beginning. …”

    Finally a title for which his breeding,upbringing and natural talents all align.
    Truly it takes a real Prat to impose a tax on everything, taxing the compounds of life itself in the name of enriching the ruling parasites of this generation.
