Indeed. Most millennials have no idea what effect the group had on society and popular culture.
One of my aunts back in Berlin went totally nuts for them, even sneaking phrases from song lyrics into her conversation. She was in her 20s at the time.
TV shows like Doctor Who were strongly influenced by them. They made a cameo appearance on one DW episode. The second Doctor (played by the late Patrick Troughton) had a Beatle haircut. The third Doctor (John Pertwee) had a sidekick (Jo Grant, played by Katy Manning) who was also a Beatles fan, sneaking lyrics into her dialog just like my aunt did.
That’s a great post.
The success enjoyed by the Monkees wasn’t all due to the great pop songs they were performing; they had been picked for their talent. Jones could sing and the others were good enough. I seem to recall that studio musicians were used on some of the song cuts and that infuriated Nesmith.
All said and done it was a great time for popular music. I can’t imagine anything like it ever happening again.
Linda Ronstadt…. one of my favourite singers during my late teens and early 20s. Her album Heart Like A Wheel was a classic.

LOL!
