The Tomahawk is a pretty small plane but can still carry a few hundred pounds of explosive. Also, how did this guy commit armed robbery and get the charges stayed? Tie this incident with the power boat that came within 30 meters of a BC ferry last week and I’d say there is a good chance that the ‘boys’ are running a few dry runs. Much like the clock boy in the States we have no idea how many are out there thinking about soft targets and perhaps trying different scenarios. The distance from Markham to Peterborough is roughly 70 miles.
A Piper Tomahawk cruise speed is around 115MPH.
Flying directly, that only takes about 36 Min.
The crash at Peterborough happened around 1;30 AM as in NIGHT TIME
What time did he steal the aircraft,,,12:30 AM?
Some questions I have are,,,
Did he get high enough for Toronto ATC to pick him up, and if so, what was he doing Navigation wise. ( flying in circles, lost and disorientated, headed to Toronto, violating Toronto airspace and ATC having to divert traffic,,,don’t know)
Did he talk to anyone via the radio? (if ATC picked him up they were very likely trying to talk to him)
A lot of this missing info will show if he knew how to fly or if this was a joyride gone wrong.
I’m initially leaning to the joyride scenario, as that has happened before with at least one kid and a small aircraft.
And that’s why I find the graphic above misleading.

you are making a lot of ASSumptions with very little thought used. He may have been below ATC radar used road to navigate flying at a slow speed, and with some error in time guessing, and voila, you got him were he’s at unnoticed and in longer time than it may take a regular flyer.
As to “joy flying”, what ever the cops found in the aircraft that prompted them to look at it as a national security issue is what you are ignoring, and pretty much negates the need to answer any of your questions

Well Ken, when someone brings a poisonous snake into their home and it bites and kills someone, the root cause of that death is the welcoming of the snake into the home.

How much fuel was in it, ( I thought i read it was topped up, meaning at least ( roughly ) 5hrs ,even at full throttle. 6hrs at reduced power)
How long was he up? ( as in what time did he steal it. If security cams have a time stamp, if they picked it up,or when ATC first noticed or talked to him.)

A common reason for the wreckage looking like that is because of a spin incident leading to loss of control.
The aircraft essentially pancakes flat.
If the first responders found fuel around the aircraft, then no, he still had fuel. Not all aircraft that crash burn.
Flying at night is trickier than day flying, and is why Private pilots have to get a night endorsement to do it.
What is taught there is some very basic instrument flying to try to prevent the pilot from getting disorientated by optical and sensory illusions that may lead to stalling or spinning the aircraft while simply maneuvering it.
For example.
if you turn out over open water at night, you have no horizon reference, sometimes leading from a simple turn into a descending spiral and the improperly coreecting leadin to a stall and or spin.
If you are low when that happens, you re screwed

Not being a flyer, I assumed one would expect to see a fire in this case. My comment should have included… “It will be important to verify that there was significant fuel detected at the crash site.”
I second those comments about the jihadis deliberately recruiting the mentally ill. Such people may be much more susceptible to being cajoled into doing the wrong thing. It wouldn’t surprise me if the young mo’ played with Flight Simulator a lot on his computer. Being crazy doesn’t necessarily equal being stupid, and he could have picked up enough useful information to steal and fly a small plane.

Also know these small airstrips. Issue here is not so much how airport was secured as to how this man was able to apparently break into and start airplane. Rather thought the average plane had – at the very least – required a key or some other security device before it could be started.
Reminds me of a story a friend once told me. Seems he was taking a course at a local college, situated near the airport, which featured a visiting professor. Professor, watching clock, said he had to go. Students, more attuned to the local situation, said “Not yet, sir, we’ll tell you.”. Professor continued on, visibly nervous. A piper tomahawk is a light 2 seat trainer. I have flown small aircraft, including that type, for thirty years, and keep IFR current. Credibility established!
No amount of flight sim ground training will allow a person to take off / land a small aircraft. You will almost certainly be unable to even start it. It isn’t a car. Fuel valves must be set, pumps activated and shut off, engine primed, mixture full rich, magneto set to the impulse mag only, throttle cracked, and press the starter. Once it fires you advance the throttle to about 800 rpm, switch to both mags, and then lean the mixture. Every aircraft is also slightly different due to the accumulation of little changes over time. Some of these little trainers are fourty or more years old.
If that young, allegedly mentally ill, man managed to get that far in the dark with no hands on training it borders on miraculous. Just taxiing in the dark is unbelievably disorienting, let alone taking off into the dark. Fully trained and experienced daytime VFR pilots won’t even attempt it, and for good and lethal reasons, without some sort of in the aircraft training.
Small airfields have no security at all. People generally lock the doors as the avionics are expensive, and take the mag key home to prevent accidents. This one was stolen from a shop, which was almost certainly locked, while it was undergoing its annual inspection. Per a video of the owner that I saw it wasn’t even fully serviceable yet – even more amazing that it flew at all. Any persons car is far more dangerous than a light aircraft. Nice, for example…
While I can speculate as to the intentions of an allegedly mentally ill man with a history of attempted crime named Mohammed, as can anyone with a lick of cmmon sense, I can provide a solid opinion on the practicality of an untrained person stealing an airplane and successfully flying it any distance in the dark.
It is so unlikely (flat out impossible is closer to the truth) that it might just be true.

Fortunately for others, he was no Colton Harris Moore, better known as the “barefoot bandit” who was a serial plane thief who led authorities on a two year chase before they finally caught him after flying a hot little plane to the Bahamas. If Muhammed had had the brains and skills of the barefoot bandit there would have been a higher body count and much more damage than we saw in Peterborough.

He maybe able to take off during the day with little knowledge of how to, but as you said. Nighttime, yeah having a hard time with that one. Trying to keep the plane headed down the runway with no lights (runway) Many small airports in the USA you have to call the airport (radio) and the lights will come on. Plus, how would he even know what it rotation speed is and rudder action to keep plane going straight.

I’ve never flown an airplane, but in the late 80s I did a lot of “flying” on an early version of MS Flight Simulator.
As a lark, I figured out how to land a Cessna 150 on the top of World Trade Center 2 (WTC2), the south tower’s helipad. (Fly into a slight head wind and basically stall above the helipad, dropping 10 feet straight down.) My idea for doing this was by seeing the Goodyear blimp fly past WTC 2, while I was there on the observation floor. I have pictures of the blimp flying really close to the WTC 1. At the time I wondered what would happen if the blimp, or an aircraft would crash into one of the towers.
After 9/11 Microsoft removed the ability to crash into the towers on upgrades to earlier versions of Flight Sim, then took out the towers in later versions.
I am guessing young Mohammed trained on a flight sim too.
I am sorry to hear about the loss of the airplane. Fortunately no one was injured. I learned to fly in a tomahawk. Nice trainer, except for the tricky spin characteristics.
