Temperatures dipped below freezing in several of France’s prized central wine regions this week, striking both Burgundy and the Loire Valley. In the Côte d’Or, Chablis to the north and Côte Chalonnaise, frost arrived early on the morning of April 25 and again the next night and the morning of April 27, resulting in frost that damaged the newly formed buds. Farther west, central regions of the Loire Valley, including Chinon, Bourgueil and Vouvray, were similarly hit.
“We cannot estimate the damage at the moment,” said Alex Gambal, the Beaune-based négociant. “Everyone is calling everyone else and it will take a few days to see what results.”

Early reports from the Loire were not hopeful. “In the memory of vignerons, there are two major freezes: 1991 and 1994. This is on the level of 1994. It’s historic,” said Guillaume Lapaque, director of the federation of the Indre-Loire wines trade group and the Bourgueil wine syndicate. “It froze on three nights–April 18, April 25 and then April 27.”
The answer is obvious: we must destroy the middle class carbon emitters to save the French vinyards.

I am spending the weekend here in Lake Tahoe, and it snowed heavily for a while last night, and the rain coming up the hill was EPIC … driving freezing rain with -0- visibility. ALL the lakes are FULL to capacity, long before their usual peak after the complete melt and runoff in June/July.
Jerry Brown is gonna have to declare some sort of OTHER new eco-emergency … cause the “drought” (I call it a NORMAL Mediterranean CA climate) is OVER. But Jerry has already enabled a host of new water FEES and TAXES to PUNISH water users in CA. France has nearly 60 nuclear reactors and it’s an outstanding success story, giving them almost the cheapest electricity in Europe. Add to this the massive revenues the French garner by selling power to certain other European countries (many of whom high-mindedly tout being nuclear-free and “green”).
But fear not! For the left in France absolutely loathes nuclear power and is working earnestly to end the horror of cheap and abundant power.
