Just have to say that my disdain for Heady Hedy is not the burning crosses lie. She also stood up in the House when income tax laws were being discussed (back when Preston was a true conservative). She screamed if a woman to stayed at home to care for kids she was oppressed by the (evil) male who wanted her barefoot, pregnant and in the kitchen. An ignorant insult to Canadian families who chose for one parent to stay home.

Pierre Trudeau gave the CRTC authority to screen out “foreign” content so that Canadians were stuck with CBC, CTV and a few other liberal leaning media outlets. It was a crime to put a satellite dish up and get signals from beyond what the CRTC permitted. Those rules got tossed after he was gone. It would not be a surprise for Justin Trudeau to follow that path, and echo what China does, in terms of regulating what we get as information. Hedy Fry’s complaint that things she doesn’t regard as “true” are being broadcast by people she doesn’t agree with is an example of the thinking.
The fact that such thinking is in no way ‘liberal’ doesn’t matter. The Liberal Party of Canada long ago gave up the pretence of really believing in freedom.
This is actually concerning. I would not be surprised if they attempted to shut down conservative voices on the net. It is already hard to find things like articles skeptical about climate change anything critical about refugees unless you know where to look. I think the censorship and manipulation will only get worse.

Relax, there will be as much freedom of speech as you want, the problem will be that a brainwashed population just won’t hear a damn thing you say. Haven’t you noticed yet? A country that is 98% communist doesn’t need secret police or a gulag, they have schools and that’s all they need. Mind you they won’t object to the occasional show trial just to remind people of who is in charge.
PET’s rules on “foreign” content were a joke.
I remember when he mandated Canadian content rules for music played on the radio. That often meant that Canadian performers recorded cover versions of songs that were played on American stations, and many of them, frankly, were lousy.
However, physics respects no national boundaries. Where I grew up in northern B. C., I could hear stations in, say, Seattle and their signals were often quite good. Why did I have to listen to the cover versions on Canadian stations when I could hear the original recordings on the American stations, thanks to favourable propagation conditions?
The CRTC was often obtuse. In the part of B. C. I grew up in, we were restricted to one TV channel (a CBC affiliate) because of the CRTC. Then enterprising soul put up an antenna and, I assume, a repeater on a nearby microwave tower and we were able to watch a second channel (CTV). The signal wasn’t great but it was an improvement over what we had for more than a decade.
Similarly, someone set up a satellite receiver a few years later and we were able to watch a movie channel. (I assume that it wasn’t encrypted as many such signals weren’t in those days.) Unfortunately, that was closed down after about a year because the whole setup was illegal. Entreaties to Ottawa by local citizens were ignored.
Things started changing after the introduction of pay-TV signals throughout Canada and, by the mid-1980s, the region was able to watch a variety of channels.
That’s what fascists do……control the messaging.
Do leftists even know who Mario Savio was anymore ? Do they not recall it was THEY who were demanding Free Speech in the 1960’s ? How in the world can these same people be fighting Free Speech now ? The answer is obvious – they were NEVER in favor of free speech … they just wanted to CONTROL the Speech all along.
It reminds me of MLK Jr.’s “I have a dream” speech. The vision of a colorblind world, where people are only “judged by the content of their character”, has been replaced by every manner of race baiting and pandering. It’s as if they never actually BELIEVED in “the dream”. They just wanted to get over on whitey
This is an opportunity for conservatives in Canada.
If the Liberals start to try to shut down “offending” voices, they need to pilloried for their attack on free speech. It would put the lie to much of the touchy feely goodness that Trudeau talked about.
The CPC needs to become the party of free speech and internet freedom. It would be a real change from the policies of the Harper years, but I believe it would be the right thing to do, as well as politically beneficial.
I have a suggestion for SDA, we should create a list of comments that Media organizations like CBC block, for example this one:

They already do control free speech. Just try posting a pro-right comment on CBC.Ca and you’ll learn that quickly!! I’ve had hundreds of comments deleted by the CBC.
The worst that comes to mind is a few days before the Oct. 2015 election, when I posted the comment:
”If you love this country, you’ll vote Conservative.”
It was deleted.
I do however believe that my $$$ support of Rebel Media will be fair retaliation!!
