  18. Thanks for the video Lance. Very interesting stuff. I love to hear really smart people talk. A couple of comments:
    1. Her analysis applies only to the English language and probably only to North American English. I’ll bet Chinese would be a tough one since it uses inflection in a different way than English.
    2. What is the deal voice inflection these days? Hard for me to describe it. I hear it mostly in younger women. An example is at about 55 seconds into the video: “So I’m going to play you two different (pitch goes up) wave files.” Frequently this also appears in a declarative sentences which almost make the sentence sound like (raising pitch)a question. (sounds as if is a question). My 30 year old daughter speaks this way too. Drives me crazy.
    Ah well, doesn’t matter. As I have said before, humans will be replaced by the AI but we must teach the AI to talk to us first. It was a good run.

    It’s called uptalking. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/High_rising_terminal
    Young women use it a lot; it has the effect of blunting declarative statements and turning them into interrogatives. Whether the speaker intends it or not, it implies uncertainty and insecurity. I saw it 25 years ago in high school, so it’s not new; one of my teachers always responded with “are you asking me or telling me?” which shut it down pretty quickly.

    characteristic type of speech has some connection with modern day Feminism. I tend to tune out those who speak in this manner.
    In a study done by Gopher et al.,we have labelled this phenomena as “Progressive Pitch”.
    And by the way, I really like what the presenter has done with her hair.

    Appear to be sympathetic, listening to every last sob story, and repeating it. (Never question it though, and of course NEVER assume the native has ANY personal responsibility whatsoever)
    The other reason progs clamp on to this issue? its similar to this, “BUT THE CHILDREN!” It shuts down discussion.
    Thing is, all these positions are based upon Liberals, deep down, seeing natives as less than equal, unintelligent, so those ‘brave’ progs have to rush in and help/save the natives, on their terms.
    The natives will never progress as a culture or society, or as individuals, until they stop blaming everybody else (whitey, gubermint, schools, immigrants, etc) and accept that they, and they alone are responsible for their own well being, education, and jobs.
