This mishap is an unfortunate convergence of too many stupid people.
Buddy of mine had a husky. He put in the yard during the worst blizzards and the dog wouldn’t want to come in. He said if it was curled up in a ball and you reached down to pet it you could feel that it was really hot.
My cousins’ husky was too hot in the house and even in the winter (in Calgary) would sleep out on the picnic table at night. One morning they didn’t know where she went. There was a heavy snowfall overnight and the snow covered her and she was quite content to sleep on the table without moving, getting blanketed by a few inches of snow.
We have a Rotty. Yesterday (-12C) we were out on our morning run and he went splashing through the creek. They are built for cold. He’ll go lie out on the deck in -10C weather and below to take in the sun for a couple of hours.
The dog officer plainly has little understanding of different dog breeds.

When I was growing up in Northern Ontario we had a Shepherd/Lab cross. It stayed outside all the time but would never use the doghouse, even in winter.
I would find circles of ice where he decided to sleep. Happiest mutt we ever owned too.

The animal control officer was bad enough, but I have to wonder about the neighbours. The dog’s a husky–cold winter weather was what its ancestors were bred for.
My father often lets his dachshund outside to take care of “business”. He (i. e., the dog) doesn’t hesitate to let my father know when he wants to come inside, regardless of the weather. The critter’s not dumb.
Neo, don’t forget the moose. I’m sure one of the neighbours would be happy to take one in when the weather gets really cold. Explain to them that moose have short hair.
Growing up in northern Quebec we had a Samoyed which stayed outside all day while I was at school and parents were at work. I’d often come home to him buried under a new fall of snow. We made a dog house for him, but he never used it. A bark and a scratch at the aluminum screen door would tell us when he wanted to come in.
Husky dogs are bred for pulling sleighs for winter transportation.
Until snowmobiles became reliable and affordable, sled dogs were the motor of winter transport in the coldest northern communities.
With food and rest stops, Huskies can go for days pulling sleighs w/loads.
They’re comfortable outside in the coldest weather, all day, all night, all winter.
This has been true for thousands of years in Eskimo, Inuit and Chippewa communities.
None of them built igloos for their Husky sled dogs.
The “Humane” Society employee should be fired for incompetence.
Police officers in the areas with real winter should understand that, too.
Animal rights legislation means anyone with an animal may be charged nonsensical w/criminal offences.
Huskies, all dogs with heavy fur coats, are closer genetically to their wolf ancestors. If they want to get out of the wind, they bury under the snow and the snow underneath them will melt.

The worst thing is that this family won’t get any satisfaction for what has been done to them. If they tried to sue they’d come up against the deep pockets of animal rights groups. I’ve had Samoyeds for the last 60 years and they love to be outside in the snow. One of our dogs refused to come in at night and it was a worried wife who went to look for him the next day. The snow under the wooden steps stirred and out emerged a toasty warm Samoyed with a happy “Sammy smile”. The stupidest part of this story is the requirement to put out water for a dog surrounded by snow! What does the moron of an animal control officer think snow is made of?
Incidentally, a recent study of Northern breeds had shown that the oil in their pads does not freeze like the fat in our feet, only thickens slightly. Also, the arteries and veins in their legs are close together so the warm blood from the heart prevents the returning cool blood from freezing. In summer, this “heat pump effect” cools the outgoing blood so the dogs can survive happily in the heat or cold of the prairies and tundra.

On the weekend were were in Ontario’s “snow belt”, a foot of powder snow, snow coming down, about 16 degrees (F of course), quite balmy actually. About 8PM, i.e., dark.
And we had to literally drag him into the house.

South Dakota? My Great Pyrenees has never been inside, even as low as -43 Celsius. When I had a border collie, I brought him in below -30. When I was growing up the border collie curled up and slept on a hay stack at as low as -50.
We were asked by our former insurance carrier – do you have a dog and how big? They want a premium if you have a mid size dog and up – ’cause ya know they can scam you out of what your policy should already cover, like flood ins.
Then cost for dog tags, $5, $10 and now $15 per dog. But we lost our little dog to wolves this past fall, so just informed the township that were going to feed these wild wolves/coyotes hybrids from now on…they’ll keep the coons at bay – what our little dog’s job was. Bonus is I said: and that recycles food scraps very efficiently and saves us lots on Vet bills. Of course we’re not doing that but the look on the clerks face was priceless! 🙂

Quite so; I purchased a substantial dog house for my Bernese/Husky cross during the nasty cold winter in Ottawa in 1973-74. It was built of lumber the size of railroad ties, with a shingled roof, aluminum siding, and an insulated floor. Every day I returned home to find that the dog had hollowed out a place in one of the snowbanks in the yard and was resting comfortably.
This isn’t about animal welfare.
Its about control.
My girlfriend and I rescued a Husky, Black Lab (we think – and maybe other breeds or crossbreeds) male almost 2 years ago. Guess where he came from? Attawapiskat. He absolutely loves it outside in the cold. We actually thought the neighbours here in Whitby might think we were nuts when he was out laying in the snow on the back deck when it was -10, -15 or -20 degrees C. Fortunately not. Huskies are hardy dogs as has been proven for generations. He’s only a bark or a whack of the door with his paw away from being inside in ten seconds. It’s just dumbass neighbours and incompetent animal control officers that are the problem.

Huskies, come springtime in Saskatchewan, will actually go looking for a snowbank in the shade of a tree, dig a hole in the snow, and stay in the cool spot for hours on end. A bit like government employees hiding in the stock room!
We had a beautiful, loving, Bernese Mountain Dog here in Northern California. If anything … we should have been arrested for keeping her in a Mediterranean climate. We should have been FORCED by the STATE to ship her to Canada. She would have been much more “comfortable” in a FREEZING climate. But she was content to lay-around on our cool hardwood floors, and lived a long, happy life … so I feel no guilt. Eff the government storm troopers.

Almost $400,000 is what OSPCA’s CREATED in charges to now ‘force’ this couple to pay. My fuse would be lit at this point.

60 – this has been going on for a long time. Back in the day, was in a carpool with other parents for our children’s school. The idiocy of other parents was frightening. I always stopped around the corner from the school, so the kids could get out safely, cross at the crosswalk, and continue on to school. But the number of parents who stopped in the middle of the road, or on the wrong side, so their kids were jaywalking in one form or another, was surprising.
There’s a school near us. No way will I drive anywhere near it at school opening and closing. Too many parents jaywalking with their kids.
Our city wants a more “pedestrian-friendly” city. I’m going to email my alderperson and suggest that – in the interest of pedestrian safety, the police conduct a blitz in all school zones and seriously fine the parents who so blatantly disregard not only traffic laws but also common sense. Then they can blitz other areas where pedestrians seriously disregard the law (I can give them a fairly good list). Only after pedestrians are whipped into shape should they impose further restrictions on drivers.

This is a nightmare scenario that dog owners (as well as parents and gun owners) are facing increasingly often these days. Complete random aggressions from the ever expanding state.
On the positive side, the owner should consider herself lucky that the cop did not shot the dog.

I have to go out and coax my mix to come in from the snow in sub zero temps. His dog house is an A frame made from two sliding doors. There’s an insulated house on the back porch but he’d rather be in the glass house or laying in the snow. Hell, my Chihuahua likes to go out in sub zero. He doesn’t stay out but he sure wants to make a fence circuit several times a day. Dogs is dogs.
my dog is teased by the people next door every time she goes out the back yard my guess is they want her to bark so people will complain ,they called the opp 14 times .they tease her get her to bark and then call thats only the half of it they have had and have people they know lundge at her when they see her and even have something going on facebook in hopes that something will happen.the people next door hit her with a broom detained from coming to me right in front of the OPP on my property .They swear they.ll find a way to get her putdown.she is a trianed show dog VA1 junior Ontario Champ.these people destroyed her she does nt want go outs and got several injuries as a result of these people. lacks appetirte. had all kinds of test done,all came back good and the vet says its stress the people beside the people who are beside me waited for us to pass waited until we came up to where she lives and came with a bluebox and through her self in front of her,my dog ran being on aleash became air born hit the sidewalk bounced twice,we took her to the vet right away xrays to insure there were no cracked ribs .This has been going on for two years.SPCA says theres nothing they can do.my sweet dog worries for herself and for her family not funny but sweet she won t go any where unless her whole family is with her I guess she feels safe that way and knows where in her view.ANY SUGGESTION YOURS TRULY PROUD OF MY K9GSD.
