More thoughtless drivel from the CBC!! The article claims that Canada is behind times because we don’t have train travel as they do in (say) England or France. My comment was as follows, and deleted immediately by the ”site administrator, AKA Trudeau’s ”propaganda machine.”
”I’m going to upgrade from plane travel to train travel?? Wow! Some people need to think before they publish! Do you realize that a one hour flight between Winnipeg and Calgary would take 24 hours by train??”
http://www.cbc.ca/radio/the180/letting-canadian-women-sell-their-eggs-passenger-trains-and-ending-elections-for-school-trustees-1.3368081/the-most-passionate-case-you-ll-hear-for-train-travel-in-canada-1.3368299?
I was being very conservative by stating that a one hour flight between Winnipeg and Calgary would take 24 hours by passenger train. The reason being that freight trains have priority over passenger trains in Canada, and it’s been that way for decades. Waiting on the sidings takes up a good part of a day.
Back in the day, spouse was being sent to a conference in Vancouver. Promptly negotiated a deal whereby spouse got equivalent of air fare, which we used to book train trip (a small “roomette” – were advised by porters that should try next go-round for a specific larger one) for ourselves and offsprings. Great trip, though sleep not so good as two bunks and we each schlepped in with an offspring. Got to Vancouver – Palm Sunday – with offsprings dressed in spring garb but several inches of snow on the ground. Was great trip though: used the Sunday to visit aunts and uncles in the greater Vancouver area, and then took offsprings around to see the sights (Stanley Park, here we come) and just relax. Train trip home had same issue with bunks but otherwise great as offsprings could roam around and enjoy more than plane trip. Coming back into city, were alongside the highway and thoroughly enjoyed sitting back in comfort while watching drivers sweating out the trip into town.
Totally agree with Plainzfyre as to impracticality, given time constraints, but still remember our trip as being really great.
Regarding train travel. You are experiencing just that, travel via train. You can argue mileage practicality if you want… ask those that cruise via boat. Train allows a view from a perspective that is unique. We live in an age of speed and convenience. A train gives you time and appreciation speed and arrival can’t.
When you downloaded music years ago, in between downloads because of speed, you listened to those songs… they brought back memories. Once you got high speed you downloaded those songs but didn’t take the time to listen to them. You, I, downloaded the next song we wished without the appreciation. An appreciation lost in convenient speed. Progress.
If you liked Mary’s Boy Child you might also enjoy O Helga Natt also sung by Sissel Kyrkjebø. She sings it beautifully!

Uber has driven the price of a cab licence in New York down from $1.3 million to about $900,000. We are not sure why a cab licence is more than $100.

I have read lately about the Swedish government’s “Muslimization” of that country. This odd article shows that free speech in Sweden is on very shaky ground:
–The website includes lines like, “rape and violence against women is certainly deeply rooted in Muslim culture,” and “19-year-old man arrested for smuggling Somali drugs.”
But according to Attorney General Skarhed, such wording is not sufficient to be called hate speech.
“I have therefore made the decision in this case that it does not cross the line needed for legal action,” Skarhed told Swedish Radio news.
Despite many having objections to the content on Avpixlat, it still lands within the territory of freedom of speech, according to Skarhed.
“To be able to express also uncomfortable and false statements is a very important part of our system of freedom of speech,” Skarhed said.
Earlier there was a prosecutor handling the complaints against the website Avpixlat, but since the site became an official media publisher with a managing editor in June the complaints have been handled by the Attorney General instead.
The website is now protected by the same freedom of expression laws that regulate newspapers, giving a more generous interpretation of what is permissable.–

The price of a taxi plate (vehicle license) in Toronto has gone from over $300K back down to about $100K. Very few drivers own their plates.
