  1. The only reason I ever visit newspaper websites is because I can comment on their stories. I guess I’ll have to go back to vandalizing copies left at the local Tim Hortons.

  2. And then Mallick implies that a woman using her real name as her Twitter account name of being an anonymous troll while not bothering to try to see who Kate is either.

  3. A lot of newspapers seem to be doing this.
I think it’s a mistake. One of the things that comment sections do is keep columnists tethered to at least a semblance of reality. When even your most loyal fans won’t defend your position, you should probably re-evaluate. At a minimum the comments can bring to your attention interesting arguments both for and against the issue.

  4. Are there other issues being involved besides leftist think skins? Sun News also had discontinued comments. I thought at the time they were being flooded with Harper haters and other assorted loons.

  5. National Post requires you to log on with your Facebook logon with your real name. This has cut the number of trolls posting and vicious remarks by a huge factor. I get the Sun delivered and have wrote them to say i don’t bother reading their online site as without the comments there is no point.

  6. Did they sense that their readers were possibly turning the corner and challenging/disagreeing with most of the opinion and commentary?
Star writers write this, Star commentators write the contrary?
Maybe they realized that most of the comments were unfocused, ignorant/angry/insulting, and not contributing?
Did the writers themselves ask for this?
It must be so so so tough to see, as a privileged Star writer, not everyone agreeing with what you wrote, when all your colleagues and acquaintances in their echo chamber are fully on-board as like-thinkers.
The Star’s Catherine Porter will definitely be happy – no one can challenge her directly and immediately when she abjectly lies in her story to carry her points.

  7. In general terms, there is not much point in considering oneself to be part of an elite, or smarter than others, if the existence of an interactive medium often demonstrates the untruth of that assertion.
Hence, to preserve the self-image, commentary must be either eliminated or managed (to permit accolades and notes of agreement). Sometimes one or two mild critiques can be accepted to give an illusion of objectivity.
I don’t know why anyone reads the Toronto Star. They have been wrong about every big issue since man walked upright on the earth and even then, they insisted that it be styled person.

  8. Here is a Facebook meme title if ever there was one. You just have to find the appropriate picture –
“Nation (and provinces, and cities) go Liberal; newspaper editorial comment sections go offline.”
Funny that, hypocritical leftards. Free comments for me, but not for thee.

  9. The Toronto Star goes right into my woodstove. It burns better than the Globe and Mail, which changed to a shiny paper that burns like crap.
If you’re over 50 you probably read a newspaper. If you’re under 25 you’ll probably never read a newspaper in your life. They might be going down slowly, but they’re going down.

  10. It goes so far beyond political stories. I avoid the Star so can’t comment, but I read the suns online sports often. Comments on a Leaf or Blue Jays game would descend into the same stupid politics fight by the same 5 or 6 anonymous commenters every article. The comments section had become functionally useless.

  11. And what about people, who, for good and sufficient reasons, don’t have an Arsebook account? Great way to bias the selection for stupid comments, NP.

  12. What’s an “editor to the editor”? She must have already been into the sauce when she tweeted. When the National Post dropped discus, I wrote several letters that did not get published. I am not convinced they were even read. That’s fine. Just to balance things, I have stopped reading the Post, which has gone down hill anyway.

  13. I have seen the gust of many online comments Show up in newspaper columns the next day. Oh, oh, journos are going to have to think for themselves now. Not a good thing.

  14. Faceless person is an insult? Heather, darling. Have you looked in a mirror lately? If I had to look at that, I’d wish I was faceless.

  15. I didn’t think the papers had all that many readers left. Oops their all left. I stop reading the suns drivel the day they stopped the disqus thing. After quebecor sold it it turned hard left anyway.

  16. Investigate, they have no curiosity, I wonder why?
I commented there and they probably couldn’t keep up with just reviewing and rejecting comments.
Some slipped through and the PC narrative was getting hammered by the eloquence, truth and sheer numbers of comments that disagreed with their nonsense more often than not.

  17. Yes….a lot of newspapers are doing this including the Sun chain. They claim it is due to disrespectful posts but the truth is, newspapers HATE it when their “news” stories are torn apart by the truth which is regularly posted in the comments section. It is simply another attempt by the old media to try to regain control of information.

  18. I didn’t think the papers had all that many readers left. Oops their all left. I stop reading the suns drivel the day they stopped the disqus thing. After quebecor sold it it turned hard left anyway.

  19. The Hamilton Spectator in the 80’s had a full-time movie critic, its full-time classical music writer, its full-time theatre critic, its full-time religion, labour, court, and agriculture reporters.
They’re all gone now. And that was just for a city the size of Hamilton.
How can papers wonder why no one reads them anymore? There’s nothing there.Katelyn

  20. owned by lefties. I won’t go beyond that as there are sum in here (males) who would git their pink panties in a bunch.

  21. Drat!! We missed our regular dose of venom from NME666 letting us know how and why the Jews control the media and are slowly poisoning us into submission.

  22. LindaL…..ditto. I was regular reader and commenter on NP. facebook is a non-starter for me. the NP is off my list.

  23. Letters to the editor are a waste of time.
There is no guarantee they will be published and, even if they are, there is also no guarantee they won’t be edited, either to save space or censor content.

  24. why anyone would even contemplate reading the utter garbage that constitutes an “article’ in the Topronto Star is quite beyond me…yet I do admit going there once or possibly twice to make my thoughts known…and for sure it was not in favour of said article.
I agree that its a real shame that NP closed Discus….guess they just “Cant Handle the Truth”. I still post using my real name w/FB…when there is something worthy of it. There are times ya just gotta stand up and be counted. In those cases, hiding behind a pseudonym is in my mind, a gutless wankers act.
We are witnessing the total eradication of anything that smacks of Conservatism in this world through outright Propaganda spewed by the Media, by pure misinformation/outright LIES spewed by Politicians along with the ongoing continual throttling of Free speech via Political Correctness. Truth is DEAD.
There is an agenda here and I believe that the Muslim Brotherhood is behind it all….they have had plenty of time to plan and implement their “PROJECT” which is to undermine Western Civilizations from WITHIN.
They’ve been around since 1928 folks. After the war, In 1952 that group was invited into the White House. The thinking was, “here is group that hates Communism”….yea..uhuh. (and Western Civilization too.) Think about it….when did this swing to the left / progressiveness / marxism begin in earnest…?? It wasn’t last year nor the past decade either…
We are in a War for our very survival that has been going on since the end of WWII and very few see it….all completely submerged in a Matrix like Progressive, Multi-Cult, Gender Neutral, Celebrity Fawning, Selfie Taking dumbed down existence.
F*** ing sad is the first thing I can say – lock n load is the second.
Welcome to the Dark Ages Redux.

  25. Comments on a Leaf or Blue Jays game would descend into the same stupid politics fight by the same 5 or 6 anonymous commenters every article.
Isn’t that the job of leftist activist agitators? If you can’t tongue bathe your team or demonize non-leftists, turn the whole conversation to shit so that people get disgusted and turn away.

  26. Toronto Star, last time i saw one of those his name was Tim Horton, but a newspaper, ahh NO
