The “great lesson” here is actually something different. I’ve spent the last several weeks re-reporting aspects of Nir’s story and interviewing her sources. Not only did Nir’s coverage broadly mischaracterize the nail salon industry, several of the men and women she spoke with say she misquoted or misrepresented them. In some cases, she interviewed sources without translators despite their poor English skills. When her sources’ testimonies ran counter to her narrative, she omitted them altogether.
The second article lent the Times’ imprimatur to unproven theories, while committing science journalism’s cardinal sin of highlighting alarmist anecdotes that aren’t representative of systematic research.
If it hadn’t had real-world consequences, the series–and subsequent attempt by Nir and her editors to parry criticism–wouldn’t be worth such intense scrutiny. But the day after the first article appeared in the print edition of the Times, Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D-NY) announced a new multi-agency task force to inspect nail salons. In August, Cuomo issued an emergency order mandating that salons purchase a new form of insurance called a “wage bond” so that if owners are discovered paying their employees less than the legally required wage, the workers have recourse to collect.
The rush to legislate based solely on the Times’ shoddy reporting has hurt the industry
You don’t say.

“The rush to legislate based solely on the Times’ shoddy reporting has hurt the industry.”
Unlikely. More probable, a wish to hurt the industry and steal their money resulted in a shockingly bad story being run in the Times.
The cart pulls the horse these days.
Sez the late president Reagan:
Government’s view of the economy could be summed up in a few short phrases: If it moves, tax it. If it keeps moving, regulate it. And if it stops moving, subsidize it.
There are few politicians that can resist the corrupting influence of taxes.
‘The second article lent the Times’ imprimatur to unproven theories, while committing science journalism’s cardinal sin of highlighting alarmist anecdotes that aren’t representative of systematic research.”
If it wasn’t for bullsh*t and outright lying, they wouldn’t have anything to put in their paper.
Are the socialist state knows no bounds to their interfering and controlling of peoples’ lives. In the name of pretoecting people, they simultaneously grab your cash and reduce employment.
I suggest a multi-industry body to inspect government agencies.
Yesterday there was a report on how many times Toronto police have ran red-light cameras in the past year. The answer was 61. That’s 61 times for the police force of Canada’s largest city where police cruisers log millions of km’s between them every year. Now I understand the argument that police under normal driving circumstances must uphold traffic laws – and I agree that there’s maybe some abuse that goes on with police using their lights and noise making equipment to get through traffic for no other reason except they can. But those 61 red-light runs were all recorded as infractions with fines levied and there are plenty of instances each day in a city the size of Toronto for police cruisers responding to a call to justifiably break traffic laws.
There’s no story – but the shrilling reporter was bound and determined to create one while at the same time giving the police an undeserved lash across the back. Shameful reporting is the norm.
The New York Slimes and All The Sludges Thats Fit to Print I mean this news rag is nothing but a leftists propeganda paper only worth lining a birds cage with a total waste to buy this leftists rag
As per Phantom I would say that its a great example of how the media works hand in glove with the left.
The “report” was done to set up the legislation. Just as the media is driving the climate agenda for the left.
So, nail shops are legit? I always though that they were fronts for prostitution. Who knew?

That’s okay, they were probably read, or typing, on their computer at the time. They’ve been ‘trained’ to do that…:-) They obviously stopped at all the lights without cameras…as well as stop signs…if they didn’t, the aforementioned applies.

Obviously, or they would have ticketed themselves…
Just wait for the deluge of puff pieces selling canadians on the ethical glory of the UN.
Then on “fighting Climate Change” what ever that means.
And then endless rants about why canadians do not need guns.
I agree the agenda drives the “reporting”.
Another word that brings to mind the Princess Bride.
Funny how these progressives refine the common language, then complain no one listens to them.
After these self styled Social Justice Warriors finish massaging each others ego, reality will eat them.
The media cracks me up, once they wear their urge to manipulate us on their vests, they seem surprised that no one is listening.
Just like these SJW monkeys, they shriek and scream and throw their shit.. then claim they have won the argument.
Naturally they are going to be very hurt when the saner folk finally lose patience.
Becuase of leftists journalists like Walter Duranty and Herb Mathews americans never ever learned about the crimes commited by Joe Stalin and Fidel Castro and thats why FDR often called Stalin Uncle Joe and why Obama has opened up relations with Castro despite his crimes but theres very little diffrence between Obama and Castro
But there is a pattern here. Governments enact legislation and regulation based on the use of carbon based on false, exaggerated and mis-leading reports, studies and the MSM. Nothing new here.
