“I have a very dear friend, recently widowed, who is Muslim. While she does not wear a niqab, she does wear the hijab while in public. She began this practice while in university, when a real interest in faith took hold of her. This was not something ever forced upon her by her father, husband or culture. For her, it is a sign of respect for God, in the same way that I sometimes wear a cross and many other Christians have many other practices. When she speaks of Jesus and his Mother Mary, as we often do when we’re together and discussing the differences and similarities between our religions (our faith is much the same), she does so with far greater respect than almost every other Christian that I know. I would never presume to know the reasons behind why a person, any person, dresses in a particular way without getting to know them first. While I would not want to be encumbered by this kind of head covering every day, I admire the conviction of this woman’s respect. In a country where women fought, not so long ago, for the right to go topless, I find this far less offensive. And if it hadn’t happened during an election campaign and been used, unsuccessfully I hope, to trigger knee-jerk reactions among voters, it may not have even made the headlines.”

The wife had no issue with removing the niqab for the ceremony, and did so while her Ahole husband ranted in another room. Yes, she’s complicit, but that beats getting the sh+t kicked out of you or worse, since she lives with the guy and has kids.
What was not mentioned was whether the husband was a citizen or taking the oath at the same time. Him I would deny and and send him back. I’m sure she can do better here without him, although she may need a “witness protection program” to be safe, and a 24 hr guard to prevent him or his friends from stealing the children.

They are entirely human. Human beings are perfectly capable of turning out like that. It’s a matter of conditioning by culture, education, religious instruction, peer pressure. It would take a couple generations in the old Canada to assimilate immigrants from cultures that different, but now encouraging assimilation is politically incorrect and we make no effort to change them. We don’t even try much to maintain our own ways, let alone discourage theirs.
