  1. Sorry, off-topic again.
Brian Lilley guest-hosting Mark Sutcliffe’s Chatroom 09:10 am eastern at cfra.com
    Topic- Rogue poll?

  2. The people of gaspe gave us Mulroney – so seen what their best and brightest can produce.

  3. Fun times ahead when Premier Notley announces a 10 billion deficit and declares Alberta a have-not province.

  4. Yes, Alberta is cruising toward a 10 billion deficit. Prentice had a $ 5.5 billion deficit and the retard, Notley, reversed his spending cuts and tax increases. How can Notley expect to run a cratering economy with the uncertainty of not having a budget until 8 months after it was due. All so as to not scare Angry Tom Mulcair’s supporters in the federal election. The NDP truly are evil. Then the sources of revenue from income taxes and oil disappeared. Hard times on the way for Quebec with no Alberta money. Whose fault will that be? Harpers?

  5. Having sat at the kids table forever, the NDP will soon come to realize that things aren’t as easy as they think. There is no money tree Rachel and Tom.

  6. “Then the sources of revenue from income taxes and oil disappeared”
Hmm! do you think OIL production is at MAX… Just reduce the choke & more oil pumps out…The reduced price will increase demand going forward….Good time to buy oil….

  7. Slightly off topic, but I notice the link has “ici” in it. Correct me if I’m wrong but didn’t the CBC back away a few years back re-branding the French arm of the CBC so that “Canada” was removed? Wasn’t there a public backlash of sorts that forced CBC prez Hubie to back away? What happened and how did they slip that in without notice?

  8. As far as Notley, Wynne and Mulcair go, I am always reminded of Freidrich von Hayek’s old line: “If socialists understood anything about economics, they would no longer be socialists.”

  9. Occam:
Mulroney? Gaspe? Go look at a map. That’s like saying the Mayor of Vancouver is a product of Vancouver Island.
And please understand that the good folks of Vancouver Island would have no part of Mayor Robertson the loony leftie and his stupid bicycles.

  10. It would appear that the people of Gaspe have a half-assed understanding of economics.

  11. “Mulroney? Gaspe? Go look at a map.”
    Yes.
To get to the Gaspésie from Baie-Comeau takes a minimum of six hours – and that’s if you are lucky enough to catch the ferry in time for the three-hour trip across the St Lawrence.
As your comment suggests, it’s like driving from, say, Campbell River to Vancouver.

  12. Meanwhile the pipeline is blocked. They should have promised that the equalization cheques would have been put in bottles and send with the oil flow

  13. “Isn’t the NDP theme song Dire Straits “Money for nothin’ and your chicks for free”?”
I thought that was the Clinton family motto.

  14. Opportunity cost? What’s opportunity cost? Totally indifferent/blind to the cascading net negative economic effects of taxing Canadians presently, or in the future with deficit/debt spending. When governments continue to institutionalize more and more activity, from health care to pick up games, how can anyone credibly claim it won’t cause permanent deficits as the process continues? They can’t. Instead – increasing coercion, confiscation, regulation and outright interference in Canadians’ lives, to inevitable economic decline & ruin with the problem prescribed as the cure, the screw turned tighter and tigher.
I think the China collapse, which has been coming on for a long time, has illustrated two things. Canada, especially as a trading nation, has no control over these types of events, so no it’s not Harper’s “fault.” Also, it shows, along with the Greeks’ experience and current economic temper tantum, the dangers of fusing business and government and entitlement economics. Limited government/taxation is acceptable, but only to truly enable economic and personal liberty. But measures to deal with daily crises must be measured and temporary only. Permanent crises like Trudeau’s and Paul Martin’s everything is a priority are recipes for declines in our standard living.
OTOH the NDP want to interfere even more in our daily lives along with economy crunching tax increases and blockage of all resource sector output (Mike Campbell says he heard 1.2 million jobs there, so what Mulcair will only knock out half to 3/4 of them, so like only 750,000 jobs, good jobs, lost).
And national day care to help the same people they say are the “15% of the richest Canadians” under Harper’s plans. Because of the AB debacle I am forced to ask this blunt question. Are the voters, the ones who will vote, that misguided, low information, even stupid, as to think we need to go with socialists, with their hostility to business and elitism, and think it will turn out better for they, their families & standards of living?
My friend and I talk about this stuff out loud now, so people can hear us. I’m tired of the one way conversation in the media, this is how I cope. I can tell some of them just hate to hear it, they’d rather think ABH, as if any fool can make them all feel better. It’s bordering on lunacy. Remember, we bought this climate change hoax hook, line & sinker; Mulcair proposes to do it all again via Paris accords, aka free stuff for governments, then to save the world with our compliance and “leadership,” start anew all energy exploitation environmental reviews. Now the Northern Gateway has been approved, is he OK with proceeding? What do you think?
Hint: Reagan on types like Trudeau and especially Mulcair, aka elites who think they know better what’s good for you: ” it if moves, tax it, if it keeps moving, regulate it, if it stops moving, subsidize it.”
It’s time to call this guy. Don’t wait until after Labour Day lest his meme filled false narrative gains momentum, especially in Lotus Land. He’s not being upfront with the Canadian people and it’s time he explain how he plans to proceed instead of making invalid pontifications about being a Thatcher moderate.
Harper’s the Thatcher moderate, not him. No not by a long shot. He’s hoping his smoke & mirrors approach can skate him to the win; it worked for Obama, he thinks he can do it here. Trudeau’s letting him with his years of deficits comment, and Harper is now keeping the gloves off; it’s time for a political bitch slap.
Think in terms of Trump but as an experienced and informed incumbent, a successful PM, with disappointment in his performance driven by sheer partisanship and political delusion. Screw the Ottawa/Toronto/Montreal media too, they all hate you anyway. Shake them off, like Trump does.

  15. So Last Gaspe for socialist economics?
    Is there an English version?
    this upgraded Captcha sucks.

  16. Scar – which tax increases did Notley reverse? She cancelled the upcoming health tax, but all the ones in place before the elcetion (booze, gas, ciggies) are still there.

  17. Likely the practice of people who believe the NDP have a great economic platform; the remarks on Twitter that follow the tweet give some indication that’s the case.

  18. BCer, regarding your comment to Occam, do you actually live in BC? The residents of Vancouver Island are among the most politically naive and ignorant voters in the country. Taken a look at the Victoria and Saanich mayors lately? Recall who elected Elizabeth May? Ever seen a man in the street interview by the local TV station? Moonbeam Robertson would be coronated on Vancouver Island provided he ran as NDP or Green.

  19. I disagree,Bc’er, the ‘good folks’ on Vancouver Island would probably vote Mayor Robertson Governor of the Island if such a position existed.
Victoria votes NDP or Green,Nanaimo is NDP, only CPC MP is John Duncan from North.

  20. Sadly Jim303 and Don Morris are right regarding Van. Island voting proclivities. I live mid-island and have been door knocking on behalf of our Conservative candidate. It has not been encouraging.
The level of political insight and understanding is abysmally low amongst voters, even in the more conservative areas of the city. Prior to this election, the more prosperous north end elected a Conservative for several terms – a combination of better education and income as well as a sizeable rural area that appreciated a less interfering government. The south end is pretty much NDP with a religious ferocity in their hatred of Harper. You can’t go to a civic summer event without seeing people wearing ‘Heave Harper’ buttons and often kiosks with anti-Harper literature.
Now the whole riding is up for grabs so it will be very interesting. Nonetheless, too many doors I’ve knocked on have resulted in a mindless and inarticulate dislike of Harper and that unfortunately reflects upon really solid candidates.
Overall, the Island is NDP territory with a smattering of ridings that may go Conservative. The Liberals are not even a factor.
Finishing on a bright note however, the Green Party’s Paul Manley (son of former NDP MP Jim Manley, who was jailed by the Israelis for being part of a Gaza flotilla) seems to be making an impression locally. With any luck, he’ll split the vote with the commie running for the NDP and allow my guy to triumph!
Living in paradise has it’s down side, but fortunately it’s only every four years.

  21. my my aren’t we are the stickler for geographical integrity. If you don’t think “stupid” is a cultural phenomena which can spread across as small gap of QC real estate in an election cycle then you really ain’t from BC – happens there all the time.
Latest example was Alberta. It took 4 generations, but “stupid” spread throughout the province in a heatbeat.

  22. Perfect!! Alberta can send our next equalization payment to Quebec all in Gaspe Tens!

  23. And forget about Victoria, its the area of rentseekers and retired gubmint employees as well as present gubmint employees. Non-thinking Luddites, who let the union an NDP thing for them, aside from the nuttery of Lizard May in Saanich/Oak Bay.
Despite the high literacy rate and high education level of the average voter here, they define LIV.
The fawning over Lizard May here is stupefying, for such a reprehensible wretch.
The CPC candidate in the West Shore lost by 400 votes last time, as the current candidate asserts, but, the boudaries have changed, so we shall see if the current MP, the POOFTA, is retained. He’s another waste of skin, solely focused on promoting rainbows everywhere.

  24. “Perfect!! Alberta can send our next equalization payment to Quebec all in Gaspe Tens”
One small problem. There ain’t gonna be any AB equalization after one year of NOTly. How to destroy a country in one easy step, NDPeewise.

  25. “Latest example was Alberta. It took 4 generations, but ‘stupid’ spread throughout the province in a heatbeat.”
Four generations ago Alberta had only just become a province and that because a prime minister from Québec – Sir Wilfrid Laurier no less – was behind the Dominion legislation that enabled its creation.

  26. Both Notley and whoever forms the next Canadian government will have to deal with a world oil price 70% lower than it was a year ago.
Can’t blame Notley or Harper for the price of oil, since neither one of them have any control over it.
What’s more scandalous is Alberta’s minister of employment heading off to B.C. to support an NDP candidate who’s an active organizer of anti-pipeline demonstrations.
That kind of hypocricy, not the price of oil, will eventually sink the Alberta NDP.

  27. On the topic of economics, I was down town today at the embassy to get my us work visa, I had literally any pay parking lot to choose from, street parking little to no traffic, empty buses and c-train at least the one that drove by me. There was 1-3 cars at any given red light and maybe a small handful between 1-10 people crossing a few streets . Cowtown is a ghost town. I bet it has slightly less than half of the people there right now and this was at about 8:50am I only noticed because I have been down town before during the day and I hated it because it was jam packed everywhere no parking anywhere and traffic jams all over. It’s tough man and only going to get worse. !!

  28. Paul in Calgary >
I think it’s been great, finally some breathing room in Calgary but still too packed with squatters for me. The #2 is still ridiculously busy, we need a sustained recession to send more packing.
I do like to take my afternoon walks around the downtown +15 without skirting mobs.
Hopefully we’ll get a chance to cut the Quebec deadbeats out of Equalization Payments soon.

  29. Jim303 et al:
Read what I wrote. I said “the good folks of Vancouver Island …..” which precludes anyone following or voting in support of the looney left. It’s bad enough living among these fools without being mocked as one of them.
    217Regards – BCer

  30. i understand night and i truly wish it was all the lefty out of towner socialist parasites that were missing unfortunately its a mixed bag.
And wow its been hollowed out quit a bit man like i have (i moved here in 2001) NEVER seen it like this not even in 2008-2009…..

  31. Nisku is a ghost town, too. That’s the oilfield-supply town, for those of you not from Alberta.

  32. Further to “set you free”‘s comment, it wasn’t the NDP or all those lefties that brought Alberta down.*
It was this: Oil US$42.56** a barrel (National Post, 28 August 2015).
    * This should not be taken as a gesture of my support for the NDP. Far from it; they’re just the folks to make things worse.
** Though I do note that the price is up US$3.96 today. Let’s hope that’s a trend.

  33. Paul in Calgary >
Notice that the last thing the government is doing, is sending the 100,000 “Temporary” Foreign Workers home that they flooded the province with.
Never was about bolstering the economy, was all about filling the 1st world with 3rd world as per UN Agenda 21.
We need a major recession to correct the bubbles and reorganize the provinces labor forces.

  34. Well, I can certainly understand you being cranky.
Perhaps a few Albertans here have woken up to realize that they are no more special or clever than any other Canadians, that they have been favoured only by their geology, and that their one-industry boom times have been laid low by the simple market forces of the price of a mere barrel of oil.
I have every confidence that Alberta will overcome its present woes.
But a little less hubris and a little more pragmatism might go a long way in future.

  35. If any other commodity took a. 60 % drop in price like oil and gas the ROC would be screaming for a made in canada price like milk and eggs
The extraction of oil sands took billions of $ experiments first and billions stepping up to a commercial process. If we were blessed with geology it would be deeper and un breached like Saudi
I used to say oil was only found where there is bad weather bad landscape or bad government
Looks like we now have all three

  36. JJM >
“Well, I can certainly understand you being cranky”
I’m not cranky, why would you think that?
I’m on SDA record well before the 2015 Alberta election stating that I would approve of an NDP win so that they could demolish the ridiculously “Hot” Alberta economy for awhile.
Go ahead, check out the SDA Archives for election coverage, I’m on record there.
They’ll chop it down it in Aces & Spades, I’ll get some good deals on property and some business, we will send allot of immigrated freeloaders packing aaand stop the equalization payments to Quebec.
Once it’s all straitened out the Albertans remaining will toss out the commies for another 50 years. Win Win.
BTW – I’m in the Oilfield industry and personally doing just fine, I truly am enjoying the peace and quite around the Calgary hub. Just waiting on some NDP fire sales.
