  1. If the Greens really want to make their mark then they should be pushing for every hockey arena to be powered by wind and solar generated electricity. No backup generators allowed. Let’s see how that goes over with the public.

  3. Those 18 turbines will produce an average of about 86.5 Megawatt-hours (MWh) in one day. A single nuclear plant of 1000 MW plus its mining requirement will cover a small fraction of that area and produce 19,200 MWh on average in one day, more than 200 times as much electricity. Just as a quick visual, the difference in electricity is roughly the difference between a bathtub and a swimming pool. And all that for a fraction of the land use.

  9. I was amazed by this photo. I was in Pincher Creek, Alberta last week, near Cowley Ridge. . They have 100s of wind generators in that area, one of the windiest places in Canada. My car (new Ford Fusion) was idling while I was taking a photo of one of the turbines that was located about a half a mile from where the video I’ve enclosed was shot. I was about 30 meters from the blades of the turbine, the car’s engine drowned out the slight noise the blades made. I would guess that the wind was about 30 MPH, a calm day in that area. There were no dead birds around the tower–I think that’s all BS anyway.
    Are they practical?? I think if the units were mass produced here in Canada, the price could be reduced greatly. Most are imported, many of the models near Pincher and Cowley are German made by Nordex. Others are made in Norway! . The turbines could alleviate coal fired plants somewhat, however they still require backup on calm days and nights. The answer of course is the perfect battery storage system.
    I think they are greatly overpriced. And I must say however that there is something romantic about a turbine slowly swishing in the west Alberta wind, high above ” the fruited plains.”

  11. I am not sure if this was posted here, but on the hottest day in July in Ontario the power supplied was broken down as follows. …49% nuclear….24% hydro….22% gas….4% wind….0.3% solar…. Ontario is building massive solar farms around the Kingston Ontario region and it is a huge waste of time, land, money and fossil fuel resources. There is a ridge full of wind mills similar to the one in the photo in PA also one in New Brunswick.

  13. Plainsfyre, Canada is too small a market to ever be competitive with German production costs. We would have to develop a large export market which is already locked up. Second, we will never match German production costs, given that the German industry got its start from having its original production facilities at a large discount with the liquidation of former East German state corporations.
    Finally, there is not and will not be a “perfect battery storage system”. All of the electromotive series have all been discovered, and there will be no new ones. What we have now is all there is or will be.
    And yes, the bird kill stories are true. Millions in fines and penalties have been levied against the operators.

  14. Ontario is well on it’s way to becoming a weed,wind and solar eyesore and fiscal disaster the likes of which we could never imagine. Wynnemill Millie and her gang are presiding over the worst all around mess in the history of the province of Ontario and perhaps the entire country. There’s just nothing in the country to compare it to and Wynne has the gall to stick herself into the federal election campaign supporting the one person she thinks she can manipulate, Justin Trudeau.

  15. Okay, serious question (although stated in a somewhat dorky fashion).
    The Dutch have been making windmills to drain the swamp at the mouth of the Rhine river for six centuries. Those ones don’t kill birds, right? Because they move slowly, right?
    Why can’t non-bird-killing windmills like (modernized versions of) those ones – instead of those ugly white towers that look like they’re invading Earth from the planet Zontar – be used to make electricity?

  20. Good question. If wind turbines were rotating that slowly they would not be able to generate any significant quantity of electricity.
