Drowning in the polluted river of unintended consequences and in the end they’ll need more studies, regulations, white Tahoes, green fluorescent gortex outerwear, helmets, training, instructors, inspectors, operators, technicians, scientists, manuals, oversite committees, regional and district offices trailers, sniffer dogs, consultants, pubic relations spokespeople, community, steak holders, acts, photocopiers,helicopters drones, kayaks, secchi disks…. Greece!

The EPA is immune from any type of prosecution but I’m willing to bet the mining company which was shut down in 2005 when the EPA pulled their permit will now face entirely new regulations on their containment systems, even though they met all standards. They just never considered the idiot factor. The EPA is more likely to celebrate the possibility of putting the mine out of business entirely since their hatred for anything that might create jobs is well known. Their wet dreams seem to be free of coal mines, lead mines, gold mines,any mines, fracking and generally all fossil fuels. Obama has given them more power to eliminate CO2 wherever they may find it. They strongly believe it’s a pollutant. It’s a self contained insane asylum with government authority to play god. People with those kind of power trips would never worry about a little mishap in the name of making sure that containment dyke was safe. In their opinion the proof that it wasn’t is in the yellow water. That’s how it works when you’re omnipotent. OOh look, here comes someone from the EPA and he’s here to help, said no one….ever.

  7. The real mess here is the money the EPA has spent on lawyers these many years instead of actual ‘cleanups’ of contaminated sites.

  10. That looks like the harbor at Rio de Janeiro, where the swimming portion of the Olympic triathlon will be held. I saw an interview of some triathletes swimming in Rio’s harbor. They said the water “wasn’t that bad,” and that they had swam in a lot worse. Ugh. Don’cha just hate having to floss after swimming?

  15. I have been in Poland, Hungary, Ukraine, and Russia. In many ways Russia and Ukraine are many decades behind us economically. Poland and Hungary are better, but you can see the decades of communist rule everywhere you look. Most of their work places would be shut down here.

  19. Depends did the EPA hire a contractor to do the work and was the contractor doing what they were told to do? Did the contractor or anyone overseeing the project have a background as a mining engineer? It’s quite possible that they hired a company to do the work that has never worked on a mine project and the people overseeing it had no experience. In which case that is gross negligence on the part of the EPA project manager.
