  3. I see that Wendy R. Sherman was the American chief negotiator. Sherman was trained as a social worker. According to Wikipedia, “she was instrumental in negotiations related to North Korea’s nuclear weapon and ballistic missile programs.”

    This would contradict what one SDA commenter stated on July 31. “…how the IAEA works. For its audits to function, it must have access to proprietary items which no nation will ever release to the world at large. They release these things only to the IAEA under conditions of absolute confidentiality. Its agreements are bilateral only. The two of you may not like it, but don’t waste my time telling me how the IAEA works. You are entirely entitled to your views as to how it should work, but that’s another matter entirely. Fact is, Sherman should not have seen any details of the IAEA-Iran agreement. Such things name names, specific locations within sites, inventories and their natures, and processes. If she has done so, it would constitute a breach of the IAEA’s commitment to confidentiality.”
    I trust the foregoing opinions were presented in good faith, but clarity is needed as to what information Kerry and company should have been aware of.

  8. Schumer will vote against the deal to save his political bacon, but whip the Dems to vote in favour. The deal will pass, because the Repubs in the Senate engineered the terms of approval to require a supermajority to defeat it, unlike a treaty that requires a supermajority to pass.

  9. Gotta love the NYT. The tag under the photo states that Schumer “will oppose President Obama’s deal to LIMIT Iran’s nuclear program.” (emphasis added) I thought the problem was that this deal will ALLOW Iran’s nuclear program to continue to develop. Despite all the information pointing to this deal allowing Iran to gain nuclear weapons, the massive demonstrations, Iran’s own reactions, and the admissions of US diplomats not knowing all that is in the deal, the NYT is still stating that this deal will “limit Iran’s nuclear program”???? So Obama is the peacekeeper, and anyone who dares oppose The One is opposed to limiting Iran’s nuclear ambitions? Even as Obama’s ship goes down, his media peons are still madly backpaddling to try to salvage him.
    Do they even believe this stuff?

  14. The following excerpt from the article explains Senator Schumer’s thoughts after much research and deliberations:
    “Besides individual meetings with Mr. Obama, Ms. Sherman and Secretary of State John Kerry, Mr. Schumer had three hourlong meetings with members of the negotiating team during which he received answers to 14 pages’ worth of questions on the agreement.
    Ultimately, Mr. Schumer wrote his statement on his decision alone in his Senate office with a pen and yellow legal pad.
    “I examined this deal in three parts: nuclear restrictions on Iran in the first 10 years, nuclear restrictions on Iran after 10 years, and nonnuclear components and consequences of a deal,” he wrote. “In each case I have asked: Are we better off with the agreement or without it?”
    Mr. Schumer said that the inspection regime in the first 10 years of the agreement would be too weak, and that provisions to reimpose sanctions if Iran cheated were too onerous. He said his most serious concerns were with the freedom that Iran would have after 10 years to quickly build a nuclear weapon.
    “To me, after 10 years, if Iran is the same nation as it is today, we will be worse off with this agreement than without it,” he said.”

    The reality is that the rejecting the deal, in the USA, does not change Iran’s commitments to the UN….They have everything at risk & the EU has already inked business deals. We just add another dimension to the dynamics.

    Yep, kabuki theatre. Ace of Spades calls it “failure theatre”. And on the Republican side, the Senators invert the two-thirds majority thereby ensuring passage of the bill months ago and now they can rail against how terrible the deal is and vote against it even though their previous vote guaranteed it will pass.
    Farce.
