I am a bit puzzled that voter eligibility is determined by the duration a citizen is out of the country, rather than what (to me) seems a better qualifier: whether the person has paid Canadian income tax during their absence.
Sutherland is certainly just another Hollywood Hypocrite of the highest order, but in the interests of simple fairness, that by itself shouldn’t be grounds for disqualification either; lord knows that phony dickheads are well represented on both ends of the political spectrum.
However, the law is on the books, apparently brought in by a Conservative government. But having said that, the Liberals had years to change things when they were in power, and I don’t recall the NDP ever re-visiting the issue post-Mulroney.

The comment on the non paying of income tax certainly has merit. After all the tax paying citizen is so often directedly affected by the standing government in his/her pocket. Donald could not care less about our taxes.
Reminds me of when Sir Sean Connery urged Scots to vote to separate from the UK. It drew indignation when it was learned Sir Sean re-located to avoid paying income tax. The average Sandy has to make up the shortfall.
To digress, I saw television with Don Martin showing a Nanos poll. 66% want change it claimed and 24% did not want it. I sense a beating of the drums. Change, change and more change.
As in the American election the calls for change do not seem to articulate too well. This is exactly what sort of change?

I agree with this law. IF you are living abroad for a period of time then you shouldn’t be allowed to vote and influence policy that will affect those of us who live here. If he moves back by all means vote.
Further if he has cut all ties with Canada as per CRA guidelines he pays no taxes here. I have no idea of his tax situation but someone who does not have to help foot the bill should not be able help decide how much I will be taxed and, what my taxes will be spent on.

The upcoming election is going to bring a lot of topics like this out and since some of you have already stated that taxpaying should be a requirement of franchise then I’d like to open a discussion here. Governments are formed by societies to bring order to those societies, I’d state that as a given. Once formed a governments function is to protect, preserve, and propagate the society that gave it authority. That being the case only contributing members of the society should be allowed to grant the authority to govern. If you abdicate your contribution then you should loose your franchise. As a taxpayer for over fifty years I’d like to know why my vote is cancelled by some felon in Kingston, or some ex-pat that hasn’t lived here for ten to twenty-five years, or why I don’t have a right to dictate to the government where I want my taxes directed. I have to leave it there as I’m starting to get of a rant!!!!

All citizens should be able to vote in federal elections, regardless of domicile. No need to create two classes of citizens.
Much more important would be to require federal politicians to only hold Canadian citizenship. Not to mention to disallow criminals to vote.

The legislation doesn’t create two classes, they already exist: “real citizens” and “citizens of convenience”.
The legislation tries to ensure that millions of passport-holding dip-shits who have no real interest in the country can’t influence elections at the Federal and Provincial level. If they wish to buy their way into elections they need to do so at the Municipal level.

Go for it, Mr. S. I really think you should be allowed to vote in the upcoming federal election – with one proviso. Before you get to cast your ballot, you have to prove you have filed T1’s for the last few years – five or so – and have actually paid Canadian taxes. Because, sir, I don’t want an elitist expat with no skin in the game deciding how the government spends my hard-earned money. No tickee – no laundry. Very simple.

This falls into the same category as people like Brigitte Bardot or Nancy Sinatra who arrive here from the France or the USA as activists against seal hunting and pipeline construction.
