The CO2 reductions just keep on coming;
About 65 employees at Baldor Electric in Stratford have learned that they will lose their jobs as the company phases out manufacturing here over the remainder of this year and early into next.
Exact dates have not been established for the closure of the facility, which began manufacturing motors at 677 Erie St. in the city under the name Reliance Electric in the 1950s.[…]
Stratford and District Chamber of Commerce general manager Garry Lobsinger called the news sad.
“They’re Chamber members and have been for a long time, and it’s just another one of our manufacturing sector people who are gone,” he said. “They’ve been good supporters of ours over the years and we’re sorry to see them go.”
Lobsinger suspected that energy costs in Ontario factored into the decision.

Those who have never run a business have nary a clue as to how input costs effect the business. Wynn and Notley etc think that business is just a bag of money that you can dip into anytime you want never understanding that things like the cost of energy or wages make the business profitable or unprofitable. When the input costs get too high the business either closes up of moves away.
Sacrificing in the new religion of Enviromentalism after all the Aztecs,Incas and myans did it
If this keeps up Canada will meet its CO2 targets in no time. And after the rest of the loser provinces destroy their economies they won’t have Alberta to pay the bills because we elected a communist government and are now losers too.
At this rate we will soon have the carbon footprint of a small African village.
The Liberal’s plan, from Day 1 of McGuinty getting elected, was to unleash a decades-long program to steadily drive electricity rates up to the $0.30 per kw/h range. That’s the magic number where alternative sources like wind and solar become economically viable options. THAT’s why cheaper options like coal, gas, hydroelectric and nuclear got shuttered, cancelled and ignored. THAT’s why they signed long-term solar contracts at (then) outrageous rates, because they knew where they wanted electricity prices to be. THAT’s why they built huge windmills wherever they wanted, damn the cost and local opposition. THAT’s why they had a green energy rebate, to help hide the increases from consumers. THAT’s why they dump surplus electricity on neighbouring markets and swallow the loss, because they want the system to look stable and viable. THAT’s why businesses are leaving, because they know the subsidies and credits are about to expire, and we will soon get hit by the full cost of this plan. The Liberals have done everything necessary to ENSURE that we will be paying $0.20 – $0.30 per kw/h for electricity in this province.
Joe:
1. Property taxes
2. Corporate taxes
3. Payroll taxes
4. Personal taxes
5. Electricity rates
6. Propane / gas for heating
7. Cell phone charges
8. 407 toll charges
9. Insurance fees
During the past 15 years that I have run a business, only corporate taxes have dropped. Electricity rates, insurance and 407 charges have all more than doubled.
At one point we had a blue cross health program for our employees. But a number of the younger people wanted contract-only positions rather than be employed. They scoffed at the idea of collecting a Canada or Old Age Pension so why bother contributing through payroll taxes.
With all the part-time employment and contract work I’m surprized Wynne is trying to introduce an Ontario Pension Plan. So many of the people she is trying to help either won’t qualify or they will opt out (by not contributing as an employee). Plus the large companies have their own pension plans and shouldn’t need help from the government.
I sent the reporter Steve Rice a little note of encouragement.
“Hello Steve,
Look at the bright side. That being CO2 reductions. When the last plant closes in Ontario the province will have a fantastic CO2 level.
Reaping the fruits of the McGuinty/Wynne regime and its AGW scam policy.
Good luck to Stratford.
Regards,
Ken”
Aww come on guys they were only scummy private sector slags – they were not of the elite workforce of the public sector – to dominate we must destroy this free lance (Wild) worker – everyone must be directly reliant on the government for their income. YOU MUST BE OF THE BODY!
I’ve seen Baldor Electric motors in sawmills and other industrial plants I’ve worked in over the years, and know they’re very well made, I suspect their replacements imported from China will not have nearly as good a reputation.
and nowhere near the tax “revenue” for the gov’t of Ontario.
I don’t understnd the criticism of the Wynne government strategy concerning energy?
Did we (not me) not just give them a 5 year majority mandate?
Elections have consequences…most thinking adults understand that.
Me…I just sold my business and retired early. This government made doing business in Ontario too burdensome and has taken the fun and profits out of it. Why compete for peanuts?
Truth is I should thank the Wynne-ing Liberals. It really is a lot more fun being debt and responsibiliy free. I do feel bad about the people that used to have a job working for me…but the government will look after them if they can’t find work.
Sad time we live in here in Ontario.
Baldor motors were used everywhere here in Saskatchewan, on grain cleaners, grain elevators, water pumps etc. A sad day for Canadian Manufacturing. Get ready for cheap imported garbage with aluminum winding and bearings that give out in the middle of the night!
Factor in the ‘delivery charges’ and we’re way up there already.
It’s not just business that’s hurting (and leaving). Here is northern Ontario folks are paying 1,200-1,500$ a month in winter to heat 900-sq.ft bungalows. And the cost of electricity is slated to go up another 40% in the next 4 years (and who knows how much more after it is privatized).
I am thankful I heat with firewood, but this is not for everybody. It’s a lot of work and if you have arthritis or simply too old you can’t do it. And yet the ‘social justice’ Liberals could not care less.
