Reader Tips

Tonight, just to mix things up a bit, I decided to dub my own vocal onto the vocal-less soundtrack of an Isaac Hayes concert: here’s Shaft.
Almost indistinguishable from the original, IMO.

  1. That was over 40 years ago, and I was a very young man. I didn’t dig it then and I don’t dig it now, whether or despite it was his voice or yours. Nothing personal, you understand?

  2. The Harper Haters at CBC are making a big deal out of a trip that GG David Johnson recently undertook to the Middle East.

The CBC costs the Canadian taxpayers over 1.5 billion $$ a year. The GG’s trip to Saudi Arabia cost $175,000 Cdn. How much does it cost to keep the CBC afloat for 5 days?? The Liberals under Jean Chretien and Paul martin sent GG Adrienne Clarkson to many parts of the world. The following is an excerpt from Wikipedia.
(Jan-2005) In January 2005, disappointment was further expressed over Clarkson’s failure to attend a memorial service for Alberta’s late lieutenant governor, Lois Hole.[28][29] Rideau Hall issued a statement saying the Governor General was, at the time, abroad representing Canada at the inauguration of the President of Ukraine, Victor Yushchenko. However, the inauguration was postponed, and it was felt that Clarkson could have returned to Canada for the service. When it was later reported by the Toronto Sun and The Globe and Mail that Clarkson would wait in Paris, France, for the rescheduled presidential investiture, more outrage was expressed in the press, which was only compounded when Rideau Hall informed the public that the Governor General would also attend a “long-standing engagement” with the Queen at Sandringham House, contradicting reports that Buckingham Palace had said the dinner was actually booked at the last minute. In response, some monarchists began lobbying Clarkson to resign, had she willingly used the Queen for publicity and damage control purposes.

  3. As Arnold S. told one of his competitors at a Mr. Olympia contest, you’re fat, uh, no, FLAT.
    Heh.
No disrespect, though. Most pop singers sing flat, even the best, like you. The Beatles sang flat, too.

  4. So, in your first rendition, were those Columbus McKinnon tire chains made in St. Catharines, Ontario or Buffalo, New York?

  5. That’s amazing. You may not believe this, but — with god as my witness — Barry White was my original choice for tonight’s….umm, idee-er.
    Holy smokes.

  6. Since the big planes are now computer driven, we keep hearing how any computer can be hacked. Wonder how good the hackers are that would love to put these theories to the test ? Our reliance on computers is becoming a liability because it now dominates every aspect of our lives. Everything from banking to just in time food delivery for our urban centers and everything in between. Too many eggs in a vulnerable basket.

Yep. I’m good with that too. Just taking out the garbage. Too bad he stopped at one.

  8. On the National tonight, David Herle, a Liberal strategist was part of a panel discussing the debates.
He tells us that the Conservatives are saying ” … the debate issue doesn’t suit our partisan purposes “. He blathers on about how you don’t mess with tradition, whatever.

The other side of that coin is that the CBC/consortium debates will help his candidate.
Mr.Mansbridge should have asked him to expand on his statement. Unfortunately he did not.
Why do the Liberals so desperately want the debates to be controlled by the CBC’s consortium ?
    I think we all know.

  9. I just read that Poland elected a Conservative President Wait for the liberals start shouting NAZIS

  10. Wasn’t it Fritz Lang, and didn’t he do Woody – not Guthrie, the other one.

  11. Father Ray de Souza in today’s NP talks about Commencement Addresses and how the speaker can add his or her own message. On the same day that President Obama talked to the graduating class of National Coast Guardsmen on the threat of climate change, the Supreme Leader of Iran was telling a graduating class of military students that the West will never inspect any nuclear Site – and he threw in a shot at Saudi Arabia. Ouch!

“CANBERRA, Australia – Australia plans to pass a law within weeks to give the government power to strip citizenship from dual nationals who are suspected terrorists even if they are not convicted of a crime, the prime minister said Tuesday.”
It is time we smartened up here in Canada also.

  13. The Goreacle’s AGW fraud is manifested again.
“Vineyard owners in parts of southern Ontario are assessing the damage from a record-breaking plunge into cold weather that some growers say has devastated their grape crops.
Both Prince Edward County and the Niagara region were hit with unseasonably low temperatures over the weekend that sent farmers scrambling to prevent frost from killing their fruit.”

  14. Who’s the black private di*k
That’s a sex machine to all the chicks?
    Shaft!
    Ya damn right!
His job in the film was detective. How many knew THAT?

  15. wallyj, it never ceases to amaze me how the CBC can inject themselves into a debate where they have a clear conflict of interest, in this case criticizing the Tory debate decision, omitting any idea they could be biased on this issue, given they’re the main cog in the “consortium.”
Remember the non stop CBC auto reporting on cuts to their budget? It was top of mind news in their mind. Why do they have to slant reporting to their viewpoint? Part of the reason is the CBC entitlement mentality, another part of it is all their senior people were installed by Liberal governments and career paths of most journalists flowed through the CBC at one time or another. They are therefore far from a trusted source of information.
Being Liberals they will likely turn on the NDP soon as the Grits wither away under the leadership of the most inept politician of the last twenty years or more. OTOH they may check that in favour of theirs and their fellow travelers’ absurd, illogical and delusional hatred of all things Harper and Tory:
    Quote from: http://abearsrant.com/2013/02/hating-stephen-harper.html
“… there are a lot of bleeding hearts around who just don’t like to see people with helmets and guns. All I can say is, go on and bleed, but it is more important to keep law and order in this society than to be worried about weak-kneed people …”
Whoa! That’s pretty strong stuff and sounds like just the kind of thing Stephen Harper or most redneck conservatives might say and believe doesn’t it?
Stephen Harper and his Conservative government are on the record as being strong law and order types who have dramatically shifted the focus away from only crime prevention to tougher enforcement and stiffer penalties for criminals. They have little patience with those who are soft on crime and criminals and have made no bones about it.
But then, what can you expect from a government that is little more than a dictatorship. I was reminded again about how dictatorial Stephen Harper is when I read this comment left by a reader of an article on a news media website.
“I’m talking about the arrogant, dictatorship style of the Harper government – pandering to corporate interests while dismantling environmental protection by pushing through omnibus bills C-38, C-45 etc… I suggest you educate yourself about what is happening to Canada”
The commenter is clearly angry but what it also reveals is that she isn’t very well informed about the issues. She’s not all that well-informed about the history of her own party either, for that matter.
The opening quote at the top of the page wasn’t made by some ultra-conservative fascist, it was made by former Liberal Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau just three days before he invoked the War Measures Act. He put Canada under martial law, putting armed military troops in the streets of major Canadian cities. He suspended the civil liberties and fundamental rights of hundreds of Canadians who were arrested in their homes without warrant or proper charge and without access to legal representation.
For some reason, Liberals like Paul Martin, seemed to have forgotten that when they ran an ad accusing Stephen Harper of wanting to do what a former Liberal Prime Minster had already done.
Progressives hate Stephen Harper and it’s both personal and visceral. They talk about his controlling leadership style but quite frankly it isn’t all that different from former Liberal Prime Minister Jean Chretien’s. Liberals condemn Stephen Harper’s policies, including the ones they supported in Parliament and never quite seem willing to face the contradiction between what they said they were going to do and what they didn’t do when they were in power.”

  17. And while we are at it why don’t we respect the wishes of those who go to join the Provisional Islamic Government in Syria/Iraq and those who support them and recognize their citizenship in PIGS then relieve them of Canadian citizenship as too polluting to their refined sensibilities.
Is the proper term for a citizen of PIGS Piglets?

  18. I think the CBC has given up trying to disguize their partisanship. If Justin gets in they will be rewarded.
