In her 1970 book The Dialectic of Sex, Shulamith Firestone declared that “the end goal of feminist revolution must be… not just the elimination of male privilege but of the sex distinction itself.” Firestone called for “an end to the incest taboo, through abolition of the family,” so that “sexuality would be released from its straitjacket to eroticise our whole culture.” She flatly declared “pregnancy is barbaric,” described women as “the slave class,” and envisioned a “new society” in which “humanity could finally revert to its natural polymorphous sexuality — all forms of sexuality would be allowed and indulged.”
The fact that Shulamith Firestone was clinically insane (a paranoid schizophrenic who died alone in 2012 at age 67) might serve as sufficient rebuttal to her doctrine, but by the time her madness became evident — she was committed to a psychiatric unit in 1987 — the radical movement she helped launch had gained a solid foothold in academia, publishing, law and politics.

Conservatives turn out to be Cassandra yet again. “If the gay rights you’re talking about go through, then in 30 years paedophiles and incestuous relationships will be looking for the same cultural acceptance.” And here we are. The safest and best place for a child to be raised is in a family where they are related to both parents. Period. All other considerations are secondary. Just as no person is perfect, marriages will never be perfect. That doesn’t mean you do away with them any more than not catching all rapists or murderers means decriminalizing rape or murder.
Firestone’s book was on many graduate and undergraduate students’ shelves in the early 1970s. I suspect that many of them read it, and a goodly portion of those took it to heart. How many of them, one wonders (but dreads to know) are judges, university administrators, politicians, or upper-level bureaucrats today.
If you want to stab this “bedlamite feminism” thing in the heart, right now, go look up the Sad Puppies Campaign, then go to Sasquan which is the site of this year’s World Convention of Science Fiction (Worldcon), pay $40 and VOTE in this year’s Hugo Science Fiction awards.
This is the -only- thing I know of at the moment where Regular People are talking the fight to the Social Justice Warriors and engaging them on their own intellectual ground. And kicking their narrow @sses too, I might add.
You get a Voter’s Package with all the nominated works in it as part of your $40. I recommend -reading- them all and choosing based on quality rather than just voting the Sad Puppies slate. It will be more fun.
Better, it will be a moral victory over the SJW Forces Of Duh, who have decided that what is most important about a book is the author’s surface melanin content and/or their urinary plumbing. They vote the author blurb, not the book.
