A good friend of mine runs a business in the County. He has done so for 40 years. He showed me his electricity bill last week. In December, he spent $770 on electricity. It was one of the least expensive lines on his bill. The global adjustment charge was $4,267.32. There was also a delivery charge, a debt retirement charge and an array of taxes. In total, he spent nearly $10,000 in December–for $770 of electricity. He doesn’t know where this money is going. He is not sure he can keep up. He isn’t alone.
The global adjustment is a catch-all fee that covers the provincial government’s intervention in electricity generating market. It pays for solar generators, industrial wind turbine plants and subsidized exports to Michigan and Quebec. It covers the subsidized rates some chosen industries pay. It pays for the lawyers who battle residents and groups–including the Prince Edward County Field Naturalists–at tribunals and courtrooms across the province.

One of the comments in the article asked “how do they get away with this?…” Simple. You voted for them three times in a row. You reap what you sow.
So will the citizens take up their torches and pitchforks, or will they bend over and continue to take it?
They’ll bend over and take it, of course. There are even many bien pensants (that’s French for “Sheeple”) in Toronto who willingly sign up to PAY EVEN MORE than that for electricity that is guaranteed to be certifiably green (Bullfrog Power). Idiots. Alas, anyone with half a brain (or the ability to actually read their hydro bill) has known about this for years. Under Wynne’s grand plan to make Ontario into Canada’s engine of economic growth (yeah, it is inexplicable) electric bills will continue to grow by at least 10% a year. And that’s before they really fix things this spring with a new Carbon Tax.
We need to take control of our own borders out west. When those rat start fleeing from their sinking socialist ship – they are going to come west to relocate and they will smuggle their stupidity in with them.
Maybe this should have been filed under “Your moral and intellectual superiors.”
You know, those geniuses in Ontario are imposing those costs on Ontario citizens “for their own good.”
And we thought there was separation of church and state in Ontario. Apparently not, ’cause it depends on what is meant by “church”.
The latter. people will not act on their own because they will end up being alone, that’s why we are long on outrage, short on doing anything about it.
To have a revolution, you need Leaders. Sometimes they are not particularly nice people.
That debt was paid off long ago. And we were told it was. So whyvon every bill it is still there?
Unfortunately for Alberta a lot of liberals have moved there from Ontario to infect you people. You had the closet liberal Alison Redford there and lokk what she did.
I have empathy for the positions of the posts above on this topic…. I humbly remind ALL …
Canada is THE BEST COUNTRY ON THIS PLANET IN which to live… Kathleen Wynne’s corrupt Ontario Government and Ontario Hydro operation NOT-WITHSTANDING!
Time heals ALL!
Ok lets see what we got, $10,000 for 30 days, thats $333.00 or so per day. Now diesel is selling for approx $1.10 per litre – not sure about coloured diesel. So you could purchase 303 litres per day. I would bet you could run a large generator on a lot less.
When you pay $10,000 for $770 worth of electricity, at what point is it profitable to set up your own generation? Mind you they would make it illegal.
Separate now. Cut the cancer out.
Heck for that kind of yearly cash cost you can set up a big generator, a battery bank and some solar panels, and power your neighbors too.
The big trick is whethe the pay back is faster than this idiocy collapsing.
Some time ago I checked with the Local Electrical Provider if they were willing to provide a back up service for my own generating system and what would be the cost. The reply was yes this was possible and the stand-by cost for power would be about $45.00/month. (yep it was a while ago)
I did the calculations using natural gas as my fuel for the generator and I could make a break even except for the noise of the generator.
Since then i installed a generator for the increasing number of black outs at a cost of $6,500.00 (including add-on taxes and it serves the ten needed circuits very well. We usually never notice except for the clocks being off time from the 15 second wait time for the generator to kick in and the annual maintenance cost remains at less than $200.00.
However, although I did not check it out, which I would do if not a septuangerian, the add-ons started to mount up and figured the savings for my own permanent system would never be viable with using a normal back-up system.
I do wonder what it would be in cost if having access to natural gas and the modern generator technology now available and incorporating sound suppression technigues and avoiding the add-on charges all together by not using an utility system as a back-up. Maybe a battery support system.
However there will probably be a sign-off necessary from the municpality building department that a separate system met code and this may be difficult to get. Ce’st la vie.
Don’t bother Joe.
Even though most regulars here are of the same ideological bent, they simply cannot help themselves when it comes to lumping all Ontarians as Liberal sheep. Even though their major cities are also fully leftist and they too will soon be in the same boat.
Just because most on this blog are conservative doesn’t mean they’re any smarter. The chance to feel superior is too strong.
As I’ve often said, if it wasn’t for the downtrodden conservatives of Ontario, the smug westerners would be saying Prime Minister Ignatieff today.
The downtrodden conservatives are not to be confused with leftist’s called the Progressive Conservative Party of Ontario. That bunch couldn’t find their ass with both hands.
C’mon, do we not call it Torontariowe? We also know Ont Grits win by driving a wedge between rural and urban voters with their taxation, energy and spending policies.
It’s a known thing, so doesn’t have to be repeated over and over.
The commenters above feel free to call resides of Ontario, rats, infectious, and cancer.
All residents of Ontario, as I see no differentiation to their allies in the fight against socialism.
You should be ashamed.
Thanks for raising that point, doowleb. Millions of conservative Ontarians didn’t vote for Wynne’s Liberals, and never would vote for Wynne’s Liberals, so to tell them “it’s your fault, you voted for them” is kinda dumb. I’m not sure why people do that.
Because collectively, the Ontario electorate proves to have sh*t for brains, despite the contrary votes. For generations Saskatchewan’s electorate was collectively stupid enough to vote for socialism, despite many individuals being smart enough to vote against it.
Wynne’s liberals got in with about 37 percent of the popular vote.
FWIW I bought the house I live in 9 years ago. My first hydro bills were approx $40 a month. It’s a small house, gas heat no ac. They went as high at 110$ last year. I got a gas stove and dropped the bill to 80-90. I put LED lamps in most of my lights (too expensive to go the whole hog, I put them in the high use areas. I got the hydro bill down to 75. I can probably get it down to 70 when I get more LEDs. My gas usage hasn’t changed. I can’t get an exact number because the main driver is the weather and the weather is never the same. I suppose in the winter when the gas is going to the stove that’s less gas I need for heat. When my dryer dies I’ll get a gas one.
My power bill is still a lot higher than it was but I have managed to reduce it a lot with no discomfort. The LED lights are great and the gas stove is way better than the old electric one.
…coal
I was thinking an ATV with a portable generator and a plasma cutter would be just what’s needed to get rid of some windmills.
Don Quixote was right!
“”I’m not sure why people do that.””
same reason that some in here scream anti semite when point out that extreme lefties they keep harping about are Jewish. The fact that that is a simple fact that I am pointing out is beyond their comprehension….they are just plain STUPID!!
When you avoid being involved in politics and leave it all up to those that graduated in the Arts Faculties and concede legitimacy to the socialist / progressive notion that the state should be involved in so much of what is simply commerce, this is the result. Ontario isn’t unique other than being out front of the others in this phenomenon. The green theocracy succeeds because no one of sound mind wants to frolick in the pig pen of politics.
I spent 8 months last year working in the wind energy sector. It’s the only job I could get. They are paying massive amounts of money hiring people. Truckers, crane operators, flag holders, electricians, concrete workers, etc. The local people hate these things but you are starting to get this undercurrent of people who are depending on these projects for money. I wonder if they will start voting Liberal just to keep the money rolling.
I can get away from Wind this year but a lot of these people can’t. This is their ticket to having a car, buying a house etc.
You don’t live in Ontario, right? I doesn’t matter what we do to ‘conserve’ and use less electricity…our bills are climbing because of ‘delivery charge” (Yep those wire work hard every day), “debt reduction” and “global adjustment”.
And to doolweb, and NME and other miserable snips on here…our MPP is Vic Fedeli (PC) You can’t paint all PC’s with the same brush. Check out the electoral maps…Toronto and the unions are to blame for the Lib victory.
Progressive power generation quickly leads to a lot of insanity:
–Public buildings, including NHS hospitals, prisons, Army barracks and RAF bases, police and fire headquarters, schools and council offices equipped with emergency generators are to be asked to make them available on 20-minute standby to back-up the grid when supply is short. For this, they will be paid premium rates, soon to rise to the equivalent of £600 per Megawatt hour (MWh) of electricity produced.
This is more than 12 times the rate currently paid to ordinary power station operators, and six times the rate paid to inshore wind farm owners. Potentially, this makes Government-owed generators worth hundreds of millions to George Osborne. But it also represents another “stealth tax” on hard-pressed electricity consumers, brought about by the increasing reliance on wind power which is already heavily subsidized.–

What type of business is he running??
Dumb and dumber.
I’m sick and tired of westerners blaming all of us when great numbers of us supported the Conservatives.
I’m 86 and looking to rent a spare room from one of you sanctimonious twits.
I was wondering that. Knowing the area my guess would be a dairy farm.
Look down 4 houses to the left and then 4 houses to your right … they voted it in … not anyone on this site.
Fishing arrow tied to line, rope and chain would be easier and quicker wouldn’t it.
I live in Ontario. For years my MPP has been conservative. In the last election it went NDP. Only 37 percent of people voted for the liberals, yet they have a majority. I get that that is how our system works, but to keep parroting that we voted for them is just not accurate. I never did and neither did 63 percent of the population. Almost 2/3 of us did not vote for them.
I’ve lived in Ontario for a long time, and after watching this province vote in the corrupt, criminal libs so often, capping it off with the degenerate lesbian (degenerate not because she munches on carpets, but because she’s a lying, corrupt communist scold), I hope this province goes bankrupt to the extent that Toronto turns into Caracas, with rationed a$$wipe for all.
I applaud every time Ontario’s credit rating is downgraded. I want to see it match Haiti’s. I want all Ontarians to feel the horror and pain of modern liberalism until blood runs in the streets. I’m not a Torontonian a$$wipe and if civilisation in Ontario collapses, I’ll be the guy laughing at the starving, feral liberal voters on the other side of the barbed wire. I might even use some of them for sport.
The sooner Ontario goes bankrupt, the better. My only regret is that we are too sissified to re-enact the taking of the Bastille, with Queen’s Park standing in for Versailles. May Kathleen “I got mine” Wynne eat cake.
Ummmm….what? Your diatribe on what I assume to be about Jews is a 100% stretch to relate it to the topic that one can only assume that your tin-foil is constricting your ability to think. Either that or ESL is hindering your communication on whatever topic you wish to engage.
Good you all deserve it! You just sit on the side lines and say “what can i do?” i vote. How about protesting …..and when that doesn’t work start rioting!! everyone else does it.
non of you run for politics so enjoy the decline.
Holy shit man.. epic comment. You are not alone.
I agree with the wounded conservatives of Ontario.
It is easy to jeer from out west or up north here, but the kleptocracy will grow until they eat their own.
The City of Toronto has found a traditional way to steal from the productive citizens of Ontario, the tyranny of democracy.
As the population has become ever more concentrated in the city, the city dwellers are more than happy to vote themselves other peoples wealth.
What is blatant in Ontario is prevalent all across Canada, look to your local councils, riding associations and so on.. What do you see?
Who controls the funds?
Who picked your candidates?
Were any of them people you would want to hire?
Or work with?
Those committee speak creatures serve a purpose.. to drive away fresh input, ideas and involvement from normal citizens.. protect the status quo, long live the Kleptocracy.
Bureaucracy Rules, government by thieves for the benefit of thieves.. their definition of the “Public Interest” has none of the taxpayers interests included.
Currently politics is so distasteful that it seems only those with narcissistic personality disorders or with issues are motivated to even run.
If only fools, bandits and axe grinders stand, why would anyone be surprised by the sheer number of fools and bandits in elected office?
The parasites have extorted over half of the real return on our labour for decades, getting lazier and greedier each year.
Tanker has it exactly right.
Your civic duty; Starve the beast:
Buracracy where ever you go you encounter buracracy and idiot buricrats
They are already out “here”, sport and they vote Progressive Convertible Party, Red Tory/commie. Who do you think Redford sucked up to, days after she won? McGuinty. Prentice is “their guy” now, fresh in from being groomed for the job in Trawnna. Bye, bye Equalization.
Sucks to be us and it really sucks to be you. Enjoy the Decline. We won’t be far behind.
It must be really tough having English as a second language.
perhaps someone can actually introduce me to another conservative. I think I am the last living conservative alive. so far the conservatives govern like liberals, the liberals like liberals and the ndp like liberals. Canadians are socialists and every time something happens or requires doing, the cry arises from all, WHAT IS THE GOVERNMENT GOING TO DO ABOUT IT? look around and see what you can find that does not have the heavy hand of the government on it. there is nothing to be found because everything is approved , sanctioned, ordered by, controlled by, some bureaucratic nonsense somewhere.
And to doolweb, and NME and other miserable snips
Sorry for causing you misery.
Us cancerous viral rats will shut up.
Carry on.
Oh, don’t be bitter, PO!
My home and vehicles are paid for, I have money in the bank, and life is good!
Mind you, I am a fiscal conservative and unlike the feminists, homosexuals, Marxists and environmentalists of Morontario – I know how debt works. And yeah, the idiots out east tried to infiltrate our leadership with the last rat faced tenant of the premiere’s office…and it didn’t go well for them. Contrary to the indigenous stupid people of Alberta – the current tenant is a vast improvement over the last one.
In a more civilized era there would be a gunpowder revolt over this kind of government extortion racket. Americans fought a war of independence over less tax thievery.
People in Toronto don’t live with swindle mills and subsidy farms. Nor do they have rural delivery charges. Many live in appartments where the rent covers electricity and they do not even see a hydro bill.
This is a very sensible suggestion
Good you all deserve it! You just sit on the side lines and say “what can i do?” i vote. How about protesting …..and when that doesn’t work start rioting!! everyone else does it.
non of you run for politics so enjoy the decline.
Because the current political situation in Calgary Alberta is because of your personal involvement and public protesting I’m sure.
In my household we only mounted one political campaign last year. Lost by 197 votes out of many thousands.
Your businessman friend from Wellington may well have a hydro bill with those amounts on it.
I also pay hydro bills for a manufacturing business in Ontario.
The extra charges over the hydro use sound strange and are likely an error.
Maybe a call to Hydro customer service is in order.
There’s no way.
Merdedes Benz was forced to close its New Jersey factory becuase of stupid taxes no doupt passed by the memebers of the Stupid Jackass Party(Demacrats)liberals are such a bunch of idiots
