  8. Re: Video–Igloo!!
    Look at the film at 8:57!! In the background, you can see a wooden hut with a chimney! It was most likely equipped with a stove and a bunk bed, or it was maybe hooked up to a Caterpillar Gen-Set!!
    I wonder where they hid the Ski-Doo!!
    My Dad was a snowmobile dealer in the early 70’s. Above his desk, he had a cartoon of two Eskimos looking at a new
    machine, the caption read; ”Only one problem, we can’t eat it if we get caught in a snowstorm.”

    The Ski Doo was launched in 1959. This NFB film was released in 1959 so I doubt that one would expect to find such a snowmobile at that traders post.
    The NFB made some phenomenal artic documentary films in the fifties and sixties, well worth looking for.

  11. One item the igloo video missed was “keep the heel of the knife always pointed to the same spot in the centre of the igloo”. That ensures a consistent spiral. Yes, things the RCAF taught me in Resolute Bay have somehow lasted through the years. I do recall that it took two of us two days the build the @#$% thing though, in the meantime we used one the Inuit guides had built.
    But, but, Global Warming…

  12. I’d bet that surrounding your house with an igloo would lower your heating bill.
    And in some neighbourhoods, it would improve the view, too.
    I think a youtube video of Tommy “Abdul” Mulcair, Just in Trudeau and Elizabeth May showing Canadians how to build an igloo would make terrific campaign ads.
    The one who builds the best igloo wins. The prize is 200lbs of walrus blubber.

  15. Here in south central Iowa, it’s currently (7:10 am) -19C. The forecast low for tonight is -25.5C. I shoveled 20 cm of “global warming” off my driveway Monday (shoveling at approximately 2:00 pm, 4:00 pm, and 7:00 pm). There is no temperature in the federal government’s weather forecast through next Tuesday that is higher than -4C.
    I think that Al Gore must be visiting Iowa.

  16. Larry – I remember dad banking the snow in around the base of the house for extra insulation in the winter so we wouldn’t have to burn as much wood. It’s not a full igloo, but snow does provide great insulation.
    Trick for city slickers – snow’s insulation factor is high enough that it can keep you alive outside when it’s -40 if you burrow into it right. Your biggest risk is asphyxiation if you don’t have enough air flow around you in your snow cave (but air flow is cold, so it’s a balancing act).
