The Sound Of Settled Science

The Australian;

AUSTRALIA is lucky to possess the high-quality, 128-year-long tide gauge record from Fort Denison (Sydney Harbour), which since 1886 indicates a long-term rate of sea-level rise of 0.65mm a year, or 6.5cm a century. […]
Similarly low rates of local sea-level rise have been measured at other tide gauges along the east coast. National Tidal Centre records reveal variations between about 5cm and 16cm/century in rates of relative rise. The differences between individual tide gauges mostly represent slightly differing rates of subsidence of the land at each site, and differing time periods.
For example, measurements at Sydney between 2005 and 2014 show the tide gauge site is sinking at a rate of 0.49mm/yr, leaving just 0.16mm/yr of the overall relative rise as representing global sea-level change. Indeed, the rate of rise at Fort Denison, and globally, has been decreasing for the past 50 years.

  1. Precisely. Once harbour subsidence is taken into account, the claimed sea level rise almost completely disappears.

  2. Sea level rise of 0.16 mm per year? That’s about the thickness of a fingernail; or thick sheet of paper. Given that even a capillary wave might be a mm in height, this is negligible.
In the St. John’s NL harbour there has been no perceptible sea level rise in nearly 40 years. Harbours have plenty of structures in and out of the water by which to measure. St. John’s harbour also is quite sheltered, and the tides are not marked, so if there was a rise it should be easy to see here.
When I came to St. John’s I was promised global warming. They lied.

  3. On the west coast we just had a combination of high tides and a ‘pineapple express’ series of storms. The combination caused the pounding of breakwaters by high waves, resulting in minor damage.
It also provided an opportunity for CTV to phone up a Suzuki Foundation ‘expert’ to tell their viewers it was all a result of climate change and rising oceans – and that we should expect more of the same. His claim of significant ocean level rise is completely bogus, but it fits the meme so let’s all run with it.

  4. So when the CBC ran a recent news story about flooding in Florida and how communities were having to cope with rising sea levels they were LYING???

  5. Well figure it out for yourself yop. If they had flooding, then they had flooding. Flooding can occur in the absence of global sea level rise. Flooding can occur in response to local storm surges. Flooding can occur in response to subsidence. Flooding can occur along the Bow River three thousand feet above sea level. The opposite phenomena can also occur. The “port” of Rye in southeast England was, in Mediaeval times, one of the Cinque Ports. Now it’s fifteen miles inland. Are you going to believe that’s because of falling sea levels if some scientific illiterate on the CBC tells you so?

  6. When hurricane Katrina hit NEW ORLEANS they were predicing the next few years hurricanes would be worst becuase of this Global Warming poppycock then Hurricane Sandy and they blamed it on GLOBAL WARMING and comming from the mouths that produce 100% of the HOT AIR like AL GORE,DAVID SUZUKI,GREENPEACE,SIERRA CLUB and all those hippy wanks

  7. The oceans aren’t rising, the land is falling.
But that’s just what you’d expect given the earth started out as a molten ball of iron which has been contracting as it cools.

  8. in Vancouver is pretty easy to see how high the water was. the place called Delta used to be underwater —oh yeah , will happen again , sux to be them.

  9. “all those hippy wanks” Oh My, such keen insightful observations. Keep preaching to the choir… Testify brother Testify…
The factual comments by others such as John Lewis, cgh, and peterj are spot on.

  10. The idea that a tidal water level can be measured to within a fraction of a millimetre is utterly ridiculous!

  11. Back in the 70’s it was A NEW ICE AGE now its Global Warming the entire enviromental movment is based upon lies and junk science

  12. Your comment @ 1:46. Yes, they should be in jail for the massive fraud and the fleecing of taxpayers in the western world.
DrD @ 3:44, the “port” of Rye was not the only port to relocate inland. Ephesus, now Kusedasi in modern day Turkey, was a port during the 1st century AD and now is also a number of miles inland and the former entrance bay to the former harbour is farmland with homes, other buildings and a highway from the current port to Kusedasi.
No doubt there are other former ports that are now inland.
Hey, why shouldn’t they keep flogging the fraud, it is selling and they are making money at it.

  13. Since oceans cover all the world, and they are all connected, if the ocean level rose in one location, wouldn’t it rise in all locations?

  14. The ocean surface is not level. Tides, Coriolis effect and ocean currents change the levels constantly. It’s usually reported as mean [average] sea level, which compensates for some of the effects, however the ocean currents produce regional distortions.
