Why this blog?
Until this moment I have been forced to listen while media and politicians alike have told me "what Canadians think". In all that time they never once asked.
This is just the voice of an ordinary Canadian yelling back at the radio -
"You don't speak for me."

Invite them to land and buy them some beers down at the pub. Cheaper than chasing them around.
Old Vlad Putin really pines for the days of the old USSR.
By the RIMcMT I like that idea, a bit of Canadian cunning if I’ve ever heard it.
In retaliation we should send our entire fleet of B-1’s to maneuver off the Russian coast! Russian radar wouldn’t even pick them up!
http://www.militarydesktop.com/b-1-10985-wallpaper.html
Here they are practising a bomb run in Alberta.
Actually B1 they could easily pick up. But what is the point of demonstrating presence if the presence is not detected? You may as well claim you sent it an not send it at all.
Maybe Canada could send up a few of their super fast and stealthy Canadian designed and built fighters to protect their northern border. Or maybe show the flag on the Russian border with a few of their nuclear bombers. Or maybe they could buy some?
Back in my younger days this happened quite regularly those big old Russian Bear Bombers would fly into Canadian airspace over the East Coast. I once saw them with my naked eye intercepting a Russian bomber and chasing it. They looked like little flies buzzing around a giant bird.
Actually, inviting the Russian crews for a beer is probably a good idea. The casual souring of relations should not have happened and would not have happened except for the total diplomatic ineptitude of the US Administration.
As for the stealth of stealth, it has been claimed that the Russians make considerable use of long-wave (perhaps one metre or more) radar, which see “stealthy” aircraft quite well.
I feel too old for WW III, not that that will make a damned bit of difference.
Yes, the Russians could easily pick up the fleet of B-1’s, IF we had such an animal.
Alas, Canader has just a few 1982 vintage CF-18’s,I’m surprised we could actually get a pair into the air to intercept the Russkies.
And I agree, we should just claim we sent our stealth bombers right over Moscow last night, and not bother to mention we don’t have any of those either.
The Russians might know what equipment we have though, despite our super-great security on all our CAF bases.
The Russians are probably just testing us as they have been doing in England, as they know that next year, our new PM,the warlike Justin Trudeau, son of WW2 hero Pierre Trudeau,DSO, DFC, VC, will make it too dangerous to poke the Canadian Grizzly any more.
That Vlad Putin has SUCH a great sense of humor!
As I was saying in the Warthog thread, the Russians are doing more and more incursions into Canadian airspace. Still flying those 1960’s Bears too.
Really, we should have more and better than the surviving CF-18s that still fly. Good enough to see off the ancient Bears, but how about 200 Bears a week? Could happen.
Ghod forbid we should MAKE SOMETHING IN CANADA that we can supply parts for in perpetuity. Like the Arrow? Gee, what a concept! The friggin’ Arrow was designed to see off BEAR BOMBERS, there’s no reason it couldn’t be doing it now.
Or you know, we could make CF-18s. And Warthogs. Its not that hard to license and manufacture airplanes, Bombardier does it all the time. We already have all the support and trained guys for the d@mn things, why not local production?
Because the days of trusting the Americans to do all the work are over, baby. They’re broke, and their own leaders want to see that country -die-.
“Yes, the Russians could easily pick up the fleet of B-1’s, IF we had such an animal.”
When you said ‘we’ for a first time and mentioned Alaska I figured you were American. I am well aware Canada does not have these.
We definitely should build our own but please not the Arrow dream again. Everything about this plane would be obsolete soon after it deployed as originally thought out.
Two bombers intercepted?
That must have used up all of Canada’s Air force assets!
If you think that’s bad, the Mossad is training ISIS

No, when you think about it, it makes sense right? Not.
Neither truth nor credibility is a requirement for adherents to the Byzantine school of diplomacy, where embassies are an integral part of intelligence gathering networks, where misinformation, outright falsehoods and anything else to keep your adversary off guard is fair game. Make no mistake about it, Putin considers us an adversary, economically and politically.
Russia and their present leadership are masters at this devious style of “diplomacy.” Remember: they’re not invading Ukraine, you’re invading Ukraine; they’re not cold warriors, you’re fascists, and of course the eternal we can’t withdraw our troops because, tee hee, they’re not there.
What I think this all means is Russia is hurting right now, and their leadership is approaching desperation. The ruble has dropped 40% owing to their hyperdependence on oil and gas, at 50% of their economic output. Oil economics has done what NATO failed to do, degrade Russia. BTW, in Canada, the great villain, the entire oil & gas sector is 7% of GDP.
Wait, though until the Russians hear about this. Plumbing at energy wells is gasp, leaking, and is a threat to the eeeek, climate, and, oh yeah, water and resources:

Sorry, folks we’ll have to shut down the taaar saaands, because the way past temperatures have been cooling and present temperatures are adjusting up, according to the settled science models, they, at 0.5% of worldwide human GHG emissions are tipping the scale against Mother Gaia. Not China, not India. The oil sands. BTW it’s pure coincidence they’re competing against Saudi Arabian and Russian oil interests. Only a fascist would think otherwise.
No worries, the Russians will sell oil & gas to the Chinese for us cause their emissions are more climate just than ours.
we could make CF-18s. And Warthogs. Its not that hard to license and manufacture airplanes,
Creating a fleet of Canadian made CF-18s and Warthogs would be an excellent way to demonstrate political leadership and it would be good for our economy. Then create a few bases across the arctic to provide an economic anchor for the local economy like the US did in Alaska.
Oh for fickes sake. They were off the coast of BC! Give it to them! No lose. They can deal with the so called “First Nations”
Actually I was only joking above, I was actually pretty surprised that Canada had the capability to intercept even one Russian bomber, much less two.
Did Goldstein give you credit for ripping your line?
“The souring of relations should not have happened and would not have happened except for Putin invading and annexing parts of Georgia and Ukraine.”
FIFY
Is it just me or does anyone else think we should have just brought them down. Putin seems to think this is acceptable behavior when flying over a hostile country.
It’s just you. “off the northwestern coast of Canada” is international territory, not “flying over”. Get your facts straight instead of pushing hyperbole.
If you want to commit hostile unprovoked acts against foreign countries to fulfill your personal agenda, then go do it yourself.
Mind telling me what do you want to do with Warthogs in the Arctic? Or for that matter, what would Canada need warthogs for in the first place?
http://www.smalldeadanimals.com/archives/the-endangered.html#comments
Ok, so in other words, you knew nothing then and things haven’t changed.
Exactly!!
Russian reciprocity. CF-18’s now flying CAP over Lithuania, 8 minutes from Russian border.
“…what would Canada need warthogs for in the first place?”
To fly the strikes on ISIS in Iraq that the CF-18s are doing right now. And only doing so-so at, if you read the news. A10s would be better. And cheaper. New A10s with the latest networking and night vision available would be -so- much better.
CF-18s are needed to see off the Russian Bear bombers, those relics of the 1950s. Stalin’s dream of the ultimate WWII bomber, that’s still all Putin has got to come over the North Pole with in any numbers. They entered service 1956. The ones flying now were built in the 1990s according to Wiki. They have a bunch of ’em.
That’s what CF-18s are good at. We should have both.
Nonsense, Canada cannot afford a separate dedicated attack aircraft that in reality would only be used abroad to bomb turbans. Very few nations fly A-10 like aircraft, apart for Americans none in NATO flies these (unless you count AMX). What Canada needs is a state of the art multirole fighter that can serve as an interceptor, recon and attack. If there is money left buy attack choppers.
As for A-10 specifically, the operating costs are indeed very economical but starting production would not be. The producer went out of business. The production lines have closed decades ago. Can advocates of Canadian production A-10 at least verify whether tooling still exists? Because if you want to build everything from scratch i guarantee you that the per unit costs of the short production run for Canadian forces will be prohibitive.
In the year of our Lord 2345 when hovertanks armed with sonic cannons will be engaging reptilian walkers armed with photon torpedoes there will be groups on Earth who will subscribe to the following beliefs: (1) A-10 should be deployed to Alpha Centauri because it can do a much better job than any weapon system designed since, (2) If Arrow was not canceled it would make an outstanding space interceptor with only some minimal upgrades (3) If USN did not foolishly retired the Iowas these could be made space worthy in no time and would be better than the current flimsy spaceships with their silly plasma guns.
