  1. Speaking of dames, I picked up the current issue of Vogue mainly to see the article on Hugh Jackman who is going back on Broadway in something called River. I looked over the current crop of clothes and could only conclude that women are being dressed by clowns. All the colours are garish and clashing and the pants are often ripped. And of course the models are not allowed to smile.

  2. peterj: Covering the front pages of Newspapers!
That’s hilarious! When’s the last time you saw a kid stop and look at a newspaper?? By the time they can enforce the law, newspapers will have died off! My grandaughter at 3 years of age could find kid’s apps on her Dad’s I-phone.
    What a joke!

  3. re. naughty English place names – from Mark Steyn’s obituary compilation The Passing Parade, he writes about Diana Mosley (whose sister, the last Mitford girl, die in September incidentally http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deborah_Cavendish,_Duchess_of_Devonshire).
“Diana was my favorite (of the Mitford sisters), and hilarious company. Even when she was talking about something ineffably sad, she couldn’t steer clear of the jokes for long. Discussing her only brother Tom, killed in the war, fighting for King and country against the Japanese allies of her old friend and wedding guest,* she soon turned to happier memories: One weekend as children they’d been motoring with Lord and Lady Redesdale through the Oxfordshire countryside. At school, Tom had a crush on a boy called Milton. As they passed the sign for the village of Milton-under-Wynchwood, he sighed, “lucky Wynchwood.”

  4. I would also point out that there is a fishing village in Nova Scotia called Shag Harbour. Apparently they had a “UFO incident” once.

  5. Apology by Indianopolis Star for publishing cartoon criticizing executive amnesty:
Late Saturday the Indianapolis Star addressed the controversial cartoon, saying they “erred in publishing” it.
Executive editor Jeff Taylor wrote, “On Friday, we posted a Gary Varvel cartoon at indystar.com that offended a wide group of readers. Many of them labeled it as racist. Gary did not intend to be racially insensitive in his attempt to express his strong views about President Barack Obama’s decision to temporarily prevent the deportation of millions of immigrants living and working illegally in the United States. But we erred in publishing it.”
“The cartoon depicted an immigrant family climbing through a window of a white family’s home as Thanksgiving dinner was served. I was uncomfortable with the depiction when I saw it after it was posted. We initially decided to leave the cartoon posted to allow readers to comment and because material can never truly be eliminated once it is circulating on the web. But we are removing the cartoon from the opinion section of our website, as well as an earlier version posted on Facebook that showed one character with a mustache.”

  6. Since the Trudeau Puppet Show booted out two MP’s on allegations are they still representing the people of their ridings as Liberals? If the accusations are that serious why were they not forced to resign and allow by-elections to be called?

  7. The video is two years old, but still worth watching.
Muslim orchestra conductor gives Dutch Queen opportunity to ‘believe’.
The Dutch have learned too late that an imbalanced immigration policy does
    not work.
Canada still needs to learn that. Immigrants need to accept our culture and
add to it, not attack it.

  8. David Suzuki’s grandson arrested along with other Kinder Morgan protesters.
From the Sun article. “Another 26 people were arrested on Thursday after RCMP dismantled camps, including David Suzuki’s grandson Tamo Campos.
Suzuki wrote a letter supporting Campos’s action, which was posted on Facebook.
“Tamo is fighting for the world that will be left to his generation in the future. I believe what Kinder Morgan and companies like it are doing is an intergenerational crime but there are no legal precedents to pursue criminal charges on that basis,” Suzuki’s letter read.”

  9. We found another one — trouble with numbers:
    http://www.thestar.com/news/queenspark/2014/11/22/quebecontario_alliance_trumps_stephen_harper_snub_cohn.html
The central point of Mr. Cohn’s column, which is little more than an Ontario Liberal news release, and upon which he constructs his upside-down pyramid, concerns this so-called agreement about a 500 mW inter-tie between Ontario and Quebec.
This idea has been yakked about for at least 25 years, mainly by Liberal politicians, with little discernible progress. I’m no expert on that end of the business, but there seems to be a, you know, little technical problem around timing differences between the Ontario and Quebec systems, which will take a fair amount of dough and time to get resolved. Unexpectedly(!), none of any of that is mentioned by Mr. Cohn.
And, while I have no regard for Hydro One, I’m pretty sure that they’re all shaking their heads at the moment over this tater: the T&D system’s already under serious financial and operational stress due to the wind turbines, and now they gotta deal with this? As frightful as it is to admit, I kinda have some sympathy for them.
And let’s have a look at that 500 mW number: that amount of power wouldn’t even supply the City of London ON, which is somewhere south of 2.5% of Ontario’s population. When it comes to heating and air conditioning load, the swings in respective provincial demand can be 10,000 mW in the course of a few hours.
And as to 500 mW being the equivalent of a “large” power plant — the Bruce NGS is back up to 6,400 mW, thanks to private investment and management. And the Liberals have made great play of having closed Nanticoke, which was about 4,000 mW. If you were concerned about the need to defer construction of a power plant, why would you close Nanticoke?
Unexpectedly(!), none of this information appears in Mr. Cohn’s column.
Overall, I’m liking Mr. Harper’s attitude on the Ontario Liberal quagmire. He’s not like Mike Harris, exactly, looking to use the wedge very much. He’s sort of like:
    “Dear Kathleen:
We’re doing here what we said we were going to do. Sorry about your $12.5 billion annual deficit. I guess it sucks to be you. Have a nice day, if you can.
    P.S.: Harsher letter to follow”

  10. Wynne is acting cocky, just as those who voted for her expect of her, they gave he a majority. She now will take no blame for the mess she’s in, a financial quagmire which will put many, many Ontario residents in the same boat as they struggle to pay for everything they need to survive.
Health care and education were McGuinty’s battle cry every election, both are sadly lacking on many fronts.
Putting the blame on the Federal government and Stephen Harper when they refuse to bail her out is where she’s going just in time for the 2015 election. Looks a lot like the last refuse of a scoundrel scenario.
I can’t stand the sight of her, perfectly dressed and coiffed appearances don’t match the mess her party has created.

  11. *
“I had one lady yesterday, she works at a local restaurant here and said, ‘You know, I never thought I needed a gun… but the other night it dawned on me that if I don’t do something and my eight-year-old daughter dies, then I’m going to be responsible for that.”

  12. Darlington’s four reactors/generators each output about 890 Mw to the grid (plus or minus the amount generated by two dozen wind turbines depending on the temperature of the condenser water coming out of Lake Ontario)

  13. There is a road in Calgary that gives the Brits a chuckle. Shaganappi has meanings in England that don’t translate to Canadian.

  14. Absolutely true, which is precisely what I meant. And I’m sorry for that mistake — I just checked it out, and you’re right, expectedly(!).
I had understood (obviously incorrectly) that the convention was that the leading and following letters in a reference to kW or mW or tWhr, etc., capitalized the W as a matter of respect for James Watt, who, you know…
But all the numbers above are order-of-magnitude correct: all references to mW should be MW.
    Thank you for correcting me.

  15. This is a truly chilling article, the Doctors are seeking approval and reason for their slowly creeping specialty, and they use so many pc buzzwords to describe their practice.

  16. Young Italians finding prospects on the farm
Shunning white-collar jobs, young entrepreneurs are reclaiming and rebuilding the country’s agricultural sector.

Confronted by the most severe economic crisis since the Great Depression, and with little support from a debt-burdened government, an increasing number of Italy’s young people are returning to the land for agriculture production – a sector the generation before nearly abandoned.

Maiorano pointed to the results of a recent survey by Coldiretti, Italy’s association of direct farmers, which says that 54 percent of Italians under 35 would prefer to manage an agri-tourism business than work for a large multinational (21 percent), or be a bank employee (13 percent).
These results might also help explain this year’s 45 percent boost in students choosing a university degree in agriculture, and the 12 percent increase in teenagers opting for an agrarian institute over a traditional high school programme.

Why isn’t that happening here? Or is it?

  17. “Why isn’t that happening here? Or is it?”
Well, something is happening here as young men seem to be opting out of university where they will be put down by Marxist professors and radical feninazies. They seem to be either sitting in their mom’s basement or working in the oil fields.

  18. Understandable since young men with the ability to think for themselves and with a aversion to political correctness no longer find Universities a welcoming place of learning. Trade schools now hold the promise of a brighter future and are cheaper without the requirement to wade knee deep in bullshit. That every child should have a college or university education is flawed thinking that diminishes the value of any degree. A skilled tradesperson will always be in demand and most university graduates will probably probably be redundant when competing with the computer of the future. Case in point is one of my nephews who completed his degree in architecture. Nothing available in his field. Now working in the patch with no regret and better money than he had dreamed of.

  19. Agreed. I forgot about trade schools being another choice. Saskatchewan has a shortage of many trades.
