  2. I am just so tired of left wing “weinies” (who couldn’t start their own businesses) telling others what to do. And I am actually a big “garbage nut”. Having seen the amount of waste in Toronto where I used to live, I am very conscious of my garbage output. I try to recycle and compost as much as possible. When I renovate houses, I am very aware of garbage to the dump and again, try to reuse as much as possible and go to Habitat for Humanity’s Re-Store for sinks and old cabinets, ceramic tiles and old doors or windows. But this “extreme recycling” is just so over top. I am tired of successful businesses and countries having to apologize for their success.

  3. High efficiency incineration would dispose easily of all this cardboad and paper packaging. With a net benefit of some electricity generation. But the Nth Am greens are dead set against incineration in any way, shape or form and have been for 35 years.

  6. I jot financial particulars on paper, I submit this to Canada Revenue / “the tax department”, will they pay for requiring me to submit this? Will those that require me to submit this be paying for it from their pension funds?
    or will taxes need be raised to pay for higher fees and increased taxes to pay for higher enviro fees to be raised for … oh never mind.

  7. Needless to say the potential for nepotism/cronyism corruption in these green schemes which enrich a “third party regulator” is off the charts – but that is the appeal to the anti-free market crony parasites who support klepto socialism, kleptonomics and its mother ship, the UN.
    Modern socialism is about wealth redistribution – not to the needy but wealth redistribution to a political elite and their patronage cabal – at the expense of the small private producer – this is a prime example of government sanctioned theft tarted up with a green ribbon – the agents involved will reap windfall profits and the end result will not do one provable ounce of good for the environment. It is, in pith and substance, collusive racketeering.
    The scum who conceive and implement such racketeering should be dragged out of their cosy public digs and dipped in the tar before being sent to a Gulag for bureaucratic criminals. Public humiliation and banishment are fitting punishments for this level of public servant criminality.

  8. Another cash cow that’s being milked by the leftists. My Dad sold Coca-Cola in the 50’s. The empties were charged to the customer, they got the money back if and when they returned the bottle. Johnstone Dairies of Moose Jaw did the same with milk bottles. They still do that with 5 gal. water bottles. How about a re-usable pizza box!
    It’s not rocket science now is it??
    We had a hardware store in our town where the owner had set up a propane tank exchange. You simply swapped the empty for a full one.

    Maybe it’s time for some massive civil disobedience where ever theses kinds of laws are being inflicted on the citizen with strong hints that stronger protest might follow. That type of actions seems to work for the aboriginals why shouldn’t it send a strong message to governments from Canadians who actually contribute to the economy of this country.

We already recycle card board in our green bins or blue bags so charging businesses a fee for what the consumer does for free is basically creating a fictional collector who’ll pocket the money and provide zero services. This isn’t even remotely ethical it’s creating liberal cottage industry where no one has to go to work and they earn money providing services already done by consumers for FREE.

    I was there. Returning used pop bottles, which is what it was called back then, didn’t happen until the mid-60s. And they went straight into the landfill sites. 5 gallon water bottles are often full of dirt when people get them delivered or pick them up at the water stores, that’s why I installed an RO system in my home.

    Trees are a crop, just like potatoes. No need to recycle.

  18. There is already a similar entity in place in Ontario, called “Stewardship Ontario”. I have written letters to journalists urging them to look into it, without success. It has a somewhat nebulous legal status, since it is technically an NGO, but it is run as a non-profit corporation. It charges “fees”, since it has no legal power of taxation, and in spite of the fact that it must publish a financial report, a surprising amount of money is not accounted for. A small portion of its revenues are returned to municipal recycling programs, but much of it is “invested”, and where the money goes is not fully reported. If you look at the board of directors, it gives you a suspicion of who some of the beneficiaries might be. The simple fact is that this is a corrupt means of double-dipping, since tax payers already pay directly for waste disposal and recycling. The amount of money collected is patently and obviously far more than the amount actually spent on managing waste, but most taxpayers submit to being gouged simply because they are told that they must do their part to protect the environment. I’m very curious to know just how much wealth has been misappropriated by Tewardship Ontario and other shadowy organizations of this ilk. I think that this should be a huge scandal, but for the life of me I can’t seem to stimulate the least interest in professional journalists – even “conservative” ones. They simply don ‘t see this as a story worth investigating.

  19. If I were the pizza shop owner I would sell the pizza without packaging and sell the box as a separate transaction. Then the box becomes the property of the customer. How could the government stop this? If I could not sell the box and transfer ownership of it and the responsibility for its disposal then by what logic can the box manufacturer sell me the box and avoid the consequent disposal obligations?

  20. I am luckdy to have a fireplace, so no cardboard or paper to recycle, I use it to start the fires that help heat my home in the winter to save on electricity. I don’t recycle much, but I am forced to take yard clippings to the dump and pay. I put a lot of stuff in my garbage that probably should be doing elsewhere, but I am a law abiding citizen, not an obedient green droid. Sometime, I put stuff in the locl city garbage unit that all around the city …. to reduce what I put on the curb that I must pay extra for because I don’t recycle enough. I tried to find out where all the recycled stuff was going and what was being done with it … and if it was a financial gain or loser …. I recieve blank stares at city hall …. no one has yet to produce any valide information about where all this stuff they are makings us seperate out like trash bots …. so I think they are taking mos of it to landfill …. but they want to keep the illusion going. I am not delusional, so I don’t play the game.

  21. Indeed. What took generations to build will not be dismantled quickly, and smashing it all at once will not be palatable to an electorate brainwashed over the same period to a Liberal prejudice as to what is “Canadian.”

  22. I know they got rid of the NDPpers a while back but where did they get these new government whack jobs? Have they dropped the HST back the 2% the NDP raised? This is the same as blaming Timmies for the asshats who toss their empty cups along side the road.
    Back in the old (dating myself here) navy days, they had a term called “CDF” or Common Dog F*ck. Those more sensitive can call it common sense. My pizza boxes get recycled in the cardboard bin and that should be the end of it. To hit up small businesses to pay for some “turd party” to regulate and taxate is ludicrous. Trust me, those small businesses are not in there to get rich quick. Hitting them with this crap is just that: crap.
    Say, how about charging those free needle exchanges a needle deposit?
    Some days I look forward to SDA as a form of therapy and self help. SDA proves that not all of the world is crazy. One of these days I’m hoping to stop by in Delise and meet up with Kate and then scratch off another thing on my bucket list.

  23. Here in B.C.(Becoming Coolies). The plan is that we store our wet garbage in cans. I guess this is a welcome to new Canadians from exotic(third world) areas. They remember with fondness, the fly ridden/maggot infested piles of disease carrying filth. No idea where this is going, but the lib/con, party in power is going Lib on this one.

  24. The cardboard I collect makes excellent fire-starter during the heating season, it all gets ‘recycled’ as renewable heat.
    The article above is about unnecessary bureaucratic meddling and flogging a ‘sustainability’ agenda for power and control of people’s lives.
    For the recycling facility in our community, recycled cardboard, paper and plastic is a source of revenue. Nearly all business that generate waste cardboard have bins to collect it and the recycle centre picks it up. That’s just good business, since they have to pay to have their waste dumpsters emptied and the cardboard is disposed for free. No social engineering laws were required, and the businesses are happy to participate.

    Two words Mr. Cat sir: Mulching Mower. Mower cuts up the clippings and lays it all on the lawn. No raking, no windrows of clippings, no muss no fuss.
    I cut three acres here at Chez Phantom, no way I’m raking that and trucking it off let me tell you. Added bonus, you don’t need fertilizer as often, and you can MULCH the freakin’ leaves instead of all that raking and stuffing and hauling.
    Look into it. Just the sheer joy of not having to pay money at the dump will be worth it.
    Incidentally, all the recycling in Haldimand goes straight into the landfill. Take a trip to the Hagersville dump some time, you will see the “Recycling” truck pulled up next to the “garbage” truck on the pile, dumping their respective loads.
    Why? Because the sale price of a ton of plastic or a ton of paper is LESS than the cost of shipping a ton to the recycling plant from Haldimand. Negative return on investment, as it were. So they DUMP IT ALL.
    But we still have Blue Boxes and Blue Trucks. Gee, guess where the money for that came from eh? Hint, not recycling.

If your recycling center can’t make a profit on cardboard, paper and plastic then they’re not doing it right and I’d suspect there is incompetence, corruption, or excessive overhead funneled off to someone else. Fools and incompetents can screw up anything; you of all people should know that from the comments you make.

  32. Small business is the backbone of a healthy economy. They employ local residents and give people jobs. That pizza wasn’t made in China and delivered in a seacan. However the cardboard box and some of the ingredients probably did. Screwing with small business for some ‘sustainable green’ agenda is like killing the goose that lays golden eggs.

  33. The waste management business [aka. garbage-men] are well known for corruption, and often run by unionized mobsters. It’s not surprising they would run a recycling facility in the red then blackmail the municipality to give them more money from their ‘sustainable green’ budget. They’re criminals, not idiots.

    Of course the Liberals didn’t reduce the HST. Liberals don’t reduce taxes. Especially Liberals who make no promises whatsoever in an election campaign.
    I can’t stress this enough about this bunch of Liberals: they had absolutely no vision, no goals, no promises. They realized very early in the lead-up to the election campaign last year that they were going to win. The public had soured on the NDP, and the PCs had still not recovered from the stain of their last moronic premier. That left the Liberals as the default choice. All they had to do was not screw it up. So they didn’t. They said nothing of substance. They made no promises. Offered no vision. Set no goals. Offered absolutely nothing that would make anyone dislike them. So they won.
    Such is politics in Nova Scotia. Outright socialists (NDP), visionless grifters (Lib), and milquetoast losers (PC). Some choice, huh?

    Obviously. This is government we’re talking about, right?
    However there is one variable you haven’t taken into account, which is -distance-. Shipping costs money. There is a break point at which the value of the baled paper/plastic/whatever is lower than the cost to truck it from the baler to the buyer, the guy who turns the baled stuff into a product.
    Given five dollar a gallon diesel, that profitable distance turns out to be surprisingly short.
    Those buyers who work with the recycled material are mostly in the Toronto area. They can buy more product than they can possibly process from the Cities of Toronto, Mississauga and Hamilton, total shipping distance is probably under twenty miles. The volume is of course immense. That’s why they are there, that’s where the garbage is.
    Haldimand County has a comparatively miniscule volume, and the shipping distance is over sixty miles. The cost of shipping is probably double what the value of the material is.
    See, the problem is that no recycling business in its right mind would ever consider setting up shop in Haldimand. There’s not enough raw material for them to process, and they’re too far away from their end user market. That’s why everything goes into the landfill. Because it has to.
    The “incompetence, corruption, or excessive overhead” you’re talking about is BUILT IN to the legislation that forces every municipality in Ontario to go through the recycling motions, even when it is economically infeasible to SELL the end product.
    Do you buy common driveway gravel from the quarry five miles away, or do you buy it from sixty miles away? Same gravel, different shipping cost. Can the guy sixty miles away match prices with the five mile away guy? No way. It doesn’t matter how bad the local guy jacks you up, he’s still cheaper than the far away guy. Because = fuel+time.
    Here endeth the lesson.

  36. Phantom, government could lose money at anything, no matter how costless to them it is or obscenely profitable elsewhere. Tax air and lose money at it. Tax marijuana and lose money at it. Take over car insurance and lose money at it. Take over pensions and lose money at it. The list goes on and on.
    They call it “polluter pay,” aka stick a red hot poker up the anus of “capitalists,” the vast majority of whom are small business owners, like the pizza shop and daycare centre owner in the piece. In reality it’s pay to pollute; actually it’s just pay more, and more, and more.
    Nowhere in the proposal is there any plan to reduce cardboard for instance, so “pollution” is not reduced, but government gets more money to do with whatever they want, to stop fracking for instance.
    Maybe some watermelon could explain the actual mechanics of how a tax on cardboard increases recycling and sustainability. That would be as much fun as watching John Chretien and Jack Layton explaining to Preston Manning how a job is created. Hint: they didn’t have the foggiest idea – ditto goes for these Maritime apparatchiks.
    This bunch is even thicker than the Liberal Party of Toronto. The end user ponies up for all taxes and fees, just like the cost of cheese, it’s a cost of doing business. The owner can absorb it, go out of business, or pass it on the consumer, which happens to all low margin businesses. Even if the owner goes out of business, the user pays more because there are less pizza shops open, so supply is lowered, so price rises – Economics 101. It actually becomes a double hit because the low margin/high volume players still pass the tax on and then benefit by having their pizza prices bid up by the market.
    Everybody but the apparatchiks lose; so they’re good with that and use idiotic and incoherent arguments to back their case, to which only evil people would disagree.
    Oh, and you get to pay for that too.

    Gay marriage – ask the Supreme Court. What ever happened to Chretien’s definition of marriage as one man and one woman? Same thing.
    Energy trusts? Maybe income trusts? Canada had no way to collect corporate income tax on foreign owned units, actually any units, although the income in Canadian owned units would be taxed personally although at possibly a lower rate. They had to go.
