The only mistake she made was to apologize. (h/t Mike W)

“We should be offended by comments like that and we should be asking more, a broader vision and a stronger vision and stronger solutions and better solutions from the candidates who are stepping forward to become mayor,” said Nepinak.
First of all … I have no use whatsoever for anyone that lectures others on being “offended”. I find that offensive.
Chief Nepinak neglects to provide examples of “stronger vision”, “stronger solutions” and “better solutions”. These are grandiose terms but are completely meaningless without quantification. I think what he is saying translates roughly into “more funding”.
“” I think what he is saying translates roughly into “more funding”.””
damn straight
Why do I feel that the people who are being all BS PC about an issue verging on the truth ,are the same people who said nothing while Katz,Sheegl, and Shindico pillaged the treasury
Jeez,I used to live in Winnipeg’s North End back in the 1960’s,and was under the impression the the NE now leads the world in assimilation of Native peoples.
Lorrie Steeves has, barring an awakening by most of the electorate, condemned her husband to last place.
“The truth will set you free”, not nowadays. The truth will get you a kangaroo Court in front of a HRC tribunal.
“Derek Nepinak, grand chief of the Assembly of Manitoba Chiefs…”
Usage note to CBC: To avoid tribunals or lawsuits or any other costly quasi-judicial procedures, ensure that you capitalize ‘Grand Chief’ in future, just as you would capitalize ‘Grand Poobah.’
Nepinak said, “I think it’s problematic being that it comes from the wife of one of our candidates for mayor.”
i think it’s problematic that this grand chief of the assembly of manitoba chiefs hasn’t put his pants on and fixed the problem.
Lol have fun dishing out the money for your kids to go to college while we get to go for free not to mention receiving funding for it too. Woot woot free meds and dental care too 😀
My son worked and paid his own way through college. You didn’t?
Chief Nepinak should not be offended….he should be embarrassed!
Of coarse the solutions are always more funding…OPM
(other peoples money)
Interesting that the comments “came to light” on the same day as her husband announced his plans to clean up that area. Remember the smear job on a Wild Rose candidate that just happened to “come to light” a few days before the last AB election? Those were from a biblical quote made, I believe, on a church blog from years before the election, and had NOTHING to do with Wild Rose policy. Take note, those of a conservative nature – the media will go through EVERYTHING with a fine toothed comb, and it will “come to light” at the most opportune time for them to attempt to take you down. Wonder how many gov’t subsidized hours some reporter from CBC spent going through cached Facebook pages to find this? Forget policy debate – we are into gotcha journalism.
That’s why it is essential that people stop “apologizing” for every politically incorrect remark they may have made since they reached puberty, particularly if those remarks point to genuine problems. If, in the quiet of the voting booth, every person who has been harassed by, or tripped over, one of the people she was referring to in her comments, Mr Steeves would win by a landslide.
We are already living in a form of Thomas Hobbes’ “Leviathan” state, which is able, effectively, to punish free speech, but we still retain freedom of thought and, at least for now, a secret ballot.
Apologizing has become an epidemic. What really needs to happen is for folks or businesses to stand behind their choices or statements and tell the phony PC ranters where to get off. That is the only way this will stop. These days everyone apologises for everything and it is getting worse since all it takes is for a very few people to be insulted or offended to set the apology wheels in motion and we all know that no matter what the issue there will always be someone who takes exception.
This woman probably spoke the truth of her experiences that day and should never have to apologize. If you live in a city you will know for a fact that she spoke the truth and the ones who should apologize are the chiefs who fail their bands at every turn including providing schooling that prepares their young for this very lifestyle.
I had planned to retire to Winnipeg, where I was born and had attended university in the 1970’s. My sister suggested that I revisit the city, which I did in 2009. I was appalled at the number of “First Nations” people just walking or in some cases staggering around downtown. I was also dismayed at the number of Cash Stores on the main street of Portage Avenue and the number of very young pregnant FN women with 2 or 3 children already – again just walking around with no purpose. I have happily relocated to Regina and am so impressed with the energy and drive of this city.
Who are all those drunken, dark complexioned, people on the streets. One of two things? I guess they mustn’t be Indians or it must be racist for white people to notice. I’m sure the Supreme Court must think it illegal to pick up a drunken Indian. So the whores and drunks own the cities and whitie owns the suburbs.
Another part of the chief’s comments which lines up with the party meme, but is totally untrue, is that Mrs. Steeves is from one of the “privileged” sections of the city. The financial stability of her and her husband has nothing to do with privilege! In fact, many of those drunken individuals harassing her have far more privileges bestowed on them than she does. It has to do with showing up. Showing up as a kid in school, even when you don’t feel like it. Showing up at a job that starts earlier than you want to get up. Showing up at college when there is nobody to check on you. If the chief wants to point fingers, he can start with many of the individuals, especially the parents, in his own constituency. It is a marxist lie that those who are successful always got there because of unfair advantage.

@bkives So this trivial 4 year old comment knocks him off? Looks like the PC crowd runs your life. Most agree with her, may be a positive!
@CapersQ No. It became my work for the day. As well, “most agree with her?” Dude, those comments were way out there.
@bkives You might think that coming from the PC media bubble.
@CapersQ Bad news, bud: You’re the Bubble Boy. The vast majority of Canadians would find a “drunken native guys” rant reprehensible.
Kives stuck in the PC media bubble. People know the truth.
Anyone who’s offended by these comments hasn’t been followed by a drunken native begging for change downtown at night. I was followed for a whole block by one once. Huge guy and way drunk. He only stopped when he saw a police car up ahead.
Big Momma ” I have happily relocated to Regina and am so impressed with the energy and drive of this city.”
I lived several years in Winnipeg and was puzzled 30 years ago. Outwardly the city looks well off with a built up downtown which probably hasn’t changed much in 30 years. It also had square miles of Detroitscape like you can’t find in Edmonton or Calgary. Perhaps if the commies were booted for a few terms, it might perk up.
