Iraq has bought used fighter jets from Russia and Belarus to battle Islamist militants after long delays in the delivery of F-16 planes from the U.S. left troops without air support, Prime Minister Nouri Al-Maliki said.
The jets “should arrive in Iraq in two or three days,” Al-Maliki said.
Meanwhile… Obama Proposes $500 Million to Aid Syrian Rebels
h/t Dan T.

What’s an OBAMA? I am trying hard to forget.
Obama’s foreign policy is what Obama wants — not what the American people want. It’s his country — we just live in it.
It does appear that Obama is on the side of ISIS and the Muslim Brotherhood.
this is way off the post. does anyone know why the blogging tories is not functioning?
ISIS needs more Stinger Missiles! Obama hopes to create another Bin-Laden to fight Putin’s take over of the ME
Obama is just a childish coward! Brain dead John McCain will be happy! happy!
As I’ve been writing for quite a while now ….
America has a long-standing foreign-policy history of supporting Islamic militants (including pre-Obama), Russia fights them. Chechnya, for example.
Yet, somehow Putin is portrayed as the bad guy.
This Sunday, the Russian Orthodox church commemorates Sunday of the new martyrs of the Turkish yoke. Therefore, this is not a new issue in that part of the world.
Those who do not understand history are doomed to repeat it.
Russia was training Islamic militants, PLO-PLA, Black September, the IRA, Baader-Meinhoff, Red Army Faction terrorists etc. to bomb and hijack planes when you were in shortpants, bozo.
What about Chechnya? How is that an example?
Which one of your examples are Islamic militants?
The premise this thread is that the US continues to support Islamic militants.
Was Putin in charge when I was in short pants? No.
Your examples were from the Soviet Union, which is now on the scrapheap of history. It was also the regime that both my parents escaped from.
Bozo? Off your meds again?
Does this sh**head never learn? Obama wants to arm the “moderate” rebels in Syria! Today’s “moderate” is tomorrow’s radical extremist.
Concentrate on domestic problems for the next two years,Mr.Prez’dint, and let the Middle East work out it’s own problems. No matter what you do in the ME, you will f*** it up,as we’ve seen so many times before.
Send me the 500 million instead, and I will promise to say nice things about you on the blogs, which is more than you’ll get from any Muslim rebels you give arms and funds to.
The Soviet Union was just another name for Russia. No difference.
PLO-PLA and Black September were both Islamic terrorist organizations.
“Was Putin in charge when I was in short pants? No.”
As a KGB colonel was Putin in charge of training terrorists?
Very likely.
Russia attacked Chechnya in 1994, 1st Chechnyan War, and then again in 1999, 2nd Chechnyan War, killing huge numbers of civilians with airstrikes and artillery and you credit Putin with ‘fighting Islamic militants, Chechnya for example?’
Just shut up, already. The Moscow Theatre attack(most of the casualties were killed by Russian forces) and Beslan were just payback.
The Russians murdered 27,000 civilians with airstrikes and artillery in the first 5 weeks of the Battle of Grozny 1994-1995, 1st Chechnyan War, alone.
If the Russians weren’t such brutal bastards, all the Islamic militants they trained to attack us would still be toeing Moscow’s line.
Whose side is Obama on? He wants $500M to Syrian “rebels”. He couldn’t tell a “moderate” islamo-fascist from a “radical” one. It’ll all end up in the hands of our enemies.
No. Before the Islamic militants came the socialist militants. The first hijackings were due to them.
If this suggests that a lot of young men and women in the Middle East want to do us harm, well …
You really believe the Soviet Union doesn’t exist in Putins’ mind? His deepest wish is a return to the Soviet empire. Geez, where have you been?
Let us rewrite that headline: Obama Proposes $500 Million to Aid ISIS/ISIL
Geeeeeez, where y’a been? I don’t pretend to see into Vladimir Putin’s mind, but the clear evidence is that he is supporting
the Russian Orthodox Church as a foundation for a regrowth of Russian nationalism.
Oh well, you probably don’t know what Communism is, either.
“Obama proposes $500 million for Al-Qaeda’s rapidly developing Syrian Branch.”
Totally agree. And while some here think that “a return to the Soviet Empire” has to mean communism, let me be the first to say fascism, which is what Putin is clearly promoting, will serve just the same as communism for the guiding principle of the reborn Soviet Union.
Russia under Putin is already a totalitarian dictatorship.
Speaking to the thread topic, Obama cares not a fig whether the Syrian fighters he supplies are moderate or extremist. I’m wondering why he has bothered to send special forces to Iraq at all.
Whose side is Obama on? He wants $500M to Syrian “rebels”. He couldn’t tell a “moderate” islamo-fascist from a “radical” one. It’ll all end up in the hands of our enemies.
As opposed to the US being a imperial dictatorship which actively supports Islamic militants.
Who are you going to vote for in the next Russian election? Or the next US election for that matter? Bluster on.
The Russian people were the biggest victims of the Soviet Union. They may not like Putin, but he has to be a bit more of a hard-ass due to the Islamic militants who are close to Russia’s borders. They seem to appreciate an effort to resurrect the Russian culture, which contributed much to the world in literature, music and other things before being stifled by the Soviet Union. It’s not an easy job, but somebody has to do it.
America, on the other hand, has a leader who does not understand how the greatness of American was built. Back him if you must on this issue, but understand Obama has enabled the Muslim Brotherhood and dreams of the Caliphate.
Choose which one. The nation that does not tolerate Islamic militants or the one actively supporting them.
Living is easy with eyes closed, misunderstanding all you see.
“Choose which one.”
Neither, both are bad men. Both support Islamic militants.
For once, you’re not entirely wrong:
So what culture is being resurrected? And since you’re so keen on Russian literature, maybe you could ask yourself what, say, Tolstoy would likely have thought about ‘lil Vova’s geopolitical adventures?
Since Stalin has been dead for about 60 years, I’m unsure what harm he could do now … even though many Canadians who fled the Soviet Union had no vote in the survey.
Like the old saying goes: he might be a bastard, but he’s our bastard.
I understand there is some nostalgia for all periods of history and have spoken to Russian emigres who listed off Stalin’s accomplishments much like Hitler made the trains run on time. It was also pointed out that Stalin was not responsible for the period of drought that led to the period of pre-WWII starvation. That’s a factor I did not know until earlier this year.
I can only form my opinions from my parents’ experiences and by speaking with people who are from that part of the world.
The last source I trust is the media spin of the Cold War rhetoric, which would have us believe that the Russian people want a return of the Soviet Union. To me, that’s total crap even though there may be some elements who would like to profit fro the Redford-like corruption of the bureaucracy.
Even in Canada, there is no shortage of people who will run your life for you if only you let them.
My solution is to not let them.
Russia fights them. Chechnya, for example.
Russia trained those same militants when they were fighting in Abkhazia in the ’90s. Russia’s fight to oppress the people Chechnya has only generated more radical Chechens. Russia is also Iran’s primary client.
The only thing that sending arms to Iraq has achieved has been to arm ISIS and its allies. Send them F-16s too? Are people nuts? Let Russia and Belarus find a sucker to buy up their shovelware instead.
Spoken like every creepy apologist for fascism, ever. Thanks I’d rather live in America than Russia and Russia’s massive emigration says that many agree with me.
So what’s stopping you? Fly to Mexico, get some MS-13 tattoos, and climb onto the roof of a Northbound train. Obama will welcome you with open arms.
…WTF?
Look in the reader tips for my response when I posted this.
Written like somebody who is clueless about the threat of Islamic militancy on their own borders.
What would you suggest when they get in your face?
Just let them … or, like Obama, give them even more money?
The Chechens are oppressed? Or was it when the Islamic militants from Chechnya pushed across the Russian border, Russia pushed back?
America is visibly going down the tubes due to self-inflicted wounds. And you’d like to be part of that?
No thanks. I’d rather be in Canada than either the US or Russia.
Written like somebody who is clueless about the threat of Islamic militancy on their own borders.
I am fully aware of the non-existent threat of Islmaic militancy ‘on Canada’s borders’.
The Chechens are oppressed. Putin pushes a corrupt barbaric regime on them and violence there is only getting worse.
Islamic militants from Chechnya pushed across the Russian border
This event never occurred before Russia’s invasion of Chechnya.
America is visibly going down the tubes due to self-inflicted wounds. And you’d like to be part of that?
We’re gonna be a part of that either way. We’re not that strong, and we don’t have a serious military.
Good post, LAS. Every word is just true, too.
I made a post this morning at about 11:30 blog time but it’s still stuck in the filter.
It mentioned the 27,000 civilians the Russians murdered in the first 5 weeks of the Battle of Grozny when they used air strikes and artillery bombardment during the 1st Chechnyan War which the Russians started when they invaded.
The Moscow Theatre attack and Beslan came after the 2nd Chechnyan War. They were payback.
Yetlsin did himself no favours in this case. The Chechnyan actions were not, in the main, supported by the Russian people.
I have met one mother and her son who fled Russia because she feared her son was about to be conscripted into the army.
Much of this unfortunate history occurred immediately following the breakup of the Soviet Union with all its political turmoil.
My bad on the facts. Thanks for the clarifications.
Still does not change the fact the US is actively supporting Islamic militants while Russia is supporting those who are fighting the miltants.
Malaki is not including the Sunnis in gov’t, but then wasn’t Saddam Hussein part of the Sunni minority in Iraq?
Seems to me ISIS (Kurdish militants?) was gassed by Hussein.
This situation is such a mess that it’s probably better for the US to stand aside and let them fight it out amongst themselves. The referee never wins in this situationl
just want to reminder you ppl, opinions are like ass*oles, every one has one. Butt I’ll bet that the wives of a few in here have 2 of them, and I don’t mean opinions:-))))
ISIS (Kurdish militants?)
FAIL.
“Still does not change the fact the US is actively supporting Islamic militants while Russia is supporting those who are fighting the miltants.”
~syf
And what exactly has Russia done to help the Iraqi government?
Sent in the Iranian Quds units that they trained?
When you say, “Russia is supporting THOSE, who specifically are ‘those’ other than just Baby Assad? And why is Russia supporting Baby Assad other than to have another warm water port for her navy, not doing it to oppose Islamic militants who use the same brutal methods as Russia does, but just to get a sea port.
What I’m saying here is that Russia isn’t against Islamic militants or even a narrow group of Islamic militants, they just want a sea port and they’re willing to kill and brutalize any number of people to ensure they get it.
You admire that, syf, I don’t. That’s the kind of approach that leads to really big wars, or at least to direct reprisal attacks on the homeland like the Moscow Theatre attack and Beslan.
Points to you. The very people who caused 9/11 are now Obama’s criminal administrations “friends”. The very people pledged to destroy America are now moderate Muslims.
The folks who want to kill all none believers are the Now the White Houses new buddies.
Nope The cabal now running DC are not Islamists, oh no they just act like it. Mean while Mexican air craft are shooting at Americans as Obama sends lawyers to stop any effort against Mexico’s invasion against the United States.
It’s not every day when you can say that someone’s policy is all over the map and mean it both figuratively and literally.
It may come as a surprise that those of us, in our side, who conducted the COLD WAR had a better grasp on things than advertised.
Item: we knew the “Domino Theory” was bogus, long before the Chinese and the NVA had their little scrap…..the Chinese were looting the Soviet arms rail shipments for the Vietnamese. That’s why the Port of Haiphong had so much Soviet shipping….
Item: we and the Soviets were well aware that once communist expansion was contained the entire structure would collapse…as it did.
Item: we knew the Russians were Russian first and communist a distant second…..same for the Chinese and Vietnamese. The Soviets had, out of necessity, successfully harnessed nationalism during the “Great Patriotic War”
The Russian nostalgia for the past past empire and superpower statis is to be expected…..witness the Scots still humming “Oh, Flower of Scotland” or Americans displaying the Stars and Bars…..the global reinactor phenomena….everything from samurai, to storm troopers.
