  1. The Price of Electricity In The U.S. Is About to Skyrocket
Here’s the sad, dark truth about our aging electrical grid: The way we generate power is not sustainable and needs to change. Here’s the other sad, dark truth: As the U.S. becomes more reliant on renewable energy like solar and wind, our electricity bills are going to go up. Way up.
In fact, you might have already seen some rate spikes on your bill. A cold, snowy winter is to blame for some high electricity prices in much of the country, while a drought is driving up prices in the West. But according to this insightful Los Angeles Times article, those temporary shifts are evidence of a larger trend pointing towards increasing “fragility” in the grid:
There is a growing fragility in the U.S. electricity system, experts warn, the result of the shutdown of coal-fired plants, reductions in nuclear power, a shift to more expensive renewable energy and natural gas pipeline constraints. The result is likely to be future price shocks. And they may not be temporary.

Obamacare = electronic medical records. Just add it to the pile of stuff that’s going to be available to any government spook who says they want it. (The easily offended should be aware that “spook” for the purposes of this conversation means “secret policeman”, or “spy”.)

  3. PEDv – USA – Failing Production Model
“We move pigs around a lot, which increases risk,” added Torremorell. “Our production model is a disadvantage.”
Their problem, as in Britain and elsewhere, is a massive infrastructure: intellectual, financial, sales and physical committed to the current production model.
It is going to be a major problem to change course to something safer and more resilient.
If they solve PEDv with vaccines, as they hope eventually, there will still be a dozen more disease disasters lined up to exploit the same weaknesses in a dangerous failed model.
And that is a model reliant on huge quantities of antibiotics to keep co-infections under control and any semblance of a successful industry.

  4. The elephant clearly understood what was going on there, but the keys were too small for its trunk. It would probably take only a couple hundred dollars in parts to make a keyboard suitable for an elephant’s trunk, with maybe two octaves of keys

  5. On the Supreme Court decision on Senate I’d say PM Harper has an opportunity here to open the Constitution and change the mess Trudeau gave us the insanity called the Charter of Rights and Freedoms. It’s a tool for unelected Supreme Court rule, a cop-out for politicians to renege on making tough decisions. If, as it dictates, all are equal before and under the law, how come it makes some more equal than others in this democracy?

  6. Interesting week

  8. O’o + Chavez: narcissists.
The natural end result of socialism, the religion of the stomach.
“In the aftermath of his regime – the narcissistic leader having died, been deposed, or voted out of office – it all unravels.”
““The president dies and the project dies with him,” Eumir Perez, William Lara’s former coordinator, said in an interview in Calabozo, a town in Guarico state 60 miles (97 kilometers) from the project. “The government is too busy staying in power, fighting against the capitalists’ economic war. No one dreams big anymore.””

    “IV. Narcissistic and psychopathic Leaders”
“The narcissistic leader prefers the sparkle and glamour of well-orchestrated illusions to the tedium and method of real accomplishments. His reign is all smoke and mirrors, devoid of substances, consisting of mere appearances and mass delusions. In the aftermath of his regime – the narcissistic leader having died, been deposed, or voted out of office – it all unravels. The tireless and constant prestidigitation ceases and the entire edifice crumbles. What looked like an economic miracle turns out to have been a fraud-laced bubble. Loosely-held empires disintegrate. Laboriously assembled business conglomerates go to pieces. “Earth shattering” and “revolutionary” scientific discoveries and theories are discredited. Social experiments end in mayhem.”

  9. Some advice for politicians from Stockwell Day;
    http://www.cbc.ca/news/politics/advice-for-politicians-caught-in-the-media-firestorm-1.2623314?

There is increasing evidence the broader public is becoming a tad dismissive of what some in the media refer to as an “explosion in the Twitterverse” on any particular issue.

When people start to do the math, one or two themes may emerge.

First, the “universe” that is exploding is often only a tiny — albeit activist — sliver of the overall population.

Second, many times the apparently spontaneous expression is actually a result of coordination among groups that have well-honed lists of responders willing and able to fire out intimidating messages to media networks or even to advertisers on those networks.

  11. The F-35 sucks and no one should buy or use it.
all three versions of the F-35 are oversized, overweight, underpowered — and still under development.
In 2008, a RAND Corporation study found that the F-35 has a high “wing loading” and a poor “thrust loading” compared to other fighter jets. The biting conclusion: “It can’t turn, can’t climb, can’t run.”

“Angela Merkel’s Vice Chancellor Stuns, Declares Germany’s ‘Energiewende’ To Be On ‘The Verge Of Failure’!”
“The green energy orgy in Germany is over. The music has stopped and the wine that once flowed freely has long run out. The green energy whores and pimps can go home.
In a stunning admission by Germany’s Economics Minister and Vice Chancellor to Angela Merkel, Sigmar Gabriel announced in a recent speech that the country’s once highly ballyhooed transformation to renewable energy, the so called Energiewende, a model that has been adopted by a number of countries worldwide, is “on the verge of failure“.”
“Speaking at an event at SMA Solar, Germany’s leading manufacturer of solar technology, Gabriel even dropped yet another admission bomb:
The truth is that in all fields we under-estimated the complexity of the Energiewende.””

” This is the first in a series examining health repercussions for Canadians due to a changing climate.
The latest report from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change notes that the number of cases of Lyme disease is already on the rise in Canada, and that the vectors (the ticks) will continue to spread along climate-determined trajectories.”
Disease-carrying ticks in Canada have increased tenfold in the past two decades , spread by migratory birds and nurtured by warming climates that allow them to thrive in our own backyards.”

BUT, the IPCC has also acknowledged the 17 year pause in ‘global warming ‘.
” Struggling to keep a discredited global warming crisis afloat, United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) chair Raj Pachauri this week denied the well-documented plateau in temperatures during the past 15-plus years. ”

  16. If Palin is a spent force, why is the WaPo wasting time attacking her?
Palin has a huge following in grassroots-heartland America. A lot of Americans, especially women, idolize her. Her endorsements in elections gets votes. If she wasn’t a force to be reckoned with, then they would ignore her. It’s much like the situation in Canada where Mulcair is largely ignored, but if JT does anything they’re all over it.

  17. “The government is too busy staying in power, fighting against the capitalists’ economic war. No one dreams big anymore.”
Maybe they should give Ken Dryden a call. Empty-headed talk about “bigness” is his forte.
Capitalists do dream big. The difference is they use their own money.
