  1. Oh my, Albertans and that evil Harper are going to kill the whales.
    http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/british-columbia/northern-gateway-would-up-risk-of-whale-strikes-biologist-1.2623024
Apparently a marine biologist came to the startling conclusion that more ships in the ocean would increase the likelihood of whales being hit by a ship.
Our CBC took that statement and manufactured a story opposing the Northern Gateway pipeline. The biologist runs a blog that deals with whales, but there is nothing on that blog that mentions the pipeline.
The CBC took a thread and wove a tapestry of deceit. As per usual, the author of this drivel is ‘CBC News’. They write trash and hide behind anonymity.
A billion dollars doesn’t get you much these days.
IMHO, and I am not a marine biologist or a CBC reporter and never have pretended to be either, the greatest threat to whales from ships would be from the ones that are carrying eco-tourists directly into their areas.
    But oh, that is different.

  2. Conrad Black has an excellent article about the horrors of the US Injustice system. Sometimes I wonder about moving to the states, but then I think of their justice system and realize I’m better off here, as long judges keep ignoring or striking down the moronic TUFF ON KRIME legislation the feds churn out.
The real problem is that American prosecutors, as I have had occasion to write here before, terrorize the entire country with impunity. They win 99.5 percent of their cases, 97 percent without a trial (as against much lower success rates in Canada and the U.K.). The plea-bargain system has been misshapen into the extortion or subornation of incriminating perjury in exchange for immunities, including from charges of perjury. And whatever liberties the prosecutors take are never punished.

  3. That’s what Canada gets for following the US and politically posturing instead of considering long term ramifications of foolish decisions in the heat of arguments. One more nail in the coffin.

It doesn`t matter what the CBC airs–it`s distorted propaganda. What I`d love to know is who is behind it all??
I`ve always believed that a consorted effort to boycott targeted sponsors who advertise on the CBC is the only way we`ll ever stop it!

  5. Nevada rancher Cliven Bundy, he of the standoff with federal agents a couple of weeks ago, is on the hot seat for some intemperate remarks (made in a video which is not current) that touch on the race issue:
    http://www.newyorker.com/online/blogs/closeread/2014/04/cliven-bundys-slavery-delusion.html
Referring to blacks seemingly just wasting time on the porch who he sees as he drives around, he was quoted as saying, “I’ve often wondered, are they better off as slaves, picking cotton and having a family life and doing things, or are they better off under government subsidy? They didn’t get no more freedom. They got less freedom.”
First of all, idleness is just as bad a problem for whites and other races as it might be for blacks. It’s a human issue of psychology, and isn’t racial in nature. If you want more of something, subsidize it. Commentators such as the one in the link have ripped other holes in Bundy’s thoughts.
But I was struck by a line I read in the Herb Gray obituary in the Globe and Mail last Wednesday: “… he believed in the power of government to do good”.
When you think about it, this is exactly the same as claiming blacks were better off on the plantations prior to the Civil War (which I recognize is not necessarily exactly what Bundy said). Both slavery and taxation are coercive. Both sets of coercers are paternalistic, and claim to be doing it for the benefit of the coerced.
Even a black slave who was relatively well-treated probably would (and indeed should) resent his lack of freedom. Similarly, the poor taxpayer who is repeatedly hit on to support idiotic schemes like the Ontario green energy program, quite possibly the single worst government-created economic disaster in Canadian history, has every reason to resent his powerlessness. That some of the political elite is elected in relatively free and fair elections and that some things government does are worthwhile doesn’t change the fundamental principle.
Slavery can never be a good thing because the immense moral evil of it outweighs any possible benefits that some individuals might get. And government cannot “do good” because the evils of taxation and coercion outweigh any possible benefits that some individuals might receive.
Few are saying taxation can be wiped out overnight. But we should be starting to discuss how to vastly reduce the coercive power of government so that we can plan for the end of taxation a couple of decades down the road. The noblest political goal is a tax-free, coercion-free society.

  6. Slavery is an equal opportunity thing. We today all fixate on American black slavery, but until the British enforced abolition globally (almost) in the 19th C it was a universal thing, time immemorial. In fact, it is still practiced in some uncivilized places.

Lord Tebbit, the former Tory chairman, also said he expected Ukip to make history by becoming the first party other than Labour or the Conservatives to win a UK-wide election since the first world war.”

  17. Won’t someone think of the baby whales ?
    Well, the answer is yes.
Up above I put in a link to the CBC article on the upcoming demise of the humpback whale at the hands of the Conservative party.
Today, on CTV’s Question Period the media party went a step further. Bob Fife interviewed Lizzie May on the subject. BTW, she looks like she is slimming down.
    http://www.ctvnews.ca/video?clipId=327268
It starts at about the 31 minute mark.
Anyways, May and Fife BS’ed each other on the subject. It just ain’t the big whales, it is the baby whales (calves) that will also suffer. Lizzie even brought up the matter of their ‘acoustic environment’ being severely compromised. Fife grimaced and nodded sadly.
They are either ignorant, or lying. I suspect a lot of both.
There are about 2,000 humpback whales that feed in the waters off the B.C. coast.
The pipeline will put another 440 tankers into those immense waters, basically one a day.
The whales are not in danger. I would bet that the best ship captain could not hit a whale no matter how hard he tried. Tankers are huge slow-moving ships. Whales by comparison are much smaller, faster, and very aware of their space.
The ‘acoustic environment’ remark was said for emotional impact only, it does not have any merit. It was used to remind viewers that whales are more developed than the average ‘sea kitten’ that ends up as part of a fish and chips meal. The eco-freaks and Harper haters are going to use the whales as their next weapon.
If you google “whale watching B.C.” you will find pages and pages of tours available. These tour operators will bring their boats up close and personal with the whales.
But, oh that is different. Those boats carry affluent eco-tourists.
