Three years ago, flooding forced hundreds of residents from their homes on Manitoba’s Lake St. Martin First Nation reserve.
The reserve was condemned, dozens of houses slated for demolition, and many residents have been living in hotels ever since.
Ottawa paid nearly $2 million to destroy the homes. But CTV has learned that as many as 40 of the buildings were lifted from their foundations, moved elsewhere and sold for about $20,000 each.
In some cases, the sold homes still contained their former residents’ belongings.

“That buyer told me he bought it from the Lake St. Martin chief,” Beardy said. “He admitted he bought it from Lake St. Martin chief, but he wouldn’t tell us how much and who pocketed the money.”

Reminds me of the old saying, “On every reserve, the Chief’s driveway is always paved.”
Is this illegal?
if so, How illegal is it? Is it like running a red light? or is like, a race crime?
Is it against the law for a white man to befriend a couple of status Indians and sit down, pound some whiskey back, then buy the man’s house on the Indian Reserve for… let’s say, $500… then lift from the foundation and move the house across the lake to waterfront property? Let’s say for example, “Round Lake, Saskatchewan” Then live in that house for a decade and sell it for + $300,000. ?
I don’t see what difference it makes if the house was in flood plane. The house my ex father in law bought was at the top of the valley, he paid the individuals, not the band. Is the house “band property”? or is it legal to buy them every few years from individuals living on the Indian Reserve?
My ex sister in law said in her perfect ex sister in law snarl, “shhhh” to my ex wife while my ex wife told me about this.
Kinda curious if my ex-father in law broke the law here… 🙂 They were all NDP’ers and publicly they love everyone, unless you’re rich… He offered the book, “Touched by Tommy” to me when I first met him. I politely declined.
What’s the statute of limitations, the time limit on something like this?
I’d hate to see my ex father in law GO BACK to jail, or my ex wife to lose her inheritance from him when he croaks.
😉
I’m being serious… The house my ex father in law bought wasn’t condemned, it was just, a normal Indian Reserve house, about 900 feet, 2 bdrm, 1 bathroom. It looks ok on lakefront property on Round Lake, Sask. though…
He fixed it up some…
Who should I contact?
-Q) Is the house “band property”?
A) Yes.
-Q) Who should I contact?
A) The “band police”. 8^D
All our taxes given to the reserves are wasted money anyhow.
What difference does it make?

It’s good to be Chief!
marc in calgary “What’s the statute of limitations, the time limit on something like this?”
Canada has no general criminal statute of limitations.
The first clue on a reserve should be that the house is missing. Everyone at the Enoch Reserve by Edmonton got new houses over 30 years ago and last time I saw, a few years ago, the old houses were still next door to the new ones.
There is a always a big screen TV because there is always a bureaucrat on a pretty good screw from the taxpayer (who needs to be doing something to while away the office hours) who can give away more of someone else’s money.
I’m having a hard time deciding who to be sorry for here.
I see the choices as follows:
The band members who’s homes were sold off with their stuff inside while they spend their days in Winnipeg hotels trashing rooms and complaining that they can’t return to their traditional way of living on the reserve.(what, can’t they cash their government cheques while living in Winnipeg?)
The crooked chief who’s just trying to make a living by selling out the very people who elected him to look after their best interests?
The (most likely) white people that bought the homes in question who are undoubtedly going to be vilified by the media as taking advantage of the band when all they did is buy something that was for sale.
My front runner is being sorry for the tax payer who will keep on paying for band members to live off reserve for as long as they can milk the system. All the while complaining about the horrors of indoor plumbing, increased employment opportunities and worst of all, the disrespect we show them by not allowing them to return to their reserve to sit, do nothing and cash the treaty cheques.
not sure who to blame Harper , or G W Bush by association.
but it would be a dipper riding , maybe Angry Thomas can investigate
crime is who pocketed $2M for demo and did nothing?
Note to my Selfish..
After Obumblebe destroys America, and if I am still alive,
Make a move to Canada close to an Indian-Native Canadian-Aboriginal reservation,
squat on the land and wait for lots of free shit…

Anyone know how to program a large screen TV?
Get a Smart TV, it programs itself. And then while you watch it, it watches you back.
Possible applications on Reserves?
And there’s always a large club-cab pick-up sitting in it.
Hey! everyone Knows that any speaker can be used
as a microphone (not a very good one) but with a simple gateway nothing is private, even when you think it is off. Boo!
Boo is my dog that is sitting here watching me as I scratch my head wondering what is next for Indians to piss my tax dollars away.
Your router may have a back door in it.

I see you boo and raise you a boogabooga.
Now I know where to get a house for cheap when we finally purchase an acreage. Hobbema is just down the road and by the looks of most houses, I just need to replace the plywood with windows.
“Who should I contact? ”
you should contact a lawyer. What are you doing talking to your ex-wife anyway?
Not every ex-relationship has to be enmity. My wife and I had Easter dinner with my ex- and our kids. My ex- is actually a very wonderful lady who just couldn’t stay married to the self-centered dork that I used to be when I was an unbeliever.
I thank the Lord every day for my wonderful present wife who finally led me back to Jesus.
I haven’t spoken with her since 2005, hence my query of statute of limitations in this regard.
Post divorce, we got along very well for a few years.
That’s funny, because it’s true.
Watch this CTV video and see how Chief contradicts himself about disposal of these houses. What has to be learned yet is who got the money?

Back on topic then, I take it this means that Attawapiskat is not necessarily the worst run reservation in Canada, and that Theresa Spence may not be uniquely corrupt? Just maybe, the Idle No More movement might go looking at their own leadership as the place that really needs cleaning up before sniveling about how the rest of us owe them more.
And the rest of the story goes: there are dozens of brand new homes, furnished right down to the silverware sitting there that no one will move into because living in Winnipeg is so much better. To top it off a person from Winnipeg is paid for security at these uninhabited homes but never seems to make a trip out there.
I saw these home, they are very nice and completely brand new including basements. There are paved roads here.
Just check with people from Ashern or Steeprock area to find out more.
