The Sound Of Settled Science

New structure discovered in canine eyes;

“It’s incredible that in 2014 we can still make an anatomical discovery in a species that we’ve been looking at for the past 20,000 years and that, in addition, this has high clinical relevance to humans,” said William Beltran, an assistant professor of ophthalmology in Penn’s School of Veterinary Medicine and co-lead author of the study with Artur Cideciyan, research professor of ophthalmology in Penn’s Perelman School of Medicine. “This gives us a structural basis to support the idea that dogs might have a higher visual acuity than has been measured so far,”

  1. Well designed by a Perfect Designer/Creator.
So begins the great debate… 🙂

  2. He designed their sense of smell to the nth degree as well. I just read a book about a bomb sniffing dog that was written from the dog’s point of view. Really interesting.

  3. This morning my 10 year old German Shepherd darted clear across the yard after a squirrel in the bushes against a fence that camouflaged it.
I remember thinking the same things as these researchers; and it didn’t cost a dime.

  4. Empirical evidence supporting evolution:
Millions of pages, the fossil record, etc.
    Empirical evidence supporting creationism:
    Zero.

  5. Empirical evidence that preaching atheists are as annoying as hemorrhoids:
    Billions of internet pages.

  6. As you say, Yeahwell, there is loads of circumstantial evidence of micro-evolution, and our own guided evolution of dog species. Many of us don’t debate that. A universe formed by a miracle (big bang), kept stable by a second miracle (fundamental laws of physics changing in the first micro-second), and containing the wonders of stable stars, a nuclear-strong force that allows for nuclear fusion (to gain heavier elements) but is also weak enough to allow for fission, a nuclear-weak force that allows for different forms of chemical bonds. Gravity that is strong enough to form stars and planets, but not so strong to have single black holes forming in the place of galaxies…
“Creationist” to me doesn’t mean that the earth was created 5 minutes ago, complete with false memories. Or 10,000 years ago, with false memories and strata. Even if the young-earthers are right, the argument can be made by believers that He made it to look old, and He’s the master craftsman. I choose to believe the universe is older than that. I also choose to believe that it was created by something outside of what we know as space-time, and that it is too well balanced to be accidental. And I find it astonishing that a stone-age culture would get the order of creation right (allowing for the difficulty in getting across ideas like “the ancestors of present-day birds” to define dinosaur pre-cursors as “creatures of the air”). After a while we have to apply Occam’s razor (and no, Occam, that’s not intended as a shout-out).

  7. I too grow tired of atheists and born-again atheists knocking on my door….

  8. The Bible is not a science book.
To paraphrase: Render unto Einstein what is Einstein’s….

  9. Really? They found a way step away from their keyboards and leave their basements??? Talk about evolution!

  10. It isn’t science until observed results are verified over and over by independent investigators. In today’s world that occurs every time I switch on the PC, start the vehicle, drink a glass of water, monitor my blood pressure…
The green NAZIs abhor science. That is why they just make s**t up, force us into meaningless recycling rituals and SLAPP people who question their dogma.

  11. It’s not empirical evidence, it’s “systematically distorted” evidence according to Jonathan Wells, PhD. PhD.

  12. Ahh yes, the 100+ year old conspiracy, called “The scientific method”…surely you’ve heard of it?

  13. Off topic, but there’s a poll that requires our services in todays Peterborough Examiner.

“Do you agree with the decision to allow the Enbridge Line 9 pipeline to be reversed to allow oil from Western Canada to get to Eastern Canada ports?”
Currently the environazies have voted NO by 80%

  14. Humans are the only species that doesn’t follow the precepts of Darwinian evolution. Why did humans ‘suddenly’ change significantly about 10,000 years ago, after more than a hundred years of stone age, relatively static culture?
Göbekli Tepe, the world’s oldest discovered temple offers some clues.

  15. I suspect that dogs have been lying in the Sun with humans fer a lot longer than 10,000 years.
I have had many associations with muslims, who loath dogs as unclean and are chagrinned their kids all want a dog…..it’s now in our DNA and probably in the dog’s DNA.
Yeah I am fully aware that feral dogs are extremely dangerous….I figure it’s because like Polar Bears they don’t fear humans……due to their size and strength, Polar Bears only fear adult Walrus, on land, head on.

  16. Of course both sides in the debate are completely wrong. You can prove it to yourself if you want to. Join any MMO out there that require use of brain cells (World of Tanks is perfect for that). Gather some experience and observe other players. You will soon realize that despite playing thousands of games they do not evolve into competent players and that there is nothing intelligent about their design. Hence as a certain stand up comedian concluded, both creationists and evolutionists are wrong, humanity started when drunken aliens raped monkeys.
Disclaimer: the above method works only if your IQ exceeds your shoe size.

  17. Yup, dogs ‘domesticated’ humans about 30,000 years ago. It took humans another 20k or so to become ‘civilized’.
The More I Know Humans…the More I Love Dogs.

  18. humanity started when drunken aliens raped monkeys.
…or when aliens modified human DNA so they could interbreed. Same story, different interpretation.

  19. “It’s incredible in 2014…” So, does that mean the science is really NOT settled? Hmmmm. Curious…
