In Any Form

Last month Justin Trudeau removed all Liberal senators from the party caucus and vowed to Canadians that “these senators will no longer be Liberal organizers, fundraisers, activists in any form.”
As it turns out, former Liberal senators will no longer act as fundraisers for the LPC unless it’s for the specific purpose of fundraising for the LPC:

Last Saturday (Chrietien appointee) Sen. Mobina Jaffer was the featured speaker at a fundraising potluck dinner in Trenton, Ont., hosted by the Bay of Quinte Federal Liberal Association.

John Brisbois, the president of the local riding association:

“To (the Liberal Party of Canada’s) credit, they realized the motivation for people coming was above political partisanship and would be another reason women would be marginalized if we removed her.”

LPC spokesperson Andrée-Lyne Hallé:

“This is a transition period for senators who no longer are in the Liberal caucus, and riding associations are free to make their choices of who speaks to their members.”

  1. this reminds me of the Alberta Liberal Party who has repeatedly tried to convince Albertans for years that the provincial Liberals are no longer part of the Federal liberals except for sharing the same fundraising events, provincial Liberals Leaders getting (no longer Liberal but still Liberal caucus) senate seats and being the same organizing group for both and having federal Liberal MP’s show up for provincial fundraising events etc.

So do they call themselves “Fiberals”, “LIEberals” or merely the ‘brown envelope brigade’?
And don’t hold the gravy, eh?

  3. The Liberals had a high regard for the Senate whenever they had an overwhelming majority there. At one point PM Louis St. Laurent had to appoint one PC to the Senate because otherwise they would have lost their official party status for having under FIVE Senators. During the same period he appointed 51 Liberals. The original Trudeau appointed 70 Liberals. Chrétien appointed 72.
For around a century the Liberals liked the Senate a lot. Now that the Conservatives have a majority due to Harper being in power for 8 years, Senators are suddenly persona non grata.

  4. Several of the former Liberal Senators have stated they have every intention of participating in all party events, including fund raising. The new leader (old Leader) of the Liberal Senators repeated this to E Solomon 2 days ago.
There is nothing Jr can do to make them desist. His father’s Charter says something about rights of association and free speach. Also the LPC constitution. Look for more Senators to thumb their nose at Jr as time passes; already press stories refer to Liberal Senators, which is what they are.
