Tonight, via one of those Superbowl ads we generally don’t get to see in Canada, we take a look at the newest variant of those trendy, so-called “designer mutts” like goldendoodles, cockapoos, and puggles: Behold the pint-sized but fearsome Doberhuahua.

  1. The New York Senate has passed legislation that would bar public or private colleges in state from using state funds to fund groups that support academic boycotts, The Albany Times-Union reported. The bill is designed to take a stand against the American Studies Association, which has voted to back a boycott of Israeli universities.”

  2. EU scraps its own modest green energy targets despite willingness to lecture Canada
    http://fullcomment.nationalpost.com/2014/01/30/matthew-fisher-eu-scraps-its-own-modest-green-energy-targets-despite-willingness-to-lecture-canada/
    Matthew Fisher:
Europeans have never been shy about calling out Canada for everything from the harvesting of baby seals to its treatment of aboriginal peoples to, of course, the great abomination of the moment, which is how Europeans regard what they call Alberta’s “tarsands.”
Given Europe’s willingness to tell Canada and the rest of the world how to behave in their own backyards, it’s ironic that the European Union announced last week that it wants to scrap plans for what were already fairly modest mandatory targets on energy produced from renewable resources such as wind power and solar power.

“Libs say MPs stopped sharing Senate resources after Trudeau’s announcement Wednesday”
“When questioned about the system on Wednesday, following Mr. Trudeau’s announcement, Liberal Senator James Cowan told The Hill Times: “What we’ve done is hired researchers and shared the results of that research with the [Commons] Liberal research bureau, that’s what we’ve done. We haven’t transferred any funds to the House because we can’t do that.”
Mr. Cowan did not comment further on the issue.
But Mr. LeBlanc disclosed further details following the Commons Question Period Thursday, when he said the system had ended.
“There’s been a total separation of resources in the sense that research resources, legislative planning resources, we now will use the resources that the House of Commons makes available to a political party,” Mr. LeBlanc said in response to questions.
“The Senate has its own resources for its own legislative function, I don’t have a list of what exactly are the amounts and so on, but I can tell you that following Mr. Trudeau’s decision, it will be the House of Commons resources assigned to the Liberal Members of Parliament that
will be used to support our legislative planning, our question period preparation, the very effective performance we put on every day in the House of Commons,” he said.
Mr. LeBlanc then said Mr. Trudeau ended the system after he won the party leadership in 2013. The two Parliamentary branches of the former Liberal caucus began sharing research resources following the 2011 federal election, after the Liberals plummeted to 34 Commons seats and lost several million dollars in staff budgets and salaries that are attached to the official opposition party in the Commons.”

  4. ‘University Affairs blogger and York University PhD student Melonie Fullick suggests that there is a widespread growth in depression amongst graduate students that is surrounded by “a thickly-oppressive silence.” Fullick cites an intense workload, pressure to produce new and valuable work, competition for full-time positions after graduation, and personal issues as contributing factors for the growth in clinical depression in the field.’
When I behold the simultaneously banal and bizarre “research” being done by doctoral students today, I wonder why they aren’t all depressed. Perhaps a number of them are struggling with the realization that they (and the supervisors they work with) are mere poseurs.

So they want to kill all the swans in the state (they’re immigrants of nearly 200 years). What happened to “diversity is our strength,” or letting the NSA set up a system to identify the ones that are a threat to jetliners?

  6. Here in Woodstock, Ontario ……..
The former Woodstock Peace Lighthouse and Studite monastery are closed and for sale signs have been posted according to a story in the QMI owned local daily rag.
Listed price is just under one and one-half million, Canadian.
The downfall of the Studite property brought on by a monk “father”with feet of clay and now in fact a real life FATHER and being sued by a former galpal of the MONK for child support.
Some legacy for Woodstock, A PEACE TOWER for a Woodstock Monk fathered child, eh?
A Woodstock Ontario “Landmark Peace Tower” and MONK Sanctuary in a palimony mess.
But believers would say that “GOD works in mysterious ways” , so hopefully the Studite Monks in charge of the brotherhood “till” wherever that is, will at least see that the monk fathered Child” will be adequately cared for in this plane of existence.
True story, folks, I am not making this up!
Woodstock Mayor Sobeski and Woodstock City council might want to consider buying the Monestary site for the “methodone” injection site instead of the downtown site where it currently blights the Woodstock City business centre.

“Justin Trudeau’s edict dissolving the Liberal Party in the Senate and proclaiming the 32 Liberals there ‘independents’ is a breathtaking confusion of stupidities.
Who is Mr. Trudeau to tell senators whether they are Liberals or not? He told reporters the newly minted independent senators would “no longer be Liberal organizers, fundraisers, activists in any form.” So the senators can no longer be members of a riding association or make political contributions or ask others to do so? Will they be barred from talking to Liberals for fear that they might give advice on organization, policy or communication? Apart from the absurd impracticality of the idea, what about the right of all Canadians to be engaged in politics as they see fit?”

“Federal Liberal members of Parliament are seeking to formally sever ties with the Senate by removing all references to senators in the party’s constitution.
Liberal deputy leader Ralph Goodale, national caucus chair Francis Scarpallegia, House leader Dominic Leblanc and House whip Judy Foote have written to Liberal Party president Mike Crawley asking the party’s national board of directors to start working to amend the constitution.
“The Constitution does identify clear roles and responsibilities for caucus which need to be adjusted to reflect our new caucus reality,” reads the letter, which was obtained from Liberal leader Justin Trudeau’s office.”
