  1. The ban was installed with very little objective critical thought (by the Harperites) which leads me to believe the fix was in and the fix was for by a special interest patron which is large enough the Tories didn’t want to tangle with – I’m thinking Sylvania or GE who now monopolize both incandescent and mercury-fluorescent lighting.

  2. I want this egregious light bulb ban lifted too but come on, pigeons are just flying rats.
    Bad graphics there.

  3. Jasen Sagman

Jason, thanks for getting back to me. I fail to see what choice there is in picking a light source that John mentions in his letter if you are removing that choice by banning the most used light source, the incandescent bulb. I am have a hard time trying to explain the CPC stance to those who question our position. If these other bulbs, CFL and LED, are such great alternatives the market would have decided the fate of the incandescent bulb and not a draconian ban.

  4. I am against gov’t over reach as much as any one in here, so I’m against any ban of this type. But when did we (conservatives ) become like the dam n lefties, becoming less wastefull on electricity use is a common sense issue, and no, that they give off heat that is usefull in some cases is NOT a valid argument. The problem that is fronted in this case is easy to over come with what is out there these days. And as Oz states, sh!t hawks (fly rats)are not worth it. Geezus, lets move on to some thing significant.

  5. I’ve never supported intrusive government prohibitions such as this, however, “Burnt by Bulb Ban” seems to be a basically dishonest description of this story. It is specifically because of the ban that this centre now has in it’s inventory a free life-long supply of 100 watt incandescent bulbs. Maybe he should have interviewed some hard-done-by Easy-bake Oven owners also.
As per the pleas to PMSH…. haven’t some of you guys figured out yet that Harper’s moves are mostly for the benefit of the CPC, not for us peon supporters? Jeepers, how much more do you need to witness?
Two years to go on a strong Conservative majority, do something conservative with this power for chrissakes, Mr. Prime Minister. As of this time, you have yet to secure my conservative vote for the next election, sir.
Here’s an idea. With the same level of enthusiasm you speak of Israel, why don’t you come out loudly against the left’s dishonest and destructive mantra “No two-tier health system”. This simple-minded “ideology” cannot survive being dragged into the light and repeatedly sh*t-kicked with facts, even with the CBC’s partisan help. Not that our health care systems are in crisis mode from coast to coast or are killing us financially, or anything. Hell, partner with a province and do a “test run” to start, if need be.
I can only come up with a few hundred more suggestions along this line, Mr. PMSH….DO SOMETHING CONSERVATIVE!

  6. NME666 so you don’t do anything that may be “harmfull” to the collective?
I don’t know about you but I’m pretty sure many people on here where buying florescent bulbs way back when they where around thirty bucks for one 15w bulb , just because they thought hydro was already expensive years ago, and way before people ever wondered how stupid people could be for not saving the planet, and comfort was found mandating life into infinity. Back then it was a free choice !
By the way how big is your computer power supply and is it green? Do we ban any power supply over 500 watts or below a certain class rating?
Why stop banning light bulbs or anything at all for that matter? Why say, “Hey time to ease up with the laws”? Who says stop, or even bothers to when people who are against a ban like a frigging light bulb, that takes away a choice, which by the way the person using the electricity pays for , then on the other hand the same people call the ban insignificant on the other?
    How progressive is that?
I guess I’m just wondering if a big enough group of people, will ever stand up for the principle and importance of having a free choice.
Which started disappearing somewhere, and I wonder which argument greased the slope?

  7. “But when did we (conservatives ) become like the dam n lefties, becoming less wastefull on electricity use is a common sense issue”
I’ll decide what is and isn’t wasteful, not some politician or bureaucrat or you.
Every 100+w light in my home has at least one $35 Lutron electronic dimmer regulating it(some have complimentary slave switches too) and when I want it dim(most times) then it is.
When I want 100-300ws ‘right now’ for whatever reason then it’s my choice. My home is my castle.
I have cases of incandescent lights in my basement that I bought when this asinine totalitarian legislation first came out and they’ll provide all I’ll need this side of the turf.
What grates is the overreach and that supposed conservative government could even contemplate signing such a law limiting consumer choice and commerce.
    Where are we living, Cuba?

  8. Hopefully this video clip will be sent to the right persons in the CONSERVATIVE government, they’re far out of sinc with their base on this one.

  9. The ban came about as a result of a couple of decades of technical studies on lighting, noting that much of the incandescent output was in heat, not light. The problem with all of these studies was a failure to consider secondary effects. In the case of incandescents, it was assumed that all of the heat produced was waste, an obviously wrong conclusion. Over the years, I’ve seen this thing all the time in EE and conservation studies, a failure to consider secondary effects.
Politicians don’t know anything about these technical issues. It’s the job of their departments to give them the best technical advice they can. Lamentably in all too many cases, that advice is seriously deficient.

  10. Occam also has a good point. Converting to CF standards was something heavily lobbied for by GE and Sylvania.

  11. Given that -all- the twisty bulbs are made in China, I have a simple question for the CPC government.
What do you boys plan on doing for lights if the Chicoms go to war with Japan and/or Taiwan? Wouldn’t it be prudent to at least be able to make light bulbs in Canada?
    Just sayin’.

  12. I want this egregious light bulb ban lifted too but come on, pigeons are just flying rats.
    Bad graphics there.

  13. As of Dec. 31/13 Ontario’s Liberal Government had built or approved 6,736 wind turbines.
He’s the numbers by county. http://windpowergrab.wordpress.com/
I’ve done the calculations myself, so the percentages may not round off to 100.
    Conservative Ridings – 4597
    NDP Ridings – 1365
Liberal Ridings – 574 (Of the 574 in Liberal Ridings 537 were in the Thunder Bay Area – Out of sight out of mind.)
To recap: In Ontario’s actual population areas (Thunder Bay is NOT a population area.)
Conservative Ridings get to look at 68.3% of these beautiful bird blenders.
NDP Ridings get to look at 20% of these monuments to Gaia.
Liberal Ridings (Other than the woods of Thunder Bay) .6%
    That’s right .6%

  14. Much fuss about nothing. You can still buy incandescent bulbs, they’re just a slightly different shape, more globe-like. One would think that your essential freedoms had been taken away. Don’t you have something realistic to complain about?

  15. Sent this to my MP on the 3rd of January…still waiting for a response:
    Dear Pierre,
As of January 1st this year, the sale of 75- and 100-watt incandescent light bulbs is prohibited by legislation. And one year from now, the same thing will happen to 40- and 60-watt incandescent light bulbs. We will be left with no choice but to buy the much more expensive halogen, LED bulbs – or the toxic compact fluorescent replacements. Every truly independent study that I have ever seen places the incandescent bulb at the top of both the economically wise and environmentally safe charts.
Pierre, this is nothing but condescending tokenism under the guise of conservation, pure and simple. You and I both know that the use of incandescent bulbs is a non-contributor to a make-believe problem dreamed up by greedy NGOs and your socialist opponents.
I wish to offer a bit of well-intentioned advice. Contrary to what your party advisors and pollsters may be saying on this issue, there is a large percentage of Canadians – the true ‘conservative’ supporters of the Conservative Party – that is still smart enough to recognize this policy for what it is: petty, irritating and totally unnecessary crap that should be left to the NDP and the Liberals.
In your own riding there are many working families and elderly people who are having great difficulties making ends meet because of soaring hydro costs that are directly attributable to “green” nonsense. Please repeal this legislation and take a bit of the financial burden off their shoulders. It will be a small (but important) thing that they will remember and thank you for.
    Yours truly,

  16. Banning old fashioned light bulbs beats the living crap out of
drilling for natural gas, building power plants and upgrading
    the power grid!
The down side is that energy prices will skyrocket.
It reminds me of the stories after the bans on CFC’s and old
    style “High flush” toilets.
At one point after the CFC ban, the trade in black market
refrigerants from Mexico actually beat out marijuana for a
    year or two.
And our friends to the North were supplying us black market
crappers for a while. Thanks neighbors! We had these worse
than useless crappers at a company I used to work for. How
much water was saved when it required 2-3 flushes to clear the
    turds out of the bowl?
Milton Friedman had it right when he said that if you put the
federal government in charge of the Sahara Desert, in 5 years
there’d be a shortage of sand.
The perfect metaphor for government, but add to that unflushed
Snickers bars in your toilet bowl, less efficient refrigerants,
650 million dollar websites that do not work and highly toxic
CFL’s that will not even offset the rising demand from population
    growth.

  17. The ban on incandescent bulbs, while not a huge issue, is emblematic of paternalistic, arrogant and corrupt governance. The citizenry are adult enough to vote for the omniscient rulers but too infantile to ascertain basic home economics of a f…..g light bulb? Pure eco-fascism disguised as (bad) technocracy. In Harper’s case it’s also monkey-see-monkey-do what the Americans have done.
Anyone not thoroughly insulted by such legislation deserves the ultimate slavery into which they are being pimped.

  18. Wouldn’t it be nice if just for *once*, there was a political party or leader that would make sensible, common sense decisions?
The bulb ban is one the dumbest, most asinine things the Cons have done so far.

  19. “The problem with all of these studies was a failure to consider secondary effects. In the case of incandescents, it was assumed that all of the heat produced was waste, an obviously wrong conclusion.”
cgh, I expect better than this from you, you usually appear to be a fairly logical poster. The loss of the “heat” from these light bulbs can be compensated for by the existing central heating system, and unless heating is via electric, and therefore reduces electricity demand. As our distribution grid is neat capacity we either reduce consumption or revamp the grid. The second option is rather expensive. Now in the summer when you air conditioner is running, these incandescent light bulbs become an unwanted heat source. So rather than upgrade a expensive grid, which may become underused in the future because of reduced demand attributed to “new” technologies the gov’t has decided on the demand reduction route. Also grid loss increase is not linear as you approach 100% capacity, so again efficiency of use becomes a factor that needs consideration, yah, I used to have to point such little matters out to the highly educated dimwits when I was a service tech.
Mugs, this may come as a shock to you, butt in any complex society the is a limit on “free choice”, because there are too many possible choices that affect too many variables that can effect a sh!t load of undesirable results. I hate to be the one to point out to you that there is, and will remain a certain level of socialisms in any and all modern societies, that’s an unavoidable fact. Things like lite source choices are minor, having your power taken away is just a little less minor, like they say don’t sweat the small sh!t”

  20. Nonsense NME666, absolute nonsense. If we are to follow your argument, then I assume you are fine with the government restricting the size of home you can build? And I assume you are fine with the government banning hot tubs? And I assume you are find with the government limiting you to one portion of beef per month?
I assume you are also fine with the government regulating the maximum temperature you can keep your home at in the winter?
And also, you must surely be fine with the government banning the sale of high-performance sports cars, and in general anything over 4 cylinders?
I assume too you are fine with the government banning the sale of bananas in Canada, after all, think of the energy consumed to transport them? The horror!

  21. And NME666, while we are at it, I think the government should most definitely put a sensor in every home – and they can start with yours – that turns off the shower after 5 minutes.
By the way, in *free* societies, when resources are scarce, their consumption is moderated largely by *pricing*, not by government interference.
And besides all of the above, I happen to *like* the light spectrum produced by incandescent bulbs. But in their infinite wisdom, the government has decided to deny me that option.

  22. Serious question, I’m curious. What advantage is there of using a light bulb instead of just a 100W heating element?

  23. I happen to *like* the light spectrum produced by incandescent bulbs. But in their infinite wisdom, the government has decided to deny me that option. Posted by: BC
That’s such extremist hyperbole, in a word: bulls#it. You will still be able to buy a wide variety of incandescent bulbs if you’re smart enough to know what to look for. Yes, stupid people will be inconvenienced, life is always tough if you’re stupid.

  24. If you choose to live in a society then you have to accept that society will enact laws and regulations designed to control the stupidest people. The sale of cheap disposable 100 watt bulbs is restricted because that’s what stupid uncaring people buy, and because those same people leave lights on and turn up the air conditioning. That causes brownouts and power shortages that effect everyone. Those who are not smart enough to figure out how to get good quality incandescent bulbs maybe shouldn’t have them. I light my home/office with a variety of light sources including incandescent, CFL, halogen and LED. Each has it’s application. Replacement bulbs where needed are readily available.

  25. north of 60 since you seem to think you know everything, tell us all where you will buy incadescents once they are all banned?

  26. And one other thing north of 60, are you saying I cannot turn up my air conditioning even if I can afford it? How is that *any* different than restricting the size of home a person can build?

  27. They’re not all banned, nor will they all be banned. Got it yet?
Try doing a little research before jumping to unfounded conclusions based on what your buddies tell you.
I’m not saying anything about what you think you can do or not.
I spoke about smart people and stupid people, you decide which shoe fits.

  28. So in other words north of 60 you don’t know where you will buy them. You are a fraud, just like the global warming fraudsters. All talk and no substance.
As for your endless childish comments about stupid people, look in the mirror. Only a fool would call others stupid yet not even be able to back up his claims with a proper answer.
Why is it so hard for you to back up your claims? What are you hiding beyond your own lies?

  29. Also north of 60, I have a Ph.D. in electrical engineering, and 25+ years of significant industry experience. So your endless rants about “stupid” people only makes me question your credibility. And since you are too scared to back up your claims, there is no point in taking anything you say too seriously.

Light. So they can go to the bathroom at night.
