Where the foxes caper unmolested, the government packs your school lunch and the Head of Politics at the University of Manchester has never heard of Preston Manning;
[Telling Fox News] that the comparison between the Tea Party and UKIP is an accurate one, and that he believes that UKIP could take the 2014 elections by storm,
“UKIP will do well in the 2014 European elections. They may even win them in terms of the popular vote. This will increase the pressure on the Conservatives.”
Yet instead of reaching out and finding middle ground, the Tories have snubbed UKIP. In 2006 David Cameron dismissed the newcomers as full of “fruitcakes and loonies and closet racists,” and top Tory Kenneth Clark recently branded them as “a collection of clowns.”
Any relation to Joe, I wonder?

This guy sounds like an ill-informed/biased, lefty, ivory tower academic.
Joe who?
We in Canada represent the colonials who do not ever enter the minds of “those who know better” in England. The Aussies do, because heaven forbid, the Aussies now revere their sainted ancestors who the English shipped off and never needed an aristocrat to guide them.
Canadians et al are really just being held in place for when the American Brahmin class takes hold and the across the pond “those who know better” will be to communicate with the British on an even level. The Scottish elites were bought off many centuries ago as the Australian Mel told all with Brave Heart.
If you want another example; check out the longest standing periodical exported from England on the world’s economy. You will be amazed to find there isn’t even a Canadian flag to represent this frozen land in their marketing efforts, whereas the Flag of Australia and many other places the British Lion either invaded or set in place with cast offs stands proud.
In fact; if you have the temerity to mention this to one of their marketing (types?) they either do not understand the situation or become offended for mentioning such a thing. Cheers;
UKIP’s Nigel Farage in debate in the Euro-Parliament is a delight to watch. He makes the other Brit politicians looks like wimps.
The Lady of the Lake’s arm rises above the water offering him the sword, Excaliber.
Delicious image. I cannot wait.
Nigel Farage is a joy to watch on his YouTube clips from the European Parl. He has a wonderful way of skewering the unelected politicians as they smirk and lower their eyes. Reminds me of Rowan Atkinson in his role as Blackadder with his rapier wit, but the smug Tories view him more as Atkinson in his Mr. Bean role.
Farage has taken at least one trip to Canada and consulted with Preston vis a vie the rise of Reform/Alliance to see what lessons could be learned.
That has to contend for the laziest journalism so far this year and there are strong contenders, especially concerning the Antarctic.
UKIP no more resembles the Tea Party than Cameron does a conservative, fact is most of us vote(d) UKIP because its the only voice against the EU, and any vote for the Cameron government would have stuck in the craw.
Farage himself, makes good hyperbole but little else, unfortunately my (prior to leaving) local MEP(UKIP) is not only well known as a loose cannon, he also appears to occupied the seat just to collect the re-numeration.
UKIP has and had a great opportunity but that was at least 15 years ago, its not going to happen, yet if it destroys the pathetic excuse for a Conservative party then that would be a good thing for Britain.
But I digress, Farage doesn’t espouse anything like Tea Party ideals, and could barely be described as conservative, possibly what used to be called progressive conservative which as far as I could see was just another name for liberal, the fact he doesn’t like the political escapade known as the EU makes him no more conservative than Anthony Wedgewood Benn who similarly had a deep distrust and dislike of the EU and its institutions but no one would ever call him Conservative.
Whilst UKIP does have some very good people and supporters, Farage is not a leader, Hannan would be better, and unlike Farage hasn’t alienated such a core of real conservatives.
Obviously the writer of the piece didn’t bother to read the UKIP manifesto, not really tea party stuff.
But hey, I have very little left in that race, wish those left well, but its going to get a lot worse.
The CBC has been trying desperately to rehabilitate “Joe Who” (whom they initially “habilitated” as the successor to Robert Stanfield). I can’t think of any political author who appeared on as many CBC programs, each of which vied with the others to out-do the tongue-baths they offered the puffed-up and puffed-out Mr Clark. These efforts appear to have been of interest, however, only to those of my contacts who are already card-carrying Justin groupies.
DSV;
Sorry to read your comments. AT some point I would like to think that the message that Manning tried to get out would do so and take root.
Manning’s successor PMSH has allowed his party to be subverted by progressives to the point that his re-election could be in doubt. Here in Canada the idea of consulting the membership consists of robo calls for more cash. This is a 24/7 exercise and I suspect is doing more to alienate the membership than anything else.
Manning expoused a grass roots democracy which was based on ‘bottom up’ versus ‘top down’ decision making. Not anymore. Town Hall meetings are no more. Membership surveys asking for opinion are no more. To be fair much of what has happened to the conservative movement started even when Manning was still involved. It appears at some point most politicans conclude that the citizen cannot be trusted to make solid choices.
“PMSH has allowed his party to be subverted by progressives to the point that his re-election could be in doubt.”
Harper sowed the seeds of this by accepting the PCs into the Reform fold after swearing he’d keep them out.
The PCs were mired in debt and had one foot in the grave and the other on a banana peel.
He only needed a little patience and the PCs would have faded away of their own accord after losing their Alberta base.
Such a waste.
