Tonight, as we get ready for tomorrow’s festivities, we listen to the dulcet tones of Midwestern boy Andy Williams as he performs an effortlessly stylish version of Frank Loesser’s romantic 1947 composition What Are You Doing New Year’s Eve?

“Please Congratulate Thomas Friedman of the New York Times for His Dumbest Quote o’ the Year Award.”
It really is the dumbest quote of the year. It has to be..
Imagine that. A government having to withstand fear-mongering and sabotage. Unprecedented! Poor Bob Rae just never ever got a fair shake. If only his government had gotten the good press and balanced response his successors had.

This is a good CBC article about gays in the “fabulous blue tent”.
Unfortunately, comments are not allowed. I’m quite sure the tolerant folks that parade their views there would rip it to shreds, and that would be amusing.
Apparently there are many gays that support the Conservative party, yet they do not wear their rainbows to attract attention. They are secure in their sexuality and do not need to be celebrated and declared special.
The article says, ” the Conservatives, fight for gay rights around the world. Baird has singled out individual countries for criticism over bills that would punish people for being gay or for fighting for gay rights.”
Keep in mind it is the CBC, they are talking about islamic countries. Kudos to the CBC for putting up the article, and the same to the Conservative gays.
I hope the screeching gay activists in Calgary and Canada take notice. They would be the ones that seek attention by attacking Christians for their beliefs but scurry back to the closet when a islamic preacher comes to town wishing death upon them.

I think I prefer the Ella Fitzgerald version:

The taxpaying workers in B.C. have to pay a logging company $1.75 million (and I presume the legal fees for all) because the gov’t did not tell the company that the valid permits that were issued for logging may be useless because the natives in the area who do not own the land may block the company from doing what they are legally entitled to do.
An 82 year old native had some traplines set up on Crown land and the loggers told them that they had to be removed. The native said no, and blocked the logging roads. This is nonsense and comes from the ‘traditional’ land decision that the Supremes bungled.

This is so logical. Iran can’t test a nuke,…..yet. But if they managed to get a prototype to N Korea……well, we can guess the rest of the story.

Hello. Cough. All y’all who took exception to my pointing out a fortnight or so ago that the late great Peter O’Toole was from Leeds (which he totally was) – I have just found the perfect comeback. Belated, yes, but therefore a fine example of Esprit de Jerkstore*.
The Duke of Wellington, who before defeating Napoleon was born in Dublin, on the subject of whether he considered himself Irish: “Being born in a stable does not make one a horse.”
Hah! Hahhah!

(Also, O’Toole may well in fact have been born in Leeds. And his mother was Scottish. And anyway why should being English be treated like leprosy? As EBD has pointed out, even Scandis can have feelings, which should be a lesson in humanity for all of us, especially in this holiday seasonv8j.)
PeterJ, thanks for posting that link. A bit worrisome for me living in S. central BC as it means that a lot more people are going to move into the province and I’m going to have to give serious thoughts about giving up medicine and working on one of these projects to make some real money. A patient of mine had immediate resolution of his depression when he found that he could make $240 K/year as a machinist working in N. Alberta. It means prices which are already quite high in BC are going to go up. Look for outraged people in the eastern provinces livid because people have to move to a barbaric redneck portion of the country to find work and how a high Canadian dollar will wipe out the last few Ontario manufacturing jobs that have miraculously survived that provinces bird blender policy. The dreadful economic effects of these projects are just too horrendous to contemplate as it will result in monstrously high wages for trailer trash that will just waste this money on large polluting trucks and massive houses that are far larger than any person (aside from Dr. Fruitfly) needs. These same individuals will have massive carbon footprints as they fly around the world raising airplane ticket prices making it harder for individuals truly concerned about the environment to attend conferences in exotic locales and the watermelons will have to share deserted beaches with beer swilling knuckle-dragging Albertan rednecks.
At least BC will have something to replace the lost income from its cannabis crops given that the bottom has fallen out of the cannabis market now that Washington state has legalized the stuff. And we can’t forget that carbon tax that will really start raking in the dough as global temperatures plummet.

Apropos of Kate’s post about NY Mayor-elect Bill de Blasio’s vow to abolish horse-drawn carriages in Central Park (and throughout NYC), here’s a relevant passage from Russell Taylor’s “We Are the Radicals Now” at the Ludwig von Mises Institute:
It’s a good essay — read the whole thing.

“The independent journalist and security expert said on Monday that the NSA could turn iPhones into eavesdropping tools and use radar wave devices to harvest electronic information from computers, even if they weren’t online…Another slide showcased a futuristic-sounding device described as a “portable continuous wave generator”, a remote-controlled device which – when paired with tiny electronic implants – can bounce invisible waves of energy off keyboards and monitors to see what is being typed, even if the target device isn’t connected to the internet.”
