My intention was not to cause pain but to visibilize the necessity of honoring all human life and to help a friend heal from the violence of genocide that she carries with her on a daily basis as an indigenous person. While the American flags on the Middlebury hillside symbolize to some the loss of innocent lives in New York, to others they represent centuries of bloody conquest and mass murder. As a settler on stolen land, I do not have the luxury of grieving without an eye to power. Three thousand flags is a lot, but the campus is not big enough to hold a marker for every life sacrificed in the history of American conquest and colonialism.
The emails filling my inbox indicate that this was not a productive way to start a dialogue about American imperialism. Nor did I imagine that it would be. Please understand that I am grappling with my complicity in the overwhelming legacy of settler colonialism. Part of this process for me is honoring the feelings and wishes of people who find themselves on the other side of this history.

These brainless morons are committing theft and, were there any individuals who had placed the flags in the grounds with any balls, they would have gone up to the beached whale from Canada and asked her politely to return their flag. Had she refused, they would announce that they were making a citizens arrest and then use whatever force necessary to get her to return the stolen property. If the writer is so conflicted with his guilt he can do the honourable thing and off himself and leave some space for those who wish to live in the present. Oral history has never been worth the paper its printed on, and last I looked, North America had at least two, maybe even three, colonizations before either the vikings or modern Europeans got here. Certainly, the “first nations” were especially quick to appreciate the influx of European technology, especially firearms, for the purpose of armed conflict with their “brethren”. The bow passed from common usage in less than 30 years aomng FN and the tribes were some of the best customers of eurobusiness.

I would qualify that statement by saying leftists hate the America that existed prior to the politically deconstructed hull we have now. Like all lefty pet peeves this one is steeped in fantasy. They hollowed out the political system decades ago and the economic system was left to function in the uber-taxed/regulated post-constitutional USSA is crony capitalism and kleptonomics – a monopolist/oligopolist shadow of true free market capitalism and demand economics.
