Why this blog?
Until this moment I have been forced to listen while media and politicians alike have told me "what Canadians think". In all that time they never once asked.
This is just the voice of an ordinary Canadian yelling back at the radio -
"You don't speak for me."

I hope this is not about putting a brave face on a bad situation….
Damn CRTC.
Tough to go up against O’Reilly in the same time slot. At least for now.
I hope SunNews didn’t do this too soon with Bill O going further to the left all the time, Fox ratings will continue to fall and Charles would be the next and obvious default.
Change is a part of life, but sometimes it “sucks”, as the kids say.
Charles was taken off my local radio station just a few weeks ago — the entire station was rejigged on orders from Toronto, apparently — and replaced with inane chips & giggles. I was really PO’d. I used to schedule my driving errands around Charles’ show, but I don’t even listen to the station anymore. My new slogan is ABC – “Anything But Corus.”
Rutherford, too, has been replaced by a former Liberal MLA, and the entire new lineup is ‘hip’ and ‘edgy’, and sounds vaguely like CBC radio.
I look forward to seeing Charles in a different capacity on Sun News, but I sure wish I could listen to him on the radio too.
Adler was the least favourite of mine of the prime time line up. Got tired of him interviewing guests that sounded like himself on the issues. Most of the prime time line up was like that anyway, but less so. The others seem to get into debates with guests who didn’t share their views. I honestly can’t remember the last time I saw Adler interview a contrarian.
And advice for SNN… please, PLEASE change the format for Coren’s show. Bring in the big round table and have 3, possibly even 4 guests, just like his old show on CTS — one that a truly miss. And do his show from Levant’s studio. Coren’s show just has a night-feel to it, with the downtown Toronto skyline as the backdrop, just like it was on CTS. Also, going back to Coren’s old format would break up the string of the host featured in a box on one side of the screen and the guest in the other.
If it’s the fault of CRTC, why do I have a Neepawa station (very poor quality) in my line-up?
Damn. I hope there aren’t too many changes and, please God, not one more female voice.
Well, I for one will miss Charles as a regular, but looking forward to seeing what his new role will be.
Frank, I have noticed that also.
EBD, me too. I miss Charles in the pm on our 650 Saskatoon radio, and if I am listening to the radio I switch to FoxNews. It is not the lady, but I can’t stand the sanctimonious narcissistic liberal co-host.
I don’t listen to QR 77 anymore either when I am on the road through Alberta. There are more than enough CBC types as it is.
Ken, I listened to QR for years, even when Rutherford developed the chubby for Danielle alone instead of trying to bring the conservatives back to being conservative, he still made a little more sense than this drivel now. Corus has sold out to the Toronto Star obviously, the morning show is nothing more than CFCN’s “Problem Corner” from the early 60’s, listened for 3 days and thank god I kept my sattellite, and to stick that little condecending circumcision Taylor back on instead of Adler, was the last straw, that little Toronto dweeb couldn’t spank a baby bunny and still thinks he is taking on the world, bla bla bla, same 3 and out. They had a guy on called John Boulton after they fired Rutherford, who was quite good, to good I guess, it is an obvious design to dumb down Alberta, trying for Toronto west, give it up, won’t work here, but we might trade a leftie mayor for a penny pinching beer swiller.
Agree!
The Michael Coren show on CTS was a better set up. The interviews were more indepth, more interactive and interesting. The Area is not bad but it pales in comparison to his old show.
Didn’t watch Adler, but wish him the best in whatever he does next.
Was there an “understanding” between the Liberal CRTC and Sun News during the past bureaucratic ruling?
QR77 in Calgary has lost Dave Rutherford and Adler over the last month or so.
The replacement for Rutherford is a ‘cute’ couple (Kelly and Kincaid) and Adler has been replaced by Liberal lite ‘Dave Taylor’.
I don’t know if they have picked up anyone to replace this former listener.
Maybe Sun is thinking of having Rutherford on? 😉
I particularly liked Charles as his family experiences in some ways were similar to those of our family. In his case it was Nazis and communists and in our case it was communists, in short socialists in any uniform.
It is obvious that Corus has been turned. I am surprised that Gormley is still on.
I tuned into charles Adler on CJOB yesterday morning. He was announcing he will be on every morning from 9am to noon.
Can’t say I listened much to Addler – always seemed prone to understatement to me – just the same with him and Rutherford gone I smell a purge of conservative values at chorus radio – it’s off my listening list now – Canada is now devoid of any true conservative voice on talk radio – perhaps Lowell Green but that is a limited market.
I’ll be watching the LPC corporate doners list for Chorus or one of its affiliated companies.
Lowell Green is a gem,he does his homework and has a grasp of the subjects he talks about be it politics, the environment or anything else, it’s not just his opinion, it’s facts. Listening to him keeps the listener well informed on current goings on in politics at all levels.
You can’t imagine how happy I was, on moving from Alberta to Ontario 8 years ago, to find John Oakley on AM640. Actually I’m sure you can imagine it.
How ironic that in Alberta Rutherford is gone, while in the Liberal wasteland of Toronto, Oakley seems to be on a roll. I still feel a sense of gratitude whenever I hear his show.
I said at the outset of Sun TV news that they would fail if they did not address the lack of depth in the broadcast production team.
Adler is not anything more than a journeyman on air voice, who without any real production support had little to contribute other than his ability to bloviate and an occasional inspired rant. Not that getting rid of him is going to help but rather add to the fundamental weakness of the production group.
Sun pinned their hopes on a weak foundation and that is now crumbling.
Is SNN rearranging the deck chairs just in case the ship goes down?
They desperately need to get on basic cable,I can’t see them lasting much longer if they don’t.
Never warmed up to Adler, for the reasons stated by “Jon”. Coren’s show needs a change, maybe as suggested above.
Ezra is very good as always, the only Reporter that seems to investigate and get to the true story.
We should nominate him for the O.o.C. for his work on Teresa Spence alone, and he,(along with Vivian Krause),is the only Reporter in Canada who follows the money with the anti-tar/oil sands movement.
Jon (11:01), I hope they don’t change the format. If Coren’s show reverted to the in-person round-table discussion format of his old CTS show it would necessarily become much more Toronto/Upper Canada-centric, inasmuch as any guests from the west would have to take a day or two off of their jobs, and be flown in, and put up in a hotel, etc., which is an unrealistic prospect not just for certain guests, but for a daily show at what is still a fledgling network.
Ontarian voices, and western meat-puppet outposts of same on regional affiliates, are already massively overrepresented on TV. The real strength of SNN is that its shows aren’t overlaid with that GTA/OPG attitude; unlike the CBC and CTV, it’s a truly national network that gives voice to non-union, western, blue-collar and rural perspectives. If Coren’s show was an in-person, sitting around the table show with guests (mostly, inevitably) from Ontario it would lose some of that.
The other reason I prefer the format of his SNN show (times a thousand) is that on his CTS show he was functioning as a moderator of a group discussion, which (necessarily) made him overly-deferential towards guests like Syd Ryan and Judy Rebbick. He’s still commendably respectful towards his guests, but on SNN he gets a lot more room to deliver his own views. This is a good thing because Coren’s unapologetically Anglospheric/western focus is an historic (in my adult lifetime, at least) singularity in Canadian broadcasting. When he interviews Tommy Robinson of the EDL, for example, he doesn’t try to artificially “balance” the interview by trotting out the usual rote, Upper-Canada establishment arguments against people like Robinson, perhaps because he fully understands that the scales are already heavily – unanimously — weighted against such entirely reasonable but massively unpopular/un-pc views as Robinson’s, which are anathema to the (non-SNN) royal “We” media in this country.
If Robinson had been one of the guests on his CTS show, the other already overrepresented and perpetually outraged “you can’t say that!”/”you’re a nazi!” voices would have drowned him out, while the smartest man in the room would have been in the position of moderating the proceedings, as he tried to take, and restate, and mediate, the points of every guest.
I think of his CTS show as the place where he got his TV “legs”, but his Sun News show is more compelling and valuable, IMO.
Watch SNN a lot and enjoy Ezra, Lilley and the group. Find Ezra will interrupt his guests a lot with his own comments disrupting their input. Just as a topic gets interesting its over. Would love to see the bottom ticker tape reflect current news, weather and other topics as other news like CP24 does. Is an hour too long for most people for one commentator?
Hope SNN survives as it is the only station that delves into topics fairly extensively. There are lots of lefties that would prefer it dies.
How about Warren Kinsella, is he still their voice for the Liberals?
Maybe Adler can read the writing on the wall and just wants to get out of this doomed enterpise? SNN needs to be put out of its misery.
Why?
It’s not very good. Very annoying obnoxious style…Ezra…
Charles Adler has some life’s experience.
He’s not naive. He’s not easily intimidated. He’s capable of articulating his position at a moments notice.
He cares deeply for the public, for the citizenry. His family being a refugee from the old Soviet block gives him an appreciation of the value of liberty.
Compared to the pablum on CBC and CTV, he is a heavy hitter.
He understands the concept and value of Western Exceptionalism.
(So does Putin, he simply disagrees with it. 🙂
SunnewsTV needs a larger budget and that will come, hopefully soon, but Charles, Ezra, Michael, John, Brian and the others are heavy hitters.
They are frontline troops in defense of the heritage of Canadian liberty.
I think Kory Teneycke being from rural Saskatchewan brings some of the prairie populist instinct. There is a passion behind the SunnewsTV project and it shows.
Quebecor, who funds them does us all a great service with this project. We owe those behind this a debt.
Even now, Sun News is punching above it’s weight.
While we are on Sun News – I rarely watch it any longer. Their female on air personalities have voices that are best suited to silent movies – alternatively very grating or screeching. Could either take or leave Adler. Really like Ezra, especially when he is dishing it out to the left in a major story.
Poor LAS.
Like them all, though prefer Coren, Lilley, and Levant to Adler – still miss the little red-headed guy that used to do business reporting/economics etc. – never did hear what happened to him. The girls are all eager and perky (perhaps too much so) and maybe a little too amateurish. However they’re not afraid to confront anything or anyone. Here on the west coast, the show keeps blacking out for extended periods (suspicious) and some of the introductory themes are nothing but irritating. Still I watch it constantly, and have got most of the cranky old farts watching (I live in an over-55 building). Let’s face it, there is a lot of garbage on the telly, and I tend to watch too much COPS and Storage Wars, so you can tell that talent shows and drama, and bloody horror shows attract a different generation of viewers.
Like EBD I also have had the privilege of listening to the now obsolete Dave Rutherford in the mornings and Charles Adler for the afternoons. Alberta radio now officially sucks.
My work environment is worse, since I have had to try and find other AM stations to listen to(not easy in the middle of no-tower Alberta). Yes, CBC finally has been ventured to.
My wife asked me today if I was managing without Rutherford and Adler, sounds extreme but them 2 became friends to me sitting in heavy equipment. Over a decade of diligent “tuning in”.
All I can say is Uncle Chuck rocks! He speaks for those of us who are here in Canada of European decent and haven’t been afflicted by Stockholm’s Syndrome.
I can only be thankful that I can still get a portion of his airings on Podcast. Does anyone have suggestions for other good Canadian right wing podcasts?
As far as SNN goes, we do not have cable.
Joel, all I can suggest is that you check out John Gormley on Saskatoon’s CKOM via podcasts. I often find him better prepared on stories than Rutherford was – Dave was winging it at times. I, too, regret losing Charles in the afternoons in Sask and AB. Don’t understand why.
Sorry, unclear message. What I meant was – I don’t understand why they took him off the air.
Obviously change is coming to SNN and according to Kory Teneycke the future
looks good. What I have noticed is that SNN advertising base is becoming much larger and more mainstream so their bottom line must be getting better.
When they first came on air they had Dr. Ho as advertiser and not much else. I note they now have 100,000 friends on facebook which I’m sure helps when selling advertising.
As far as Rutherford and Adler are concerned I’m sure activist leftists have
engaged in a campaign to have both removed from Corus radio because they hate
the message so they want the messenger eliminated. I submit everyone who
wants these guys back on prime time should engage in a letter writing exercise to accomplish that. I expect we will see Adler back on SNN is some capacity.
Just my hunch, but I think Liz just hit the nail on the head with a hammer.
But then, I’m writing this way down the page long after this has scrolled under the fold.
I think Kinsella will be taking over Adlers spot.
No more Adler Show!!!!! Tell me it ain’t so. My local talk radio station took his show off a couple of months ago and I quit tuning it in. His replacement was so bad that the show was …….., sorry I can’t think of a word adequately horrific enough to describe it.
I hope this is not all a sign that SUN is going soft and mushy, might I risk saying CBCish, in hopes of attracting greater numbers of viewers. The suggestion by a couple in this thread that Kinsella may take this spot makes me ill. I watch SUN to get away from the “feel good pablum” of the left and Kinsella is just ‘left wing light’.
I’m beginning to think that an internet based right wing program should be introduced. A Canadian version of PJ Media or Breitbart. I don’t believe the CRTC would have any control over it, but I am sure they would try. And no doubt the left would be working hard to stifle free speech.
