If the Saudis invested everything they could spare into US shale, could they significantly distort the market?
I wonder if there’ll be chirping on the left about this? Something to the effect of .. “Shale oil risks global security because the US can take unilateral military action without disrupting their oil supply.”

Sasquatch is right. The Saudis don’t like Keystone XL and they don’t like Northern Gateway either. Both serve to add more non-OPEC oil into the international oil market.

But, where do the Saudis’ stand on electric cars? And, and, and solar energy and wind power? And nuclear energy. Aren’t these things are threat to their oil business? And don’t they even CARE about global warming? Oh never mind.

Not to worry, barry will get them Obama phones and put them all on food stamps courtesy of the American Taxpayer.

Wouldn’t Saudi Arabia (and countries in that geographic location)be the ones to benefit from solar-generated power? Realistically, what’s the loss of covering miles and miles of non-arable desert with a bunch of mirrors?

Hence the Saudis have good reason to fear the day that the infidels become self-sufficient in energy and run out of reasons not to get serious about fighting Islam. If done properly, the outcome will be the destruction of Islam as a military and political force in a matter of hours, the reduction of the cities of the Islamic world to highly radioactive ash, and the loss of absolutely nothing of value.

It is bad for the Alberta oil sands, unless the extraction technology there can be made less expensive. Oil sands oil is currently considerably more expensive than shale oil. The consequences may not be overly pleasant. The Keystone XL pipeline is probably a moot issue now. China may well continue in its desire for oil sands oil, as it may be excluded from Bakken oil. Fortunately, the Bakken does extend into SK.
Bell Island, NL is instructive in this regard. It is just outside of St. John’s BTW. It was a major source of iron ore for perhaps 60 years. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bell_Island
Cheaper, surface sources of iron ore were found, and that was pretty much the end of Bell Island. There is still plenty of iron ore there, but it is no longer economical to mine. Bell Island is now little more than a picturesque dormitory suburb of St. John’s.
