  1. Because who knows; you may actually have pride in your country; which according to the politically correct dweebs is a negative attribute.

  2. I wonder what would be complicated enough for Mr. Shulan? You can’t have people setting out the American Flag above the rubble–which to me is a pretty heartfelt response to the attack and the determination to rebuild. I suppose Shulan would prefer images of the barbarians celebrating in the streets. I wonder if that would be nuanced enough for him.

  3. Like with anything of value in the West today, you just knew the left was going to ruin the museum with their “enlightened contrarianism”. This, coupled with the admission price, which is up in the stratosphere, has sealed the deal on me not ever visiting. I paid my respects to the site a half dozen times since 9/11. Good enough for me.

  4. Having just spent a week in the belly of the beast as it were, I’m not even faintly surprised. The people -in- New York City are a completely different culture from the people who live -around- the city. New Yorkers feel besieged and threatened by the barbarian hordes of uncultured hillbillies who live in the uncharted wilds… of Dutchess County. An hour north of the city.
Basically your average New York liberal doesn’t considered himself to be an American. His entire universe stops at the Hudson River, the rest of the country is Terra Incognita. Anything with an American flag on it is jingoistic propaganda in extremely bad taste. Strictly for lower class rubes.
Going to be entertaining when the infrastructure that keeps NYC alive finally breaks. Whole lot of snobbish morons will be getting a huge wake up call.
By the way, following the disastrous hurricanes and storms of the past winter, with the flooding and the massive power outages and the no gasoline for two weeks… there are no work crews cutting trees next to power lines, no projects to control flood waters, and nobody is trimming the overgrown foliage next to the roads. The complete NY government response to the emergencies is: -nothing-. They’re doing -nothing- and spending billions doing it.
Don’t send any disaster relief money to NY the next time Something Bad happens. Its a waste of your time. The smart people upstate will be fine, who cares about the freakin’ liberals? To quote James T. Kirk: “LET them die!”

  5. Decline and Fall or Crash and Burn. Or whichever comes first.
“Americans have been voting themselves money since LBJ’s Great Society. According to the Federal Reserve, the nation’s unfunded liabilities stand at over $125 trillion, including Medicare ($86.6 trillion), prescription drugs ($21.8 trillion) and Social Security ($16.4 trillion), which amount does not include the $16.8 trillion current U.S. Treasury debt. These entitlement programs were sold to the public as “pay as you go” and were supposed to build surpluses to balance already known future demographic shifts. But leaders in both major parties invaded these programs’ current income (from payroll taxes) to win votes by financing discretionary programs such as farm supports, food stamps, weapon systems, student loans, housing-loan guarantees, green-energy subsidies and literally hundreds of other spending initiatives—all for political constituencies capable either of making contributions or putting political boots on the ground.”

  6. At the heart of it is moral cowardice and the physical manifestation that follows. For as long as they can get away with it by hiding behind those who will fight for the good that is their country, Shulan and his ilk will excuse themselves as too clever, too educated, too civilised, too humane to participate in simple-minded and brutish patriotism. Then when there is no one left to fight for their safety and comfort they will advocate outright surrender and try to worm their way back up to comfortable sinecures in the society imposed by the conquerors. It is a part of human nature that has been in us through all of human history.

  7. You only need two pictures: that one…and another one of Bin Laden’s bullet-riddled corpse being eaten by hogs.

  8. It’s quite sad that important decisions like this are being made a wingnuts whom are totally detached from what the people want. “Don’t give them want they want, they’re too stupid to know what they need.”

  9. Who do the likes of Michael Shulan get into privileged positions like that? Answer: Leftist/Liberals stick together like a bad foot fungus. They party together, they sleep together, they breed together, and they think together … in absolute unison. His views are so obscure compared to the majority of Americans yet somehow he got such an important job. What a disgrace.

  10. Yeah well, difficulty adjusting to change is not just limited to seniors with new e-mail addresses.
I have observed this isolationism not just in NYC but also New Orleans, Chicago, London UK, GTA, …..it didn’t start recently.
It seems a trait of large urban areas….the leftism as well.
It seems a historical pattern….leading to decline…to be over-run/conquered by the perceived barbarians from the hinterlands.
As far as patriotism, the US military long ago realized that unit cohesion/loyalty was a much more powerful emotion than patriotism….and patriotism revolved around the military.
Generally the military’s, subconscious, mission is not to die for their country but to make the enemy die for theirs….and protect their own.
We used to say…We, the willing, have done so much, for the ungrateful, for so long and for so little…we can now do anything with nothing.
    Tain’t right, tain’t wrong,….just is…

  11. This is what happens when intellectualizing an event that is straight forward as the article mentioned.
You start being a wise guy, constantly screw yourself deeper and deeper into the verbal diarrhea. Then, fully impressed with yourself you go and pronounced the intellectualized sheet as though you are Obama or something.
By the way, the composition of the picture seem to have certain Rockwellian flavor.

  12. But the proper memorial to the twin towers would have been to rebuild them bigger and higher.
But here is the Free World, half a generation later, pissing around with pictures.

  13. Why would the power structure want constant reminder the public were let down by a trillion dollar air defense perimeter. The old complaint about where’s a cop when you actually need one – on a mammoth scale –

  14. Yeah, those New Yorkers, what with all the money they make and contribute to the rest of the country. They’re just a buncha dumb lazies!!!!
    http://www.economist.com/blogs/dailychart/2011/08/americas-fiscal-union
“New York transferred over $950 billion to the rest of America’s fiscal union from 1990 to 2009.” (And yes… a significant portion of that probably came from NYC).
Incidentally, guess who gets more federal dollars? Blue states or red states?
    http://www.economist.com/blogs/dailychart/2011/08/americas-fiscal-union
So yeah… them thar limp wristed liebrals had better just shut their damned mouths and keep on paying up, or the red states are gonna totally freak out and maybe start contributing to the economy or somethin.

  15. I guess its like the holocaust – if enough people deny that it actually happened then what is stopping it from happening again? If enough people deny that the World Trade Centres had 2 planes fly into them – well what the heck is stopping it from happening ……………..

  16. John you are such a frickin moron it’s astounding. Two major storms and they’re not even trimming trees John. That’s liberalism on a plate. Who’s the bad guy in your mind? Me.
    Genius.

  17. In a memorial to an event, Mr. Shulan would like to censor images from that event. Those men raising the flag…They were THERE. At the actual event, not just at the talking heads post mortem of the event. They raised that flag because it was important to them. And those men are very, very important to the accurate telling of the tale. They are the ones who ran towards the collapsing buildings, not away from them. Because of their actions, they earned the right to be a significant part of the narrative which is to be told. I can not imagine how to explain their values to someone like Mr. Shulan, or why their values need to be celebrated and not merely tolerated. I love Robert’s comment re. foot fungus – it accurately explains how people like Mr. Shulan end up in positions of influence. What a contrast – the actions of men who risked all, compared to someone who wants to hide the very values which prompted their actions. I believe it was C.S. Lewis who penned the phrase “men without chests” to describe the mocking, derisive products of our education systems. The description fits the mindset of Mr. Shulan.

  18. Dennis Prager spent the first hour of his radio show talking about this subject. A fellow called up and explained precisely what the word “kitschy” means: art that appeals to the lower classes of society and is not very sophisticated.
So Mr. Shulan, and undoubtedly his fellow comrades in the Cultural Left, find the photograph of the firemen and the American flag too “kitschy”. But, as Prager noted, these same people think that Andy Warhol’s painting of Campbell’s soup cans to be utter genius. Ditto, I’m sure, of their views of the “Piss Christ” display.
Complete & utter hacks, all of them!
