  4. The piece’s author makes just about the worst analogy ever.
    For Jolie, the upside is probable prevention of cancer, the downside is some loss of quality of life that may have been preventable. Both of these are experienced by her personally, no one else.
    For action against AGW, the upside might be improved air quality if every country in the world signed on (which they won’t, or don’t have to do), while the downside could be a massive decline in quality of life for everyone in humanity, with the death toll potentially in the millions due to the end of modern conveniences.

  22. Probabilities should be weighed against the reliability of the science and its data. For instance the IPCC’s prediction of a “pause” in CAGW was below 5 percent. Yet here we are with 15 or so years of no statistically significant warming despite no slowdown in CO2 emissions. Extreme weather is not outside of norms. There are no climate refugees and extinctions have not increased. New studies indicate that ice sheets are more stable than previous estimates and therefore sea rise is very modest. Climate sensitivity predictions are being revised down. The planet is greening up not burning up.
    The only negative effect of CAGW seems to be that the political, social and economic policies are making businesses, people and nations poorer while making business class environmentists richer. A massive transfer of wealth from the lower/middle class to the rich and well connected.
    When assessing real observations of cause and effect instead of models the result of current CO2 policies and the reliability of the science look very different than what the alarmists want us to see. One would have to be quite foolish to accept any more recommendations based on the current accuracy and precision of the CAGW alarmists

    What the hell is mental wealth? Could it be lets scare the little kids at school by telling them unless they live in caves they will die.
    So their argument is down to this. This lady took the results of a test that said maybe might and could but we do not have any proof that it will and we should shut everything down. That pretty well sums up the depth of their – your a denier for not believing – complete lack of any proof theory.

    I have had a mastectomy and did so after a few biopsies on both breasts and a lumpectomy. I would gladly have had the other one removed because I’ve also had colon cancer in the neck of a polyp.
    That Jolie (as a mother, and a human being) wants to avoid a very real risk considering her family history is her business and hers alone. She also has the worry of uterine cancer at a young age.
    My granddaughter has crippling migraines which could be partially eased with hormonal treatment but it has been ruled out because of my cancer and also because her maternal grandmother had two different kinds of breast cancer.
    She could take the treatment and not get breast cancer, but with three children, does she want to take the risk? No.
    Rant all you want about the article and AGW, but leave decisions to have mastectomies out of it. Doug’s comment at 10.36 is more than disgusting.

  29. So what the article is saying is that every time a crack pot comes up with a set of doomsday data we should all run out and cut off a part of our body? I hope the author doesn’t mind too much if I tell him to get stuffed. For one thing I act on good data not just data that someone dug out of a tree ring somewhere. Taking in all the data available not just the doomsday stuff we are quite correct to do nothing to avert a climatastrophy. A man made one/man averted one just isn’t in the cards.

  32. The article was wrong on so many levels. Skepticism is essential to science, while faith in “consensus” is a corruption of science. The same official data has been shown by so-called skeptics that there has been no GW for the last 15 years while the GW modelers / rent seekers can’t predict the past let alone the future. Jolie’s (a Republican) actions reflected rational and somewhat gutsy weighing of risk probabilities which cannot be equated with the economic/political band wagon of CAGW.

  33. Essig’s column is crap. The CAGW scam is not primarily built upon data, but upon the opinion held about that data by a select class of scientists and activists.
    The actual data, once the falsified data are removed, do show a slight warming through the 1990s, which has since halted, if not reversed. There is nothing in the data that is inconsistent with the null hypothesis, namely that there is no AGW “signal” and that temperature variations are natural and cyclical.
    Climate skeptics are not opposed to data, as long as the data are real, and not falsified or massaged beyond all recognition. We are opposed to false interpretations of that data.
    Remember, the climate scam came first, then data were collected in an effort to support it, which is the exact opposite of the way science is supposed to be done. In the 1970’s the climate scammers were mongering the fear of a new Ice Age; the cure was to stop using hydrocarbon fuels. Fast-forward to the 1990’s, the new bogie is catastrophic global warming; the cure, stop using hydrocarbon fuels. Mirror-image “disasters” have the exact same cure. What’s up with that?

  37. It was a joke, gellen, -heavy smoker – all about the adjective, ‘heavy’. Lighten up! I have lived through two concussions, a brain aneurysm, a ‘hit and run’; I was the walking ‘hit’ the criminal in the vehicle ‘ran’ – driver was never caught, I was left to die from multiple wounds and broken bones on the side of the trans Canada Highway. I lived because three railroad workers stopped when they saw my shadow in the ditch.
    I guess Jolie is brave because she does not smoke and ‘stink’ (as You say I do even though you have never met me!). Most people do not think I am a fat slob because I walk and ride a two wheeler to keep my broken knee and back from seizing up – my knee cap was sliced off , I have a dime sized knee cap and have had it since I was 21 years old – it works because I made/make it work.
    The Dr. who operated on the brain Aneurysm I had 10 years later, that I developed from the concussion in the H&R, suggested that I resume smoking to stop the insane headaches I had post -op. Tobacco stopped the blind pain. The same pain still returns to my head when I deprive myself of tobacco. I choose to smoke and I might choose to smoke if I had never had an Aneurysm just to rattle the cages of the ‘oh so self righteous’. Put that in your pipe and pass it to someone like me so it can be smoked and enjoyed.

And in case you think that I got a big settlement from the gument gellen – no that did not happen as my corrupt lawyer waited until after the 1974 BC election to file a claim for me – dippers won and enforced ICBC ‘no fault’ insurance. The criminal driver (who stole my money before he ‘ran’) would have been represented by the BC government under the Socreds and I would have been able to claim some of the $$ my family and I incurred for therapy etc. You may believe that I had ‘Poetic Justice’ because I smoke tobacco, you will be glad to know that nobody helped me except my brothers and my parents. I was not overweight at the time.

    I actually wasn’t targeting you at all but used your comment as an example of what it would be like to be at the end of one of Kate’s jolly barbs.
    Don’t kick yourself around so much as you’re attributing thoughts to me I haven’t, and wouldn’t, have. Now that I’ve read your story, you’re an inspiration to many I’m sure, as Jolie has obviously been to many women with the same concerns.
    Your particular situation is on a whole new level, of course, and I’m amazed at your strength. God bless!

  41. I am an inspiration to nobody, gellen, as I just lived through these times as anyone who does not have a public ‘focus'(like a certain Ms. Jolie has); I tried to disguise the accident damage as much as I could so that I could get a job and keep my friends.
    Nobody, in his/her right mind wants to hire a mental/physical cripple because the latter is a liability (in the real world). I refused to talk about either for many years because I did not want false pity. Most people who knew told me I was ‘lucky’ to have lived – it had nothing to do with luck, IMO – it had to do with God’s Will – my recovery was my own will. I am better off than the soldiers who came home from WWI; many of those young men lived in bath tubs for the rest of their days because they had been burned with mustard gas. I have lived a lot better than the millions of people in the soviet union who were beaten and starved in gulags….and Jolie is no hero to me.

  43. I read somewhere that while Angelina Jolie had a specific Gene sequence that was tied to breast cancer, that in fact your chances of getting cancer just because you have the DNA are very small. Most of what influences the development of tumors is environment/exposure. If this were not the case, hospital workers would not leave the room for x-rays.
    In short, Jolie’s boobies were lost because some doctor had a poor understanding of statistics, and passed on that stupidity to his/her patient.

    I will suggest that the truth is that rather than have her current mammalry glands removed and replaced, the surgeon removed enough to insert the augmentation. The augmentation in question being the unwritten standard among the Hollyweird elite. This was just the story her publicist came up with.

    Good point, Jeremy, and I hope it wasn’t a factor here. I’d wager most MDs haven’t a strong grasp of Bayes’ Rule; and it’s critical when talking about statistics and probabilities of having diseases based on tests. Disclosure: I’m not a doctor, Jim, I’m an engineer. But I know statistics, and I’m also a Bayes groupie. It’s relevant any time a doctor talks to you about test results and the probability that you may have a condition or disease.
    Gellen, I’m sorry to hear about the ordeals you went through. Cancer is horrible, and I know what it’s like to lose a loved one to it. Having said that, however, I’ll venture that many of the posts in this thread to which you took offense were less a shot at jolie and her incredible decision and more at the leftist idiocy that would author a premise as was found at Forbes. The article was so lunatic and rife with fallacies and wrong-headed thinking the author deserves all the derision as could be thrown his way. I’d include myself in those who piled on to the moronic article, but wouldn’t venture an opinion on jolie’s extreme pre-emptive strike to prevent cancer, other than I couldn’t imagine a tougher decision (considering her profession), and I wish her well, irrespective of her politics.
    You might have been a bit closer to the issue than most, and it bit deeply, is all. I rather doubt most of the posters here are as cavalier as you might have thought on something as deadly serious as this issue. Just my 50¢, of course.
