…
One of the student panelists grabbed the microphone out of turn and handed it to a line of protestors who delivered speeches that condemned the “liberal script” in the name of “radical, emancipatory change” and “institutional transformation.” Afterwards, my classmates defended their behavior because they were smashing “hegemonic power structures” and “flipping the power dynamic.”..
All of this is on video, which some classmates have posted online, exulting in the evidence of how they spoke truth to power. Meanwhile, my peers have derided me on blogs and Facebook. One accused me of “pernicious, destructive, far-reaching silencing.”
…The day after disrupting the open board meeting, the protesters insisted on mandatory campus “teach-ins” for all students. Though it was the day before exams at a school that prides itself on its academic rigor, the administration acquiesced and endorsed the teach-ins to heal our “fractured community.”
Each attendee received a list of student “demands,” which included making courses in ethnic studies and gender and sexuality required for graduation…

At some point in time someone discovered how to create fire at will and control it. Everyone since has benefited from this and understood it to be good. Except for today where we have people who think it is the sum of all evil. Talk about evolving backwards.
That the US elite put up with this portends the ruin of the US. Or, more likely (as the US will be a difficult country to take down) its fragmentation.
Parents should say “no”, of course. Eventually it will be Chinese parents who say “no” to US excess and fatuity.
The parents should be ashame of themselves but they are too stupid to realize they are the part of problem.
The adults in that room should be ashamed of themselves. Pathetic.
Don’t forget,Canuckguy, most of the parents of these “students” went through the same “edumaction” system.
Cass Elliott gave the place a pass.
These are the children and sometimes grandchildren of the folks who pioneered this sort of campus behaviour in the mid-to-late 1960s.
Danielle should go the Dean of students, and demand her tuition back; all of it, and find another college.
The only thing that I noticed was they all had common genetic mutation gene!
Just a bunch of ugly trolls.
I remember all the campus commies back in the 70s. A lot of hostility must come from being unattractive.
“Danielle should go the Dean of students, and demand her tuition back; all of it, and find another college.”
Agree, gordinkneehill. I would only add to the last part”in a Republican State” I hear the Texan major instutions haven’t been sucked in by this kind of crap, yet.
In the 1970s, scar, even the moderates and conservatives were unattractive.
Oh. Forgot to ask…..where is Kneehill?
So Miss Barrette is apparently the “Nascent Neoliberal,” the house “libertarian” at the Swarthmore Phoenix. In her latest column she more or less admits that university is a waste of time and money for all but the idle rich:
http://www.swarthmorephoenix.com/get-the-government-out-of-the-liberal-arts/
If we speak of education in this manner, we recognize the liberal arts as a gift. Through generous private philanthropy, the savings of our parents, or our own commitment to paying off future debt, some of us are receiving that gift at Swarthmore. But Swarthmore isn’t for everybody, and I don’t think it’s elitist to say so. In fact, I think it’s more elitist for Washington plutocrats to assume that sending everyone to college is the only way to build a prosperous society. It’s much preferable to recognize and encourage the dignity of honest work in any number of trades.
And for unconventional students who are still academically curious, online course platforms like Coursera and Udacity now offer Greek mythology or Calculus to anyone with an Internet connection. Cheap ebook readers will download the writings of Adam Smith in a matter of seconds. No, importing the Enlightenment over the Internet doesn’t quite have the same luster as a twelve-person seminar, but it’s also more flexible, not to mention more affordable by several zeros.
Yes it is. So, my pet, why are you still at Swarthmore, if it’s so expensive and it’s terrorized by socialist thugs? Surely the money dear old Mom and Dad are throwing at Swarthmore would make a lovely dowry for a woman looking for a man who can do something useful that will always need doing, like repair heavy machinery or drill for oil, and is in need of a wife and the down-payment on a house.
Answer: Dear old Mom and Dad are hoping beyond hope that in that twelve-person seminar will be the son of a bankster or a “Washington plutocrat,” and that you’ll somehow bewitch him into making you his trophy wife. When he trades you in for a younger and prettier model in (at most) ten years, you’ll be rewarded with a alimony cheque fat enough to pay for 35 years worth of diapers for dear old Mom and Dad.
You see, pet, they’ve figured out that they have about as much chance of getting back anywhere near what they paid into their pension plans or Social Security as Hillary Rodham has of getting into heaven. Being, no doubt, themselves modestly well-off idlers with make-work jobs in bureaucracy or academia who wouldn’t be caught dead cleaning their own toilets or mowing their own lawn (that’s what Mexicans are for—which, no doubt, is why you also support uncontrolled immigration), they’d sooner pimp you out to the sons of banksters and politicians than see you bring home a tradesman who works for a living, believes in God, and long ago figured out, along with everyone else with any common sense, that the only thing in the MSM that isn’t a pack of lies is last night’s sports results, and he can get those on-line these days.
Or at least I hope for your sake that’s their plan. More likely they believe this rubbish themselves and they haven’t given a second thought to the fact they’re throwing your inheritance away indulging your silly schoolgirl daydreams, and when your paper goes kaput in ten years you’ll be back in your old room eating them out of house and home for the rest of their days, because by then no man will marry you if he has a choice.
Do yourself a favour. Drop out, marry a good man and have the children who will be, I assure you, your only hope of a comfortable old age. Come back to us when you know something about what grown-ups who have to work for a living and have to mow their own lawns (if they have lawns) have to put up with, and you just might have something worth writing about. I look forward to seeing the link to that blog at SDA.
I guess the old communist thugs forgot that a second generation of even worst communist thugs always takes over. That’s how Marxist “history theory” is structured. The useful idiots are knocked off by the ruthless.
“grabbed the microphone out of turn and handed it to a line of protestors who delivered speeches that condemned the “liberal script” in the name of “radical, emancipatory change” and “institutional transformation.”
I hear the rhetoric of indefensible anarchism – to be radical and subvert existing structure simply because they exist. The natural extension of this ideal is the destruction of all organizational structure or “order”, much of which was responsible for holding together civilization and the upward progression of the human condition.
I see kids who have been “radicalized” (made antisocial, uncivil and belligerent) to no true or better purpose. Simply socially destructive zombies set in motion by misinterpreted idealism. No doubt their only value to the work force will be as CUPE rent-a-rioters.
Turn off the amp.
Get the mic back.
Expel the little twits. Oh, sorry, NO REFUNDS!
NEXT!
Ah, but Occam, after all hegomenic structure hs been removed, the thugs and gangs take over and will not give a rat’s arse about these people.
When I see stuff like this I am reminded of the scene from the film “The Mortal Storm” when the Nazi faction of the student body begins shouting down anyone who disagrees with them, which culminates in book burning, savage violence and … Well, you know the rest. But these “smart” kids sure don’t.
Liberal Arts Colleges are little more than Day Care Centres for watermelons and fascists at their worst and time and money wasters at their best. Before the Internet, they could all be replaced with library cards but now could likely function without. Of their professoriate, all but a few good lecturers deserve unemployment rather than tenure.
mojo
I figure, punch the arsehole who took the mic so hard he hits the floor, end of problemo!!!
You got your Hand Hills to the south and east, and the Foothills to the west. It’s a county in southern Alberta.
Matt, you are bang on. This is exactly how the Bolshevik thugs took over village, city councils and provincial governments in 1917, and in October, the Provisional Government of Russia.
The methods never change. These little Bolos have learned well.
Thanks Gord.I’m from Edmonchuck,so the only hills I really know are Two Hills and Three Hills, except for the odd trip into Jasper/Banff. Just thought of something.I could have just google mapped it. Darn old age memory loss.
Leftists resort to these thuggish mob tactics because they work . . . and have been working for the them–and not just for their student wing–since the New Left riots and mob-action takeovers of institutional space in the 1960s. To a large extent, the sea-change in the guiding cultural paradigms–the mainstreaming of homosexual sodomy is a case in point–of Western societies has been due to the persistent application of these tactics. This really is a corollary of Kate McMillan’s famous dictum, “Not showing up to riot is a failed conservative policy.”
There is still time to air-lift these people to North Korea where their “revolutionary flipping of the power dynamic” would be met with a handful of gravel in the mouth and a bullet through the skull.
The way the dude at the podium was shaking gave me a vision of how the current POTUS must have looked and acted 30 or so years ago. How many of those twerps understand the profound positive impact the petrochemical industry has had one the enviroment. Wonder where most of the trees went? Up the chimneys of the settlars fireplaces and the railroad. Glad there are still whales? Kerosene replace whale oil lamps before all the whales were gone? How many of them would be glad to ride a bicycle everywhere, including through non asphalt lined streets full of horse urine, dust and worse. I would have liked to see podium preacher squirming b/c his wool underwear was itching him rather than the synthetic blend he probably had on. Unless he was still in diapers.
“Afterwards, my classmates defended their behavior because they were smashing “hegemonic power structures” and “flipping the power dynamic.””
I think they’re just flipping smashed. But in a permanent sense; they won’t be sober in the morning–ever.
