1. So you’re in a SEVEN hour firefight at night…
   You wouldn’t need to laser designate the target, if you only need to communicate to the other few land elements that came in from Tripoli.
   Why wouldn’t you use phosphor TRACER rounds to indicate to others on the ground where the mortar crew target is? Simple, efficient, and tells others where to aim their rifles.
   For SEAL team trained individuals on the rooftop this would be elementary stuff…

   You laser designate the target when you have assets that can exploit the technology.
   If you are going to ‘call in the shot’; there are some assets loitering about to make good on the shot…otherwise why give your position away?

5. All this goes under the heading of “a passing advantage”. Such events generally last only months sometimes hours.
   The first use of iron swords against bronze was such…an advantage that prevailed until the other guy got an iron sword.

   Arab adoption of Soviet aircraft and Soviet jammer pods was easily countered by IDF deployment of “home on jam” missiles with very effective, long range “lock on”.
   These night vision, IR vision and designators have been proliferated so much, that a new game of cat and mouse has emerged.
   It’s always been more a battle of wits than technology.

6. I suspect what you will see in future is lasers operating in burst mode, come on briefly, fire a coded string of pulses, and go dark. And by briefly, I mean fractional seconds. And the pulse code is relayed in real time by radio to the airborne asset, “fire on 111001100”. Enemy watching with night vision gear will maybe see a brief flash, that doesn’t persist long enough for them to train their weapons.

    Is that not clouding the issue a bit. There was no one else around helping him.
    He may have been told that there was ,but apparently there was not.
    Perhaps Obama knew that they were not going to last the night,so he had them reveal their position so he could get a decent sleep before the Vegas fundraiser.

    And perhaps it was a desperation move to bluff the mortar crew into abandoning their position. Nobody will know what happened unless the people who were there come forward. The 20+ people who were escaped owe it to those guys who saved them.
