Conrad weighs in on the conversation we have been having today in his usual reasonable way, I think, with a diagnosis quite similar to some of those offered earlier, although he is clearly less optimistic about this election being the charm than I am.
Overall, I don’t feel any rancour towards Quebec: things gotta change there as much as they do in Ontario. Best we all be getting on with it, I’d say.
DS TY, I read the article this weekend. The debate is no longer how we do we keep Quebec in confederation, it’s become when will Quebecers stop electing separatists when they don’t want to separate?
david, shamrock, I’ll add yet another variable to the one of not electing separatistes when they don’t want to separate.
I’ll add the economic reality. When will they acknowledge an economic mode that is 70% dependent on federal input – and I don’t mean the 13.6 billion extra coming from the federal government – but the FACT that the Quebec economy is dependent on the federal taxpayer.
It is heavily made up of not only the francophone bureaucracy in Ottawa but of federal bureaucracies located in Quebec, on bank and other head offices located in Montreal, on federally subsidized manufacturing, on a plethora of universities far beyond the population ratio funded by the federal government, on special economic quotas for their dairy and other farm produce. All that’s left is the black market, a vibrant and major part of the Quebec economy.
Will Quebec ever acknowledge this economic cocoon and develop an internal self-organized and self-sufficient Quebec economy? Will it reduce the power of the unions which have destroyed any capacity for new small businesses? Will it reduce its taxes which result in that enormous black market economy and that endless corruption?
The cocoon, ie, the endless nurturing support of the Canadian taxpayer, has enabled Quebec to never, ever, confront its economic realities.
Will it? We’ve seen one very bad example from time to time on this blog. Quebecois, himself, is a perfect example of the insular, ignorant and unprincipled result of this isolation and dependency. He’s quite amenable to taking any and all funds from the ROC, and informing us, with a sneer, of his contempt for us.
So, I wonder.
An ex-president who owns a $35-million house would have to be in the so-called 1%, surely?
