  1. The only thing really hazardous to the health of Californians is the government of California.

  2. Considering everything from mandatory fuel efficiency to DDT, I want a warning posted outside Congress:
WARNING: The Capitol Building contains politicians that enact regulations known to cause suffering, disease, and death.

  3. Friggaly buggins. Those signs are everywhere in California. When I was in San Jose on business, the signs were found at the entrances to my hotel, on every building in the Silicon Valley giant-company’s campus, and at the mall.
I recently received an R/C airplane kit shipped from a company in California — a sticker with the same warning had been applied to the box before shipment. Granted, the lithium polymer battery in the airplane kit is kinda scary, but still.
I think the signs are required at premises with a certain visitor capacity. I don’t recall seeing the signs at smaller venues, such as individual stores and restaurants.
In the case of the hotel, I believe it was the cleaning chemicals that they were trying to warn you about. At the computer company I was visiting, it was the laser printer toner that was going to kill you.

  4. Those signs have lost their message power as they are on just about everything you buy. Nanny state on crack, but where is the sign warning that the sign itself has chemical properties either in the paint or material used known to cause cancer and such?

  5. We were just at Disneyland. I never saw that sign, and must have walked very close by 4X. If I had read that I would have turned the kids around. 😉

  6. Every single restaurant in California has the same sign telling you that they are feeding you poison. Stupid little people.

  7. I don’t think we have to wait for an earth quake to put California out of it’s misery Kate. The state has been mismanaged so grossly, for so long, by a ruling class clique of detached neurotics, that it will implode on its own stupidity first.

  8. That sign is not just in California.
I bought a bag of galvanized washers a month ago. Same warning, almost word for word. At first I thought “wtf, are they going to kill me?”
Then I read “California” and was relieved.

This reminds me of the illuminated signs over highways around Toronto with their bland safety messages. I’ve tuned them out to the point where I likely wouldn’t notice an important notice.

  10. I love California,beautiful country,lovely climate.
Only problem is the people who live there.

  11. When I lived in California I received a notification from the local utility company, PG&E, explaining the it was required to warn customers of any toxic elements to which the company might expose us. The letter went on to say that the State of California had declared that the natural gas which PG&E supplied to my house was a toxic element. I could almost see the writer’s eyes roll as I read that line. This occurred almost two decades ago.

  12. Oregon, Nevada and Arizona have a moral duty to post signs warning travellers they are about to enter the state of California.

  13. “Bad credit? We don’t care!
    No credit? We don’t care!
    Don’t plan to pay us?
    THAT’S when we care.”

  14. It’ll suffer from the same “cry wolf” syndrome well described in industrial saftey circles. As the emperor Napoleon declared, “He who defends everything defends nothing.”

  15. warning travellers they are about to enter the state of California
Oh dear, I’ve just booked a trip for next month and no one – not the travel agent, the airline nor the hotel – warned me about CA being so dangerous. Who do I sue?

  16. “Oregon, Nevada and Arizona have a moral duty to post signs warning travellers they are about to enter the state of California. ”
Oregon is hard on California’s back bumper. Nor is Washington far behind. It’s either the air or the Humboldt current.

  17. I fly to CA on business frequently. From what I have been told, Prop 65 did little more than generate a lot of dollars for attorneys. Just search on “Prop 65 lawsuit” and you will see for yourself.
“The 2010 private settlements once again show an interesting trend. There were 187 settlements in 2010 totaling roughly $13.6 million dollars. Of that money, approximately $7.8 million went to attorneys’ fees. This is roughly 57% going to the lawyers. ”

  18. Actually my personal favourite here in moron-tario is on EVERY bag of peanuts….
    “WARNING: may contain nut products…”

  19. EdC “Oregon is hard on California’s back bumper.”
Oregon is pretty much bat $hit crazy too although they’ve got a way to go to catch California.

  20. From strong independence to total insanity in 50 short years. This disease has now spread to New York and is creeping into Ontario and BC. The only common denominator is Lawyers and Politicians. Hmmmm…., After careful consideration I believe our only chance of eradicating this scourge is another world war, so we can start over again. All other ideas welcome for ponderance.

I hope you mean a world war in which we make the lawyers and politicians do the fighting for a change.

  22. “O, Sweet Saint Of San Andreas. Hear My Prayer”
Definitely has become my new favorite Kate-headline 🙂
As to the warning sign: OK, so Disneyland contains chemicals that cause cancer, etc. What does the State want us to do. Pointless to post the sign but not post the required action to take. Should I not enter? Should I where a gas mask? Should I wear chemically-resistant gloves? Should I hold my breath?
When that warning is posted on a pack of cigarettes, I assume that if I smoke, I have a good chance to get cancer. Should I assume also that if I go to Disneyland, I will get cancer.
Ya gotta love these liberal do-gooders.

  23. Back when I lived in Silicon Valley (this particular incident occurred in the mid-1990s), I got that notice with a shower-head that I had just bought. Evidently, somebody was warning me about chemicals in the water.

  24. Prop 65 warnings are necessary for products made in Canada that are to be sold in the US.
The world cannot afford California and the best remedy is to refuse to do any business with any entity in that state.

  25. Who notices signs anymore? Especially road ones. We have all been exposed so much to this hog wash we have become mind blind to them. Just more ads. Sad because when signs are really needed they go ignored now because of the nanny ninnies.

  26. The sign needs to be more specific. It’s actually talking about the HOT DOGS they sell at Disney. Those things are toxic, will get you up puking out your guts at 3am and make you miss a whole other vacation day because you can’t get outta bed!
