My favourite is still the billboard sign I saw on coming out of the Delta Chelsea one early morning in November of 1993. It had a picture of Bob Rae, very much like the one on this post, and underneath the caption read: “Socialism: how do you like it so far, Ontario?”
(Jedi hand-wave) These are not the failures you’re looking for.
On the bright side he did bring in photo radar which everyone loved…oh wait!
Bob Rae Failed to Convince Anyone ‘small hands = small ****’ is a Myth.
If I read that article correctly, the author seems to be saying, “Well Bob Rae may have been bad, but Dalton McGuinty is ten times worse. So there!”
Tough to argue with these guys.
Valencia, don’t lie and say Armstrong lives in BC. There’s a Toronto phone number on his CV.
Don’t forget Jobs Ontario. This agency was set up to supposedly get young people back to work and get them some valuable job experience. They ended up doing menial labour cleaning up parks and such. But you could only get a job working for Jobs Ontario if you were a visible minority and english was your fourth language.
Didn’t Algoma Steel tank a few years later anyway?
Armstrong: “Nor was he credited [by labour] with reforms to the Labor Relations Act, substantially enhancing union organizing rights, soon to be reversed by the successor Harris government.”
These “reforms” tilted the labour laws much further toward labour and against business. Good riddance. Ditto for “employment equity”, which Harris also sensibly repealed.
Armstrong: “Other noteworthy achievements included the Jobs Ontario program; incentives to employers to hire people on welfare; the expanded child-care program; the new Trillium Drug Plan giving affordable access to those in need of therapeutic drugs; renewed emphasis on aboriginal affairs; and a deep commitment to the success of our federal system, leading to an affirmative vote in Ontario on the national referendum on the Charlottetown accord.”
JobsOntario was an “achievement” in much the same way the Ford Edsel was an achievement. The problem of the “welfare trap” won’t be solved by incentives to employers. Child care remains controversial.
And the Charlottetown Accord was potentially the biggest pile of crap ever to be inflicted on our beleaguered country. It would have destroyed Canada by multiplying a hundredfold the depredations of special interests.
My dad (since retired) was a teacher during the Rae years, you know, during the “work for five days and get paid for four” years? Needless to say, he has no kind words for Bob Rae.
At least he didn’t lose his job.
I will always remember the phoney hue and cry during the last weeks of the David Peterson Liberal government. This was 1990. Not a Liberal myself, I now regret my automatic opposition at the time. The Peterson goverment had done very well indeed, to slow the craze of deficit spending elsewhere. The statement was made that the budget had balanced nicely. Someone got a leak that on further perusal it was actually about 3.8 billion.
Of course the press jumped on this, as only they can. The NDP threw their usual hissy fits. Bye bye Liberals, hello NDP. The 20 billion deficit during the first year of Bob Rae is now history. I read the good Province of Ontario is about 263 billion dollars in debt at this time.
Beyond my comprehension however.
